Re: Camaro road race car.
Perhaps squeezed between a pair of mid 70s Greenwood Corvettes.
Our rig is right after Vic Edelbrock's trailer/cars.
I race Friday afternoon and Sunday morning and afternoon.
If you want a cheap dinner and good beer join us Friday 6/7pm at Round Table pizza for dinner.
Followed by a short walk downtown to the watch the auctions from the street.
Round Table 375 Alvarado Street, Monterey (831) 373-1351
Disclaimer my Camaro will be there.
But I'll be there for only as long as the Camaro is race ready.

Re: Camaro road race car.
Thank you for all the great photos.
Zed/28 aka Wayne snapped these of the Camaro at the Monterey Motorsports Reuion.
Dialed in the Camaro a little more.
Got the shifter working much better.
Went full firm front and full soft rear on the adjustable sway bars.
When I add 50 lbs more front spring the sway bars should go back in adjustment.
Camaro ran every minute of every session except the last one on the 6th day.
After Sunday morning warm up found it broke the mounting ears off an old rear Alcon 4 piston caliper.
Thanks for all the great photos Wayne!!!
The Sunday morning race from outside Turn 2.
Sunday morning same race my in car.
First half just shows the cars on grid.
More photos of all the cars at the event.
The Camaro is in group 6b.

Re: Camaro road race car.
Over the 6 days it used up 1 set, ran them Friday afternoon and they still had some tread depth but the grip was gone. So Sunday morning I was scuffing in new slicks for the Sunday afternoon race. Tire management wise next time I will scuff tires on Friday so they can properly cool for 24+ hours. (Since I did not go out Sunday afternoon they did get time to cool afterall) The Sunday morning race is important, that session sets the starting order for the afternoon race.
According to the Goodyear rep I spoke to at the track, if you scuff sticker slicks for a few laps then let them cool they tend not to peak and instead provide better grip for the life of the slick, The really great news is the GY rep said they are going to continue to make the slicks in the sizes the cars in our run group use.
I will look for you at Coronado, prolly be there Sunday only.
We have company in town that weekend so my Coronado race plans were canceled. Planning to be in the Coronado car corral Sunday in my 70.5 Bumble Bee Z28.

There are some really awesome cars here but I haven't seen anything like Passmenow has, I think he's got my vote.

Re: Camaro road race car.
Afaik all the cotm race cars started out as stock street legal Camaros.
This is a tube chassis race car with only 2 production Camaro parts on it.
The metal roof section (required by rules) and stock rear tail lights.
Regardless I gave my vote to big mods, his Camaro does it all.

Here are some snaps that Zed/28 aka Wayne took at the local dragstrip last summer.
It was the first time out/shakedown for the race car after a 10 month restoration.
I'll spare us the photo discriptions, but if anyone has a question lmk.
Thanks for the great photos Wayne!!!
I have moved the car to a race team in San Diego that is very competitive in SCCA racing. Davis Stone racing will now service the car at the track and between races. I expect the Camaro and driver will be safer, faster and have more fun in 2014.

Hey Wayne next race should be at Chuckwalla around Thanksgiving.
http://www.hsrwestrace.com/HSR_West/...-form-Nov2.pdf
Fwiw I was at Chuckwalla in the Roadster last weekend.
Last photo is the Camaro last year as I recieved it, before it was restored back to 1989 Long Beach Trans Am race.
The car was in great shape for the race but never made it past the first corner...see page 159 in this Hot Rod Magaxine book.

Thank you again Wayne, they are very very nice photos.

Road racing takes it to a much higher level.. A level I could sadly not afford at this point.
but maybe at some time in life. Road America is only a couple of hours away and Joliet Autobahn club about 1 hour.

Re: Camaro road race car.
Uncovering the history of the people involved with the Camaro during the 88/89 Trans Am seasons has been a fun part of this restoration.
I've had discussions with owner/driver Jerry Kuhn, he was a restaurant owner in New Jersey. He owned a place called Ringos.
I've been lucky to hear from a few of his team members too.
Glenn Brown the team photographer was Jerry's race buddy for most of Jerry's racing life. Here is a photo Glenn sent me recently of the team at the 1988 New Jersey Meadowlands Trans Am race.
Looking forward to getting the Camaro out for the Palm Springs Revival race at Chuckwalla raceway next weekend.

Awesome videos at the Monterey Historics!
Looks like you were almost in the same class as Adam Carolla. He loves talking about the historics on his Carcast show so I heard a lot about the 2013 race. Pretty cool that you were there too. I was hoping to go through his videos and see your car in them. Would have been pretty neat.

Some photos and videos of last weekend at laguna Seca.
Weather was perfect; car ran perfect.
The car ran great and we were on my oldest set of slicks.
The Camaro seems safe, fast and nearly perfect.
Enjoy a few photos from Wayne and my in car videos from our weekend at Laguna Seca.
Saturday morning practice the slow spin at turn 11.
Saturday afternooon race.

Re: Camaro road race car.
Wayne a devote 3rd gen fanatic was not impressed with our recent addition a 4th gen Camaro race car.
Wayne said the front grill looked like a fish mouth.
This was Andy Porterfield's last Camaro, Pancho Weaver chassis and 100hp more than the 3rd gen Camaro.
Anyone have a link to a good 4th gen board?

Congratulation on the acquisition of that car and a very fine job of preserving it. Happy motoring. I have pictures somewhere on me sitting in Tribbles pit with him but I can not find them (too many years ago)

Thanks for the kind words Dean hope to see you at the Vintage races.
I'm not a mechanic or a race engineer so I have to depend on the expertise of others in those areas.
Here is the Camaro that Ron is selling to make room for Protofab 01.
"Built by Dave Watson in 1984, Dave went onto Roush as engineer in 1985, Good car! It ran in 21 SCCA pro Trans am races it is original and has the log books. Full mechanically fresh ready to go.
The car is priced at $75,000.00. Driver was Dave Watson. This was his personal car he built this one and a lot more. He went to work for Roush in 1985 as an engineer and stopped driving. In 1988 Dave was SCCA Trans am race director tech guy etc. He made the rules. It is a cool car that has good history. I need to sell it. I am the process of buying another car".

Re: Camaro road race car.
I read a little further into this thread this morning (only got to the part where Zed mentioned a "dentist" and I responded to that.
That Ron guy never seems to have any crew. There was always another guy running the Vette at times, but I never saw anyone collecting data after he came off the track. That's why I say he was just out there turning laps and doing things the hard way.
Now reading further, I see where you talk about your new crew. I am very surprised the chassis guy put a big bar setup on the front of that car for Mazda Speedway. A big bar setup it a high speed circle track thing do drop the nose for aerodynamics. Using that coming off a high speed into a low speed tight corner will make the car so tail happy every time. You are going to fight keeping good heat on the lefts with all the rear roll needed to keep the inside rear planted- you will also get alot more movement int he wheel (drivers controls)- hence why at least he upped the caster for you.
I know on Rons car the upper fornt control arms touch the firewall. This causes a lack of caster gain through travel. Did you relocate yours? Why I ask is you say something about changing configuration to get more static caster. Its really dynamic caster you need with all that nose dive of a soft spring/big bar setup. That and antidive maxed setting- but again thats hard with those long rear upper control arms.
It doesn't look like you were at the last Speedweek either. I should be at the one coming up later this year- I'll look for you. Here's the current ride I am crew chief for in NASCAR Supertruck division in So Cal. (equivilant to the old Craftsman truck name)
Dean
ps- we just had a bad season opener. Found out somehow the motor guy put an alcohol carb onto the car and really screwed us on power. Truck just got out of the dyno shop with another reputable builder finding several problems. Hopefully we will be up to speed- doing some testing tonight as a matter of fact.

Re: Camaro road race car.
As I signed in to post, I just went up and saw your pictures afterwards (I can not access them until I sign in) I see you run more of a conventional double arm then on Ron's car. You would still probably need to raise the front upper monut if you are getting alot of suspension travel in the hard slow corner braking zones coming off high speed with that softer spring setup. It will scause your front rc to go into the dirt as the rear lifts- especially at slow speed without aero to hold the rear down.

Thanks guys, was a fun year in the 3rd gen.
It ran great and was easy to drive fast and safe all year.
Next year we'll just have to put gas in it and wax it.
Couple snaps and videos.

My plate was soooo full- Sorry I missed that event this year. First time I've missed it in 5 years. I was really looking forward to meeting you and admiring that gorgeous car of yours. I just had too much emergency stuff dump on me all at once I still have not had a day off to play since that event.
