I'm running 275/40/17 now; when I switch to ESP next year I'll run a 315/35/17 square.

275/40/17. And they rub a little up front. How will you fit 315? What wheels?

Re: Autocrossers, what tire sizes do you run?

Ive got 17x11 rears....

I have this crazy idea to narrow them 1.5 inches, and get another pair of 17x11's and narrow them 1.5 inches, so I can have four 17x9.5 "dished" ZR1's that fit thirdgens.... Would look pretty awesome... but probably not worth the money investment.

But you'd be able to run commonly available scrubbed 275/40/17 race tires. I havent found any used 315/35/17's yet. But race 275/40/17's are out there. I saw you looking for 17x11's. Made me wish we could have made a straight so I could have a set of four 17x9.5s just so I can run used race tires.

Im still trying to address the rubbing that turn up while I'm running mine. It's all in the front of the rear wheel well... I just keep hammering it a little more every time I see more rub. I think I've got it now because I could only get the last little spot to show up after hooning around at the autocross last weekend.

I didnt have to mod anything for the rears, but for the fronts... I'm guessing you're going to have to do something a bit more invasive with the steering knuckle, yes? If you shorten them up, is there any good reason NOT to go with a rack and pinion setup?

Me and a buddy are making adjustable steering stops so I can address serious rubbing. As for used race tires, there's a guy in another region here who runs 315/35/17s... I'm trying to arrange a way to get his casts offs.

So you're just going to push the wheel farther to the outside of the car?

Re: Autocrossers, what tire sizes do you run?

You are probably going to have to cut the lower part of the front fender in front of and behind the wheel to fit 315s. My old '90 Formula had already been cut, and I had to do it on this car to get them to fit. It will drive fine in a straight line but will rub the bodywork when turning the wheel. It's not a lot that needs to be cut, though.

It seemed like a lot of the ESP cars had those tin snip mods this weekend; it looked like McCance just took an cutoff wheel to all the fender archs on his WRX.

Do you have close ups of your fender mods?

Re: Autocrossers, what tire sizes do you run?

search Pablo. He has 17x11's. Here is a link to his steering arms to help allow the 17x11's. http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/index.php?showtopic=16578

I run stock 16x8's with 245 fronts and 255 rears still cause i can't find wheels I like in my price range that i believe will hold up to the forces of autoX/RR.

I've had a dozen ideas.
18x8 IROCs with BFG Rivals for track and street
CTW's with slicks for the street and 18" IROCs or Vette wheels for the street
Boze, Forgeline, Intro, etc, for track and street cause after that much money i don't want to buy any more wheels and tires!!!
Newest Idea is the new 18" Weld RTS wheels.

Sorry if i got off track a lil but it happens.

Re: Autocrossers, what tire sizes do you run?

I personally love the idea of running a 315 in a 4 corners - problem right now is limited selection of 315-35-17 tires out there; much more choice in 315-30-18 and 275-40-17.

I want tonrun a 315/35/17 in the rear only. What modifications do you have to do to make them fit back there? Suggested backspacing on wheels thinking 17x10.5 with 6.25 backspacing. Thanks in advance.

Re: Autocrossers, what tire sizes do you run?

I just wish the tire selection was better. If I could trade my 17x11's for 17x9.5's I would.

There's no point in a 17x10.5. The popular wide 17" sizes are 275/40/17 (17x9-9.5) and 315/35/17 which requires an 11 inch wheel. A 17x10.5 would just use the same 315/35/17s and will rub just as badly and may have a more "bulged" look, which probably isnt good.

It's tough to tuck them and have them look nice. Mine look half decent, but Im still not really satisfied with it.

Bump stops can stay. Only mods needed are a BFH to the inner fender and an adjustable panhard bar.

Re: Autocrossers, what tire sizes do you run?

They look fine to me and most the tire company's say 10.5 min for a 315/35/17. I could do a 17x11 as long as tucking it isn't much of a big deal. And I want the tires for the look and the hook. Not sure a non drag radial in 275 will do it.

Wider tire in the rear is not a good set up for these cars. You want a square set up.

Why is it jot a good setup? I see lots of people do 245 fronts and 275 rears. And my car isn't a corner carver any way. So I'm not worried if it pushes a little bit.

You are correct. I should have been clearer. For autoX and road racing a square setup typically is best. For everything else, staggered is fine. Looks good too!

I assumed since this thread is titled "autocrossers....." you wanted advice on an autoX/RR tire setup.

People certainly do a stagger, although the car is going to understeer mechanically just due to the difference in tire sizes. I'd rather have a 265 all around than a 245/285 stagger any day of the week.

But in the case of maximum tire under each corner, going the 275/315 stagger is pretty much maximizing the contact patch - I would guess that while it may understeer a bit, it would be a lot less than a 245/275.

Keep in mind that the only contact between your car and the road is your tires, pick the wrong ones (type, size) and your car will not perform as well as it should - be it handling, braking, or acceleration.

I agree with both you guys... 275's under each corner... wider is okay in the rear, but not really helpful.

Re: Autocrossers, what tire sizes do you run?

Gonna be running in CP next year due to no interior, lack of OEM seatbelt a and a few other things. So the biggest wheel I can use is 16x10. What tire size should I be hunting for and rim size? I haven't been very lucky with my google-fu to figure this out. >.>

Wide 16's are hard to find but here is one. Might be a little wide for a 16x10
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....=yes&tab=Specs

Here are a few more in 275 width. Would work on a 9-10" wheel

That's the biggest you can run in CP? I'm no longer in that class but I thought our cars were heavy enough to be able to run bigger tires even when stripped.

Re: Autocrossers, what tire sizes do you run?

Rules are +50lb weight for up 12" wide, no weight adjustment for 10" wide. They got rid of the 16+ diameter weight adjustment last year, although it looks like the current rulebook is vague since they just cut out that portion of the book. Larger diameter tires are still legal though.

Last year in CP I ran 315/30R18's all around on 18x11.5's. 18's fit over the steering knuckle so you can run more backspacing up front.

Next year I'm running 335/30R18 A6 in front, 345/35R18 A6's in back on 18x12 CCW's.

I have a second set of wheel's I'm trying to move...

I have 225/55/16 on my Camaro. It's not my primary auto-x and race car so it's not properly set up yet.
