New Z28 in Seattle Area! DRIFT BOUND
Hello every my name is Levi! Im 20 and I live in Covington WA always been a chevy guy, have a second gen camaro with 454 and I recently got a 1986 Z28 5 speed t top! Its said to be a 350 but we will find out after running codes! Tips to tell the difference between a 350 and 305? Any how, its pretty clean, interior is pretty good, runs like a top, has a quadrapuke on it but its a torquey little thang.
My goal is a sweet drift car, dont think im going to rebuild the mild oil burning worn out original motor but either buy a great running 300-450 hp motor or buy a block and build one im still deciding. Hydrolic ebrake, wider control arms and steering knuckles, locked rear end, better tranny? And we will see what goes from there!
Quick question which ill ask in the Steering section if there is one so others can see, does my car have a 6 bolt pattern for the steering wheel or 9 bolt? Or is there both and I just have to look somehow
Heres a quick shot of it. Any other hoons out there?!

You won't find many, if any hoons in third gens. I speak for myself, and many others when I say that I don't like being part of a group that is frowned upon by 99% of society.

But, I put an aftermarker steering wheel in along with a quick release.
Also ordered a Stage 3 FX racing clutch. Mine started to slip.
Cruised to the drift track to watch an event and met up with some cool people!

Re: New Z28 in Seattle Area! DRIFT BOUND
So rare to see a 3rd gen drifting haha. I took mine out to an event yesterday in Victoria (across the ocean from you haha) but my car spins out too easily. I also broke my torque arm mount at the event which kinda sucked but I've been wanting to relocate it off the trans anyway for a while.
Mine's not really setup totally for drifting but it's got a welded diff, extended tubular A-arms, coilovers on all 4 corners, tubular LCAs, panhard bar, and 8-point roll-bar. It's also a Formula so it's got the 36/24mm sway bar package and the 2 1/4 lock-lock quick ratio steering box.
For power I'm running a turbo 3.5L V6 making over 400whp with a T56 behind it. Power is almost too much and makes it really easy to spin out. I'm hardly even boosting the thing at all at the drift track.
I'm strongly feeling the best thing I could do to set my car up better would be increasing steering angle somehow. A Jeep Grand Cherokee steering box is supposed to bolt up and provide an extra 3/4 turn of the wheel with the same quick ratio so that's probably the first thing I'm gonna try. My friend also volunteered to experiment with knuckle mods if I can find a spare set.
After steering angle the next best thing would probably be a hydro hand-brake. My stock one works just fine but is useless for drifting as it isn't powerful enough to lock up the tires (stock PBR rear discs).

Welcome! I'm right by maple valley myself! I just got an 83 firebird today. I was surprised to find it's the crossfire injection. Not sure how I feel about that :P

Thank you. Entire system is there, and it's even running fine. 170K, she is tired. Attempting to find details on rebuild kits for the crossfire. I assume same block and heads as traditional 305?

Re: New Z28 in Seattle Area! DRIFT BOUND
Still following this, trying to find a local shop in the Seattle area that could do modified knuckles, that would be the better way to get more angle, not just tossing in a steering box with longer throw. still pondering those tubular A-Arms without stops. id like to see a side by side shot of them at full lock vs stock arms. If theres a lot of extra room, im going with them.

Re: New Z28 in Seattle Area! DRIFT BOUND
This is the most angle possible without extended and notched a-arms. This is with a Jeep Grand Cherokee steering box, 17x7" 4th gen wheel with a 245/45R17 tire and 2.5" spacer. It comes within 1/2" of the sway bar, the steering arm on the knuckle is less than a 1/4" from the a-arm at lock turned to the right, and the tire comes within a 1/2" from the frame turned to the left with the knuckle contacting the a-arm (steering stop removed).
Modified knuckles and tubular a-arms won't get you any further unless you modify the tubular a-arms. They need to be extended at least a couple of inches for any significant increase in clearance. Even if the a-arm didn't interfere with the knuckle or tie rod end anymore the tire would still be hitting the frame and/or sway bar.

Re: New Z28 in Seattle Area! DRIFT BOUND
My suspension is completely stock. It runs pretty flat compaired to 240s and these bmw guys i race with. Im not changing it until my ls swap is done and i feel out the weight difference. Caffeine do you know how many degrees youve got? When i put my 2 inch spacers on i lost about 3 degrees and i shaved my stops down to about 1/4 inch of the tie rod to the sway bar. Im thinking of putting on 700+ lb springs and ditching my front sway bar. Im just worried about camber pull and body roll.
