Re: Project 10sec lq4 91rs

Cool build, you lost me when you put a carb on it. Why run DIS, cam/crank system, then put a carb on it?
Ford/Chevy, I understand, to each his own.

Why play with power valves and jets, when you can just "key stroke" your jetting, timing, fuel trim,RPM,WOT,MAP,ETC

Not hating, love the build

Re: Project 10sec lq4 91rs

Went to the track last night with new drag bar and lowered instant center
The good.
60' improved .040 best was 1.500

The bad
lost almost. 4 tenths in 330'On through 1/4
And 2-3 mph

The worse
Rear end makes very loud noise at decell. Rear diff feels crunchy while turning wheels by hand

Da was 300'to higher than last time I ran 10.97@ 124 yesterday I ran 11.39@121

Sounds like its time for a spool. I'd guess the rearend was holding you back this time as well as the DA.

i wouldn't do a gear change till you got it running really close to right. then once it's dialed in, gear accordingly

Dude that really blows about the cap. I have a 4.30 gear in my 9" with a detroit locker. Go for the 4.30 if you have a taller tire.

Don't quote me on this but I don't think you can just get a new bearing cap, I think there machined to whatever center section there in. Might be better to get a junkyard one.

Any chance the wear pattern is from the cap failure?

Oh, and a Strange housing should be in your future.

around here we have a local guy that for $100-150 will regear a 9" for us. Since it's cheaper than the gear itself I just pay it out lol

If you can't do the measurements and such yourself, I would have someone do it for you. Otherwise buy the proper equipment to do it correctly.

Re: Project 10sec lq4 91rs

wDid some investigation on why the bearing cap broke. some dumbass (91_b4c_rs) used new bolts for the carrier bearing adjuster hold downs. well the bolts were just slightly too long. long enough to dig into the adjusters. good thing was it really REALLY locked down the adjusters to the extreme so they couldnt move lol. bad thing is i pretty much created a jacking bolt putting pressure on the bearing cap. Live and learn.

Anyway.
got the rear back together just have to button up a lil odds and ends. be back on the road/track

new parts
Speedway motors chromolly 31 spline lightweight spool weighs in at 6.0lbs

Another factory 3rd member

new bearings

reused 4.11 gears

One thing i will always give props for on a 9 inch, the infinite use of the housing no matter what happens to a center section. That is a mean looking spool.

this isn't always true....sometimes you can see daylight through the back cover after a catastrophic event. it's rare, but i've seen examples lol

glad you're back on track for not much money tossed out there. I cringe if I were to hurt my thru-bolted moser center....doubt I could afford a new setup for this season.

ya ya ya I may have 2 days off from my new business next week, so there will be solid progress. Of course this week I was supposed to have 3 free days, and I ended up doing 9 days of work in 7, so we'll see how that goes.

Re: Project 10sec lq4 91rs

engine expired today.

took it for a spin after work drove for about 20 min, decided to lay into it from a 20 roll. stabbed the throttle shifted into 2nd at 6800 rpm, then car turned off and sounded like it dieseled a lil. pulled over tried to restart it. all it did was click click. engine wouldnt turn over. no holes in the block no oil on the ground oil looked good.

got a tow home an stared to tear it down. found timing chain wedged under crank gear and pan locking the engine up.

pulled heads they look good besides, found 9 bent valves, pistons were hit, #6 was hit so hard that it was sitting **** eyed in the cylinder. pulled the rest of engine down found...

-rod journal on crank thrashed all bearing look good and even the broken rod shows noheat damage
-2 ****ed up pistons
- 1 pulverised rod in 4 pieces (#6)
- 1 messed up rod from collateral damage.
- big hole in windage tray with a bunch of parts in the pan.
- cosmetic damage on inside of block from parts bouncing.
- 2 cylinders are scored and have bottom of cylinder chucked a lil ( almost looks like a block that has had the cylinders clearamced for a stroker lol)
- cam has 2 lobes that r a lil jacked up. gonna have to trash it. lifters still look great!!!
- jp single roller timing set still looks brand new. found all the pieces from the timing chain i can almost put it back together (see pic)
- bent pushrods
-2 bent rocker arm bolts

Sorry to hear you lost your engine. Going to build another similar engine or just install a junk yard 6.0 to hold you over?

Probably try to put it back the way it was. Or do a stroker.

Re: Project 10sec lq4 91rs

instead of having the cylinders repaired on my block, and be afraid it would blow out, i decided to buy another donar engine

2006 silverado lq4 complete engine. runs but low oil pressure. bad cam bearing.
$500.00
some one is picking up the 317 heads for $150.00 saturday

GOOD NEWS. was able to save the cam from old engine. the lobe damange was a molten piece of metal that bonded to the surface. chiselled it off and hitthe lope with 400 grit, then 1500 gritt . smooth!!!

Re: Project 10sec lq4 91rs

Mini update.

6.0 block is back from machine shop. Got new cam bearings, bored. 030 over, hot tanked, and a coat of black paint.

- Got my scat 6.100" forged h beam rods with arp rod bolts, 2 racetec pistons, and a ring set, comp double roller chain, 3 pushrods, and. Ordered a set of lightweight ls3 valves this time.

- cleaned crank up and set it in using oem replacement speedpro bearings, ended up with less than . 001" main bearing clearance with plasticguage. TOO TIGHT!!. took bearings bavk to advance auto and ordered a set of 152m1x coated 3/4 groove bearing. +.001" oversized.

Went ahead and opened piston ring gaps up to. 020" top and. 021" 2nd ring. From. 018"/.018" due to an aquired zex parimeter plate.
