Winter Upgrades 2/2014 racing season

It has been awhile since I have posted anything about my car, so I figure I might as well update some of you guys. I posted recently about my dad purchasing a car, however I haven't updated mine and actually quite a bit has changed.

Anyway, to start I had decided over the winter I was going to upgrade my car some and I wanted the car to be faster, however I am a pretty serious Sunday bracket racer and for sportsman races on Sunday the car could not run faster than 11.50. My way around this was I actually installed a NOS Sniper kit. But before I could do that, i had to get the car legal to run faster than 11.50. So here are some picture's of what's been going on in the car.

First, I welded in my own 6-point roll cage from S&W, but i found when i took the stock seats out that the whole floor was rusted underneath the seat, so that job ended up with having to fabricate a new floor pan as well, and then to my own seat brackets for the new seats I purchased.

I have some in progress pictures, but they are not on my phone, so I will be posting mainly finished projects...

This is the cage at its start...

And here is the floor I welded in along with the new seat brackets I put together....

And now on to my Nitrous setup... Now for this I have a NOS Sniper Kit and I am only shooting a 100 shot. I bought a Mallory 685 ignition box, a 1 gal fuel cell, and then I am running a window switch set at 3000-6900 and I bought a NX bottle heater for it as well. I have a Fuel pressure safety switch wired in to shut the nitrous off if fuel pressure drops below 4.5 psi. I basically tried to make it a foolproof setup. However, I found ways to still be a fool, lol.

Anyway, I have also wired up a red and blue led inside of the car, with the Red led letting me know when the WOT switch is activated, and the Blue letting me know when the solenoids are activated.

So here is an engine picture of the setup...

And then here is all of my switches, I have a Nitrous Outlet ashtray panel for the nitrous only. The switches you see in the center console are for motor only passes. There is also another Fuel pressure switch for the nitrous that is to the left of the AFR gauge but the steering wheel is blocking it. The switches were tricky to figure out at first but now they are second nature...

Anyway, now to the results. I have taken the car to the track multiple times already so i have a lot of data. The first time out, the fastest the car ran was 11.19 @ 122 mph. I bought a go pro and figured out from the video that the nitrous was not hitting on the hit. I found out that the throttle wasn't going 100% WOT. So I fixed this(This is also why I ended up running the LED's inside for WOT and the Solenoids) and went back to the track again this past Wednesday.

The new best for the car is 11.07 @ 122.5 mph. However, this day was a lot hotter and a bad air day. The car was a lot more consistent this time as a ran an 11.08, 11.09, 11.07, 11.07, 11.10. This shocked me as the first time the car was extremely inconsistent. Anyway, the car was now hitting on the hit and I was averaging 1.47 60 foot times. Car felt awesome, lol.

Anyway, here is what the car looks like taking off now...

And then here is what the best slip looked like, mph was down here as the day got hotter and a storm came through with a strong head wind.. I am G394...

Anyway, long story short this car has come along way. I have had many up and down battles with it but i definitely enjoy going to the track now and running 11.80's and being a contender in the bracket series, and then going to the test and tune nights and surprising people with some 11.0x time slips. I still have to say, i am waiting for the 10.9x pass.

Anyway, here is a quick in car video I have of the car, this pass was 11.19 @ 122 mph. This was before i fixed the WOT issue i was having, and the car here was only 60 footing 1.55(which is average on motor).

Now I am just looking forward to an exciting racing season, where hopefully nothing breaks!

Where did you put your GoPro, on the roll bar?

Yeah I bought one of the Roll bar mounts and I mounted it in between the passenger and driver seat. I mainly do the in car video, to slow it down into slow-mo video and then I can watch my gauges and see the AFR's at what RPM's. The amount of data I've acquired from this is more than worth the price of the gopro!

I've been trying to figure out where to mount mine, but I don't have a roll bar. Looked like a pretty good pass.

Well done. Being in the 11's all motor (I'm not a nitrous kind of guy) is an impressive feat. I haven't read back on your build too far but have you taken the streetability out of it? From a purely legal standpoint that is. All the functions like wipers and horn and headlights. Or modifed the suspension to the point where driving on the highway is a little risky?
By the way, have you posted your cars race weight?

Re: Winter Upgrades 2/2014 racing season

Thanks a lot! I was not a big fan of nitrous either and am still not a big fan of the price, lol. Also, the car is still street legal, I still have power windows, power locks, power trunk release all working, also still have full interior even with the roll bar. I also even have the stock seatbelt still mounted in the car. The main problems with streetability with my car now is The cage(obviously), manual steering, and a spool. But I can still get around all that if I want a nice cruise on a sunny day.

When it comes to weight, the car weighed 3200 pounds with me in it 2 years ago before I did a lot of weight reduction, and then before I added all of it back in with a roll cage, lol. So I am guessing I am right around 3200 with driver, maybe a little more or a little less. The car runs really good N/A and I have come to realize this year that I like the car a lot more without the nitrous. I still have fun with the nitrous on test and tune nights, and I am positive the car has a 10 second pass in it. But the car is really easy to drive N/A and it's also really consistent, which helps me in the points series!

To answer your other question, I think the worst part about my car on the highway would be more of the rpm's it would be turning than the suspension. I have drag shocks/struts and springs as well, so the car will hit the bumps pretty hard but the car would get through those. I'll be honest and say the car is probably 95% track and 5% street, and as much as I say I would like it to be more street, the more things I buy to make it more of a track car, lol.

I see that now. 4.11's and a turbo 350. That certainly helps your car perform that way it does but doesn't leave much for highway cruising that's for sure.
I suffer at the track with the 700R4 and 3.73 gear. The launch is pretty good with a best of 1.7 60' on a street style suspension but the 1-2 shift isn't much for drag racing and there's not nearly enough gear at the top end. What it does do well is travel at cruise speeds. 70 mph gets me to just about 2500 with the lock-up converter and O.D. and the 20+ mpg certainly helps.
I guess we all make our own decisions on the formula for what we drive.
Keep up the good work. Looking forward to your 10 second pass (although the 11's are what I envy the most).
