Autocross Rims for the 87 GTA

I have an 87 GTA 5.7L Auto, has a TDS steering brace installed, stock street tires and rims. I have been placed in ESP due to headers, non stock exhaust, ECU mods, injectors, CAI, etc. I am so non competitive and my biggest issue is tires not sticking when I get on the gas. Everything I have read says to get tires and rims first, so I have decided on getting the TOYO Proxes R888.

Onto my question.

The rims out there are either good quality and 1500 bucks each or **** and 225 bucks. What are some rims and sizes that folks are running for Autocross and how is the weight, fitment and cost?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks peterc005!

Those look awesome, do you have any personal experience with these rims? The weight seems kind of high at 20 pounds, cost seems reasonable.

It is extremely hard to find direct fit 3rd gen wheels that weigh under 25lbs due to the offset and limited designs on the market for 17" x 9.5".

BTW, those are our wheels (I am CTW Motorsports).

Nice rims!

They do look good on the car, to be fair I am comparing the weight to a set I got for my Nissan TT car. So big difference there, but same 17" x 9.5, they came in at 17.6 lbs each.

We're running the Year One Snowflake repros in 17x9 on our GTA. They are heavy though. But the look is what we wanted without paying $800 each for the other snowflake repro options. We may run again at SCCA Nationals this year in the newly announced CAM-C class where the only real rule is it has to be a plated insured street car on 200 treadwear tires.

Do you have a raw weight number (no tires)?

It's all due to the offset.

The BMW version of out wheels (9" width) comes in at 17.1lbs each - probably 17.5lbs in 9.5" if they made them. Move up to a 0mm offset makes you pick up 3lbs in material. There you go.

Unfortunately I never weighed them. They are heavy though. Center section is at least 1/2 inch thick on the casting. I would recommend extended length wheel studs for anyone wanting to run these.

Re: Autocross Rims for the 87 GTA

Thanks everyone for the information and the discussion. This is exactly what I was hoping for when posting this question.

The CTW wheels look to be a very good option for me comparatively speaking.

I ran 16X10 REAL wheels for awhile. The only problem is they don't make anything bigger than 16" diameter. So you're pretty limited on tire selection as there aren't very many choices for wide 16" tires (I ran 275 Hoosier A6s). But they're around 15 pounds apiece and $300/wheel!

Don't really like the CTW wheels,
spokes are to thin looking.

Agree wholeheartedly, And I bought a set of Real Rims FROM PAT and have been running them on my autocross Z28 for about 7-8 years. I have been happy with them, very lightweight and very nice wheels. I am looking to upgrade to some 17" CTW wheels and some meatier tires, but we'll see..

Re: Autocross Rims for the 87 GTA

For cheaper solutions, you can go with factory 16" wheels and run 225/55/r16 or 225/50/r16 tires. The tires in this size are also the cheapest because they're so many available and they're not really low profile and not that wide. You can also run factory C5 Corvette wheels and buy wheel adapters. Or you can run replica C5 Corvette wheels so you can run a square setup and use wheel adapters. But don't run factory C6 Corvette wheels because the 19x10 rear wheels will have those tires cost serious money, especially if you want to race more.

Re: Autocross Rims for the 87 GTA

Great info, thanks folks for the replies. I am still weighing my options, my times seem to be consistent, so I think to get any additional improvement I will need to step up to race tires. I also do not want to punish the original rims as they are in great shape.

I run BFG sport comp 2's on my stock 16x8 wheels. I recommend them in 245/50r16. these cars like a square set up, not wider rears. 225's give up too much grip i think. The only tires to consider in the 245 size are firstone fire hawks, the BFG, and Nitto NT01. I would have bought the Nittos but they are twice the money of the BFG's, half the tread depth, and I like to drive my car.

I think ride height makes a big difference in these wheels appearance. I like them on a lowered car but some of the pics with lots of wheel gap look weird to me. Either way I think they are a great option for autoX/RR thirdgens.

You would be impressed with the grip difference between the BFG Comp 2 and the Nitto NT01. I don't recommend the NT01 for street use though. They work but they aren't going to last very long. We did find the added grip worth multiple seconds on some fairly short courses though.

Absolutely! My thoughts exactly. I daily drive my car between race events so that's why I went with BFG's.
