hey everyone, my name is chris. i was introduced to this site recently and love it so far. i live on hickam and have had 3 camaros at the age of 20. i only have 2 now, but am still loving them more than anything! they are a 97 RS convertible, and my baby is a 92 Z/28 350 TPI. so anything you guys need, dont be afraid to ask! im lookin for some cool people who share my interest in what i like to call "mustang hating". im sure there's a couple of you in here! anyways, if there are any cruises or meets. i'd be glad to attend and boast the image of our beloved camaro's and firebirds. thanks for letting me be a part of one of the great pastimes that we know. -chris
Hey Chris, welcome to the boards. As I was reading your post, i was thinking, "This sounds so much like me, it's scary." I'm 20 (21 in three weeks, WOOOT!!) I've had 3 camaros as well, i also currently have only two (n' a half if u count the bucket in the driveway... yes it's still there Rob . My baby also happens to be a 92 Z-28, 91 RS for the daily driver. i don't; however, hate on mustangs. A couple of my friends have mustangs, and in my opinion, they're great people with the same passion for speed as me. Simply different means to the same end. I am of course a die-hard Chevy lover tho. i don't think you'll find many "mustang haters" per say, but you've come to the right place for third-gen lovin!
Danny

hey, no scott i didnt find that fuse. everywhere i go including the parts department at the chevy dealership either doesnt have it/know what the hell it is/ or cant look up fuses because they're generic parts(chevy dealership). so my radio is still not working! which pisses me off, but i still love just listening to my engine! haha. i looked in the haynes manual, just to check, and there is no fuse in the pics of the fuse box. so im starting to think that it is something else keeping my radio from turning on. but i have no clue at all. i'll talk to you later man.
The acc. power wire that goes to the radio runs through the "acc" (15A) fuse on the underdash fuse panel, check that out if you haven't already. There is also another fuse box off to the passenger side of the steering column that you may want to check... one of those fuses blew n' cut power to my deck in my IROC.

Danny (1320 Right Ln.) is right about checking on that "other" fuse box. It's called the "convenience center". Here's a link to another thread that I posted in a while back concerning this other fuse box. I posted a pic at the end of the thread. Then again I think only 85-89 had this extra box. But if I'm wrong, then that should be your problem. The fuse circled in the pic might be blown. Hope this helps!
hey guys, thanks for the help with all your suggestions. i still havent gotten it to work, and am gettin a little agitated. i pass my time and forget my radio problems by buying other things for the car. like the hypertech powerchip and lowering springs that i just bought. i have checked every single fuse there. some were blown but replaced. so im about to just say f*ck it and hardwire it to the battery w/ an inline fuse. thanks for all ur help again

That's how my CD player is hooked-up, so I can play tunes with the keys out of the car. Since I always remove the faceplate when the car is parked, there's no opportunity to forget the unit is on and drain the battery.
Chris, bring it over sometime this week and I can take a look at it for you. I work every day except this tuesday.
If you have my cell, give me a buzz before you dop by.
Scott

thanks scott. i actually just resorted to my laziness and did it up ghetto, but its only a radio. thanks for all your suggestions. anyways, this monday is gonna be full for me. i gotta change the water pump and put on some headers. wish me luck. haha, just me and my haynes manual. thanks again everyone for helpin out
Sup Chris you got a pimp name haha...anyways welcome to the site. Also do you know anyone who'd be interested in a 93 Z28 Camaro? Pushing around 400hp at the flywheel, a/c, power everything, 1k miles on motor, 36k miles on body, cd deck, etc. Only thing wrong with it is that it would look nicer with a new paint job. Selling for only $6k #382-7143
so everything is finally fixed, until yesterday......AAAAHHHHH. ok, so unfortunately, my friends are telling me that its that my piston rings are going bad......wow, that sucks! so that would mean that the amount i'd pay to fix it would be the same amount i paid for the car. **** ME! so someone with some knowledge please tell me that there is possibly something else with it. the engine is pushing oil up through the dipstick and when i hit the throttle hard, the dipstick comes off and oil goes everywhere. and there is smoke constantly coming out from the dipstick and the cap on the head cover where i put the oil in the engine. someone give me some good news please and if there is none, please tell me my options.

First, check the oil level and the filter, ensure correct level and oil filter is not blocked somehow. Bad rings will blowby out the exhaust for the most part, showing white or grey-white smoke on acceleration. Sounds like oil pressure is blowing out through a head galley ... the car probably wasn't doing this when you got it, when did it start? What did you do just prior...
In respect to what things cost for these cars, it's like anything one favors -- damn the torpedos and full speed ahead -- meaning I'm gonna need a car to drive around and I really like ThirdGens. Since I can rebuild one A-Z for less than $10K, if IROC needs an engine, it gets a new one. If it needs a trans, it gets one. Ditto for the rear end, etc. This includes big upgrades, like 383, ProBuilt 700R4 and 9-inch rear. Otherwise I gotta spend $60K to get the same performance in a new car.
Yeah, it's a hassle to fix things, but that's just the way things go sometimes...
my friends camry started doing that ever since he installed a supercharger. Only blown camry on the island as far as i know... Anyway, he installed on of those oil catch cans n' that seemed to help. In his case, the problem was indeed because of cylinder pressures exceeding the sealing capability of the rings. If oil can find it's way past the rings n' make u're fumes smokey, then cylinder pressure will most certainly make air pass the rings as well.
ok, i'll do that now that i have an easy job w/ lots of time off. though i have never done a compression test before, what should it be reading for my compression to be right. i know every engine is different but about what should it read? also what is the difference between a wet and dry test? thanx guys you rock!

Best place to start is over at the HAFB Auto Craft Shop near the back gate, next to the TV station. It will have all the tools, a lift, and someone knowledgable to assist.
ok, so my car is just one problem after another. i narrowed it down to the electrical system instead of the piston rings. it makes sense and i should have thought of it sooner. all my problems started after i put in a hypertech chip in my computer. thats when the engine started burning oil from inside and now the car wont even start. i put a brand new battery in it 4 days ago but none of the electrical stuff works! i got thinkin that maybe the chip fried my computer or electrical system somehow. on top of the car not even makin any sound when i start it up; the headlights or radio wont operate at all, and when i step on the brake....nothing. im thinkin its either gonna be the computer itself which is easy to replace or something deep in the electrical system which would cost more. either way, i have no idea and my car wont move at all. haha, it kinda sucks. but anyways, anybody who believes they can check it out and tell me whats wrong, then please let me know. i live on hickam afb and anything that anyone can do to let me know whats goin on would be greatly GREATLY appreciated. and i would definitely buy as much beer as you want if you can help me out! haha, just a lil gift to anyone who helps my baby! so lemme know. -chris

All cars are "one problem after another," only sometimes the problems are closer together than other times...
My '87 IROC has a Hyperchip and it works well, at least in turning on the fans early and a bit more aggressive performance tuning, so unless the chip is DOA, that's not it.
Easiest way to validate the computer and chip is to swap it out with a wrecking yard spare. If nothing changes, the problem is elsewhere.
It's possible the problem is self-inflicted ... if the battery wasn't disconnected while working on the electrical system, it's possible that a fusible link was fried. Bust out the voltmeter and check wiring to the starter and the main grounds from the battery.
