Does anybody know if there is a club that holds road racing? I don't mean dragging down the interstate. i mean set up the cones and race for a time. I am looking for a group to road race with using my 86 trans am. I was wondering if anybody knew if there were any clubs that i could join... I would prefer to join a trans am oriented club though. i would like to avoid imports as much as possible. i am just an american made kinda guy when it comes to my cars.
What areas do you live in? There are plenty of groups around that do Track Days at Pacific, Portland, Oregen Raceway Park, Mission Raceway, etc etc....

If you want to go road racing you simply cannot avoid imports, sure F body and domestic clubs hold events now and then (usualy just once a year for each club) but if you want to do it regularly you'll be going to SCCA type auto X events and honestly you'll spend a lot of time getting spanked by imports .
You can hate them all you like but Civics can be damn quick on a small course.
Road racing is specifically built, high speed tracks. like Watkins Glen.
True, and actual roadracing is much more expensive than autoX. $30 for a full day vs $150 or more. And imports will still be at most events and many will be still be faster.
If you want stick axle vs stick axle racing lookup the Mustang Camaro challenge.
I live in battle ground washington. Near the vancouver area. and as i have come to find out from sources the type of racing i am interested in with little damage to your car other than your tires is called autocross. My dad did it with his 76 trans am and now i am interested in joining a club that will go against another club just like he did. either that or i am interested in just getting into autocross.
yea but i do know this. they sepperate the cars into classes in the autocross. does anybody know what kind of classes distinguish the cars? i guess what my dad did was he was part of the trans am club of oregon back in the day and he autocrossed against corvetes... i was wondering if there are any clubs like that without having to go deal with the imports in the actualy scca i beleive it is.
I think a trans am vs camaro club battle would be interesting... The road race i am interested in though too is against my brothers mustang. i betcha that my trans am will smear that mustang... lol james always brags about it... it doesn't handle nearly as well as my TA. especially since my 86 has the ws6 suspension and 4 disc brakes... thats all from the factory... it had a racing shift kit put in on the tranny... i love that car.

The CMC is the Camaro vs Mustang Challenge. Not sure if Trans Ams are "allowed" in as Camaros.
i checked out the website and firebirds can compete as well. the only problem is that it doesn't look like the cmc come out to washington or even portland international raceway... that and some of those cars definitely don't look stock. i really don't want to change my TA to something like a race car. i would rather leave it the way it is and use it that way.
I guess the sports club of america has a northwest chapter. i am interested in joining up with them and racing against some of the cars in the stock class A. The nice thing about that is that it would appear you don't have to install a roll cage into your car. That is a modification i really don't want to make. And by the way Stephen, you have a really nice GTA. Is any one else from the vancouver washington area and gone in the SCCA and competed? what is the compitition like? i know that my dad raced his 76 trans am against corvettes and spanked them good. Do the trans ams get spanked by the 80's vets? I know that the mazda rx7s are allowed in the class along with the subaru wrx sti. are all of those imports going to spank the cameros and the trans ams? and keep in mind that this is the stock class A and the rules state that there can be no modifications made to the car other than those that came from the factory.
I would recommend attending a racing school first and get some track days under your belt. Whether you'd like to do that or not, you'll need to get an SCCA license to do any kind of competition. Check out Team Continental, Pro Drive, or the Cascade Sports Car Club. They all hold track days at PIR.
