JASPER ENGINE?
I am considerig purchasing a jasper engine and trans. to replace the stock 5.7 tpi and tranny in my 87 iroc. Has anybody ever had on of these engines? I was quoted $6,400 total including labor and new transmission fluid cooler. Anybody know if these engines are any good?

Re: JASPER ENGINE?
there is one in my camaro currenly. seems like a great engine if you ask me. has been in mine for about 40k miles. no problems so far whatsoever. although for 6400 dollars you could buy a bowtie transmission and blueprint 383, just food for thought..........
what im saying is if your happy with stock setup and dont want to do the work, go for it. if your not afraid to get your fingers dirty you could do a lot more with your money.

Re: JASPER ENGINE?
6400 dollars could go a long way if you do the work yourself. I sent a 350 block to a local builder and less than $1000 I got an engine back that produced 393hp on an engine dyno. All you need is a friend, some basic tools, engine hoist, a weekend, and of course some beer. If I had your budget I would have over $5400 left.

Re: JASPER ENGINE?
I'm in Western Washington near Seattle. And at work we use Jasper engines for our fleet repair relacements both diesel and gas. We recently needed a refurbed head for a Ford 300 six. When we called the Jasper licensee (the local Jasper saleman had dropped off their brochure) that handle their work in this region of the coutry, up in Bellinham, they said their computers were down. Yeah, the computers were down alright. At that very time, the F.B.I. was seizing their computers and hauling off illegal alien workers in the plant. I got home from work and it was on the news. In the news video there was a Jasper truck sitting at a loading dock at the plant. We ended up sending the bad (Jasper with about 2 1/2 years on the longblock refurb) head to a local machine shop and let the unit sit idle while we waited for it.
We've had fair, not fantastic, luck with some of their Detroit diesel and Ford industrial 300 six rebuilds. But we've had a broken cam and seized exhaust valves in both diesel and gas Jasper rebuilds. But we also had a broken cam in a refurbed Ford engine too. I did see a nice CAT 3208 rebuild from Jasper when I was back East that ran really well.
Oh, and when I was back East I saw them mess up a Dana rearend that we sent ro them for a rebuild.
And I've heard some bad things about Jasper's hot rod engines but I don't have any personal experience to draw from.
I think that stuff coming out of the main Jasper, Indiana plant is probably better than from a licensee. I think the high performance stuff is done in it's own department.
If it was me, I'd do my own engine. That way you know the shop and it's work, and what parts are actually going in the engine.

Re: JASPER ENGINE?
Thaks guy for aa the feedback, I am in nursing school so my time is very limited currently. I think I am going to hold off on the Jasper engine for now, I realy want to either rebuild my tpi and add a supercharger. I want to try and keep things original to avoid the hassle of getting things rewired and alot of extra conversion parts. Thanks for all the helpful info.

Re: JASPER ENGINE?
When my original GM 305 failed with a cracked block at 117K, I went with a new GM Crate engine of the same type that came out of the car. The GM Warranty on the engine has since expired, but engine run great with no issues.
I too want to keep the car as original as possible, it will never be a numbers matching car, but its sure alot of fun to drive !!
Thanks
Rob
