Where are you guys putting them? I'd love to get some new ideas. been thinking in front of radiator dead center. Does anyone see anything wrong with that? pics are appreciated!

Re: Remote mount oil filters

Matt. what is wrong with the OEM location on the block?
Are you having issues with the header?

If it's a matter of convenience you still have to crawl under the car to drain the oil pan.
the filter is there.

I switched to a K&N oil filter, it has a hex head nut welded on.
This makes servicing much easier since you don't have to use a oil filter wrench and negotiate the space with the headers.

Not to sway you if you want a remote mount filter.

I just don't see the reason for it.. unless you went to a dry sump system?

Re: Remote mount oil filters

i'm having an oil control issue at 1.41 sixty foot. (remember, i'm ls, not sbc) the solution is a proper pan with baffles and extended pickup. the pans offered in my price range (and most all price ranges for that matter) require a remote mount filter. the filter adapter is part of the pan, not part of the block like a sbc/bbc.

Re: Remote mount oil filters

That makes sense now.

Sounds like you don't have much choice in the matter at this point if you want to use a "drag racing" oil pan.

LOL, at that rate might as well go dry sump.

Re: Remote mount oil filters

no. dry sump is way more pricey. i already have the canton oil filter mount. i can do the rest of this for under $400. the lack of oil control with the f-body ls pan is a well known issue. the only thing "drag racing" about this pan is the baffles are set up in the pan to help oil control under straight line acceleration. it also increases capacity to 7 qts. the ls1 gerorator type of oil pump is very efficient also...and has been known to suck a pan dry before oil can come back down to the sump. i'm not experiencing THAT problem, but with this new oil pan it shouldn't be an issue in the future.

so....anyone got any filter mount ideas?

Re: Remote mount oil filters

I've mounted mine in front of the rad just off centre towards the driver's side. This is in the big block TA but the idea is the same. I have to remove the cover (between the rad support and the nose) for access but that's not a big deal. The only issue I'm having is getting the filter adapter to seal 100%. Getting at it once the headers are installed isn't the easiest thing and I've had a persistant oil leak since day 1. (It doesn't matter much now as the car has been sitting for several years waiting for the interest to grow again).

This has always been the issue with remote mount oil filters on the SBC / BBC. They tend to leak.

I do not know if this is a similar problem with remote mount oil filters on the LS engines.

Matt, You may want to "seek the power of the bullet" on this one.

Re: Remote mount oil filters

since there isn't an adapter on this oil pan, i'm hoping that leaking will be little to nothing. it's got AN fittings welded directly to the pan.

That would do it. You can imagine the interface between the adaptor and the block and that's the problem spot. I've got AN fittings coming from the adaptor but that doesn't help in this case.
Besides in front of the rad I couldn't think a of reasonable spot for the remote filter. Mind you this is a fully equipped street car with all of the OEM accesories and body work in place. It just has a big block and the headers take up a lot of real estate.

Re: Remote mount oil filters

agreed. i'm wondering more about somewhere in front of the accessories. like building a crossmember between the frame rails and bolting it to that.

I never had a -AN (say that 5 times really fast LOL ) leak.

That should be fine.

Some mounting locations:

firewall

Lower core support in front of radiator

battery tray / charcoal canister
(assuming battery is in trunk or the canister is deleted).

Re: Remote mount oil filters

I made an adapter plate to mount to the side of the block where the original engine mounts attach. The System 1 filter points forward under the front motor plate. I also have an accumulator teed into the outlet side of the filter.

Re: Remote mount oil filters

Matt is there any room in the front wheel well. Forward of the tires..I seem to recall. Room under the bat tray. Or charcoal canister. That you can still get to.I'm at work right now. And don't have my car looked at but I seem to recall.room on each side.

you know down there by the steering housing bolts on each side of the car

Re: Remote mount oil filters

honestly, i'm thinking more along the lines of how stephen has his. i don't really want it in line with the wheels, would like to keep it centered under the car as much as possible in the event there is a leak it doesn't go directly under a tire during a rapid acceleration contest.
