Re: Winter 2013/2014 drag race suspension overhaul!
well i noticed my 1/8 mile mph swung nearly 2 mph between 6 passes and so i started looking. it picked up the mph on the passes it spun, lol. i have 1 pass where it went near 102 mph in the 1/8
i don't know much, but i'll help with what i can!

Well, mine needs more work before I take it to the track. I'm going to try and get it together enough to go to the track before I leave Missouri, but I'm not going to put slicks on it until I get a new rearend.

gonna try to get the oiling under control before it bites me:
big thanks to PA Racing for stepping up again and giving me a killer deal on this pan. wanted to get this on before the race this weekend, but i'll be living dangerously on the fbody oil pan one more weekend.

Re: Winter 2013/2014 drag race suspension overhaul!
put the small 750 back on, changed nothing else, and today i ran:
10.59
10.50
10.49
10.52 (lifted)
10.55 (lifted)
10.48
no idea why, but it seems to like this smaller carb better. DA was worse today, hovered around 1500'. Ran with the Pro Stick (east coast stick shift bracket org) and had a blast. i'll never go back to an auto. i made it to the 3rd round today where i went way red as the car tried to roll the beams on me. Also, the headlight covers are worth NOTHING. i ran the same mph (actually a little better today at 131.8 was my best) without the covers. i messed them up this week so i opted to take them off...was basically wasted effort, lol.

Way to go buddy!!! Looking good.
I figured out my struts are done on the front of my car. Finally taking off the old 90/10 lake woods. They don't like wheelies after 200 passes.

Oh yeah...the dead on is $$$$. Lol.
I thought the struts should last many years ...but I had them on my old street car before for a couple of years...and now on this one.
Time for some fresh ones I guess.

Matt,
That thing is moving, makes me wish I'd kept my T56. I may consider getting another since I went turbo, but who knows! Looking good Bro.

Any mods (in a flow improvement sense) to either?
At what RPM do you feel you're making peak HP, (not neccesarily your max RPM)?
What am angling is that the formula most use to determine CFM based on engine size and max RPM is somewhat flawed. Even taking into account what your assumed volumetric effeciency might be, the formula leans towards a carb that a little on the large size. That results in mixture quality not being as good as it might be with a carb of a smaller size. Often the smaller carb will produce better results. This might be what you're seeing. It may also be the the style of booster that's in one carb compared to the other. A booster that gives a stronger signal will produce better mixture quality and the result is a charge that enters the cylinder that easier to ignite. That may not sound like much of way to build more horsepower but a lot of people put a lot of time into that part of the science for a reason.
Bigger is not always better.

Re: Winter 2013/2014 drag race suspension overhaul!
carb 1 ("old reliable") 750 cfm:
box stock holley metering blocks
box stock holley fuel bowls
box stock holley throttle blade plate
proform center section (the original 750 one released 12-14 years ago)
2 corner idle circuits
downleg boosters
front pv
i haven't had the bowls off in so long i don't recall jetting
carb 2 900ish cfm custom K&B carb that was not built for my engine:
billet blocks with custom metering
billet throttle blade plate
downleg booster
pv in front and rear
4 corner idle circuits.
because this was a custom jobber, i have opted to not post jetting/metering that i've found because it wasn't my carb.
i realize my testing was not very scientific, and without the information from the other carb, it's just not a great comparison. also the comparing runs were done on two seperate weekends, but the DA was within 400'. the better results was from the smaller carb and worse air, lol. i have asked my father to let me just keep this thing though, lol!

Re: Winter 2013/2014 drag race suspension overhaul!
Might be a perfect example of how the increased venturi size ( and I'll bet the 900 has a larger cross sectional area when compared to the 750) is affecting mixture quality. Not as fine an atomization and a mixture that enters the cylinder a little compromised. This isn't to say the 900 couldn't be brought around to match the 750s performance. Something along the lines of a stepped downleg may make the difference or even an annular dischage booster although I've found that tuning the annular booster takes a little more time because they repsond so well to any changes made. That said, from a drag racing perspective, that's not so much an issue. WOT and go.
Like you said though, tests on different days may not be telling the whole picture.

first night out on the street playing in the new area, brought it home on the trailer
seems the tick stage 2 didn't like a hard 2-3 on street tires, lol! i'm sure it was already hurt, cause it seems unlikely that it would have broken the way it did otherwise. i think i got the output shaft but i'll know more this weekend.
time for vipershaft and faceplate upgrade!

yeah, it wouldn't have anything to do with side stepping the clutch on the north side of 6k rpm at the track......

well, i can honestly say i've seen worse. we had a 4 speed saginaw behind an aluminum headed 383 in a 56 chevy. went through 4 of them in about 2 weeks, then put the th-400 back in!
did it get into the case or chew up any bearings?

Re: Winter 2013/2014 drag race suspension overhaul!
it spun hard on that pass. went 1.59 or something. i normally launch at 6000 rpm and do a quick slip, not a dump. i've been 1.41 a few times.
i can't see exactly what all it got. i think the case and bearings are OK, but not for sure.

It's always something! But that's the price we pay in this hobbie; boys and our toys. I'm pretty sure I'm going to break something in Valdosta, Ga. next weekend during the LSX vs. Everybody else event when the boost gets turned up to 15-18lbs.

Re: Winter 2013/2014 drag race suspension overhaul!
talked with Jonathan at Tick Performance a bit yesterday. T56 is shipping monday. it will recieve:
-new input shaft
-new cluster shaft
-faceplated 1-4 gear set
-REM polishing
-cyrogenic treatment of all pieces
-plumbed for squirters onto the input/cluster gear set
-viper mainshaft
we worked out a payment/layaway plan. here's to hoping i get it all back together over the next 6 weeks or so. trying to get it back together by yellow bullet, but definitely hope to be at the ProStick/UMTR stick shift nationals in mid september at MIR.

Glad to hear you're gonna get it fixed up! Could you explain what REM polishing is/does?
#135
Re: Winter 2013/2014 drag race suspension overhaul!
it's a polishing process to the tooth face of the gears. it removes any stress risers from the tooth to hopefully prevent premature wear or damage. it's a popular process with differential gears too (my next ring and pinion will be lightened and REM polished).

Re: Winter 2013/2014 drag race suspension overhaul!
just an update:
i've been speaking with steve at monster clutches. we've decided that a tilton flow control valve (basically a restrictor for the clutch hydraulics) will help with longevity and consistency, so i'm putting that on my list.
i spoke with the guys at tick performance about the damage. it got:
-input shaft
-cluster gear shaft
-5th gear
-6th gear
-reverse gear
Buddy also mentioned that the fluid was burnt. this was new Amsoil ATF and had less than 20 passes on it so i was surprised when he said that. Basically the fluid is going to the back of the case on hard launches and the front gears and bearings run dry for a couple seconds. compound that with the high rpm range that this engine wants to live in and it was only a matter of time, so i'm also going to be getting an external fluid pump to keep the pieces parts happy.
Additionally, the payments are going to tick, albeit slowly, and i'm hoping to have the trans back maybe sometime next month. i'm about halfway there right now, lol.

Re: Winter 2013/2014 drag race suspension overhaul!
i just looked at the schedule again to get a refresher. there are two pro-stick races in October. One is at Mason-Dixon Dragway in Hagerstown, MD. The other is at VMP in Richmond, VA. i don't know how realistic it is to make the one in VA, but the one in MD is about 45 mins from my house. Mason-Dixon does a drive-in drag event too, where you have to drive in and race. it's setup as a bracket race and i believe they have a quick 8 also. i'm going to try to get the car back together for these events.
just trying to be realistic at this point. i'm also trying to come to grips with the idea that i may NOT make it out before the end of the season. it will be hard to say.
a local guy is allowing me to borrow a factory stock t56 though. i will not race on it, but i have some ideas on some mods for the car that will make servicing the trans better/easier. i'm going to put the trans in the car, get the mods setup, get the hydraulics bled with the new restrictor, and do a little driving. this will be mutually beneficial as he has no way of testing to see if this t56 is any good.

Re: Winter 2013/2014 drag race suspension overhaul!
i hope to have more updates about this tonight or tomorrow. i'm going to cut the other side out tonight, a crosstube will go between the sfc's for a transmission crossmember, then i'll run tubes from the subframe stubs back to the crosstube, and lastly, i will french into the floor tubes diagonally from the crosstube rearward back to the sfc's nearish the front lca mount. i'll keep ya posted.

Re: Winter 2013/2014 drag race suspension overhaul!
i wish i could have another update tonight, but it's gym night, and having lost 50lbs so far, i'm not wanting to skip on my routine. i have another 25lbs to get to my goal weight, lol. so...i'll get back under the car tomorrow night and get back to work
