Rear tire and wheel sizes
Hello y'all I'm Shane I have a 86 firebird stripped I'm in the process of installing a 454 and a th 400 tranny I have a stock width rear end with 4.10 gears I'm looking for a good drag race wheel width back spacing and tire size. I've searched with not much luck of understanding back spacing I'm looking to run a D.O.T slick due to our local track doesn't allow full slick on test and tune night . This car will drag race only looking to run a 15" wheel Thank you in advance

Re: Rear tire and wheel sizes
most (including myself) that run a 15 inch wheel run a 5.5 backspacing and a 28X10.5 slick or what ever that is in radial form. i cant believe your local track has any issues with tires on a tnt night. around here they break ***** about sound level(mufflered or not). good luck

Re: Rear tire and wheel sizes
15x10 rim with 5.5" of backspace is the most common choice. A 9x28 slick has no problems. Going to a 10.5x28 slick should work but may need some slight fender modifications.
You'll have to figure out what a DOT tire that you intend to use. The sidewall width is wider in relation to a full slick. Slick width is measured across the tread. A DOT tire is measured across the section. A 10.5 slick may be close to 12" with a DOT tire. A 10.5 DOT tire normally has around 8.5" of tread.
Going taller than 28" needs inner fender modification especially around the front radius of the wheelwell. With only 4.10 gears, 28" tall is more than enough.
Only allowing a DOT tire on TNT is BS. The only difference between an ET drag and an ET Street is the tiny groove marks in the tread to call it a DOT tire. It still isn't recommended to use the ET Street on the street.

6" is actually perfect, but hard to find, so people tend to choose 5.5" and let them stick out a little or 6.5" and hammer/cut the insides of the wheelwell up till they fit. Personally, I went with 15x9 and 5.5" which puts the wheel at the same offset as a 6" BS with a 10" wheel.

Re: Rear tire and wheel sizes
you can bolt on a15x 8.5 rim w/4.5 bs with a 28x12.5x15 and get a full foot print running 15psi. no mods needed.
28x12.5x15 15x8.5 w/4.5 bs
the big step is going 15 x 10.275wide rim w/6.5 back space.
LCAs need to be moved in 1"
inner fender needs to be moved back 2"
bump stops need to be removed.
more dep on tire size.
running a 29x13.5x15 is as big as i can go on my car. the g/fx get in the way to go taller.29x13x15 MT Sportsmen pro shown
91/92 camaros..older could be diff..

Re: Rear tire and wheel sizes
Can anybody help me out with these questions I have a 1987 Z28 that I bought a set of drag-thrust for the rear wheels are 15x8 with 5.5 back spacing and the front are 15x4 with a 1 3/4 back spacing the camaro came with a 1" drop springs on it I'm looking at a 275 60 15 tire for the rear and was trying to find out if this tire will fit well with the rim and 1" drop and what would be a good size tire for the 15x4 up front. The car has both 1" drop springs if front and rear. Thank you for your time

You may have issues with the drop though and trying to fit a 275 60 R15. If you remove the drop they'll fit just fine (that's what size I have).

15 x 8 with 5.5 BS using 28x10.5 slick
This is the narrowest wheel you can run with a 10" slick
