SPECTRE 728 DUAL SNORKEL ??????

while on the JEGS website i came upon dual snorkel air cleaner . it looked very interesting to me . its called 728-spectre low profile ram air kit , spectre # 865-728 . ( O.K. you and i know its not ram air but a cool/cold air set up ) that being said , i was wondering if any TBI people had tried it ? any feed back ??? thanks .

Not sure about this kit but everything i`ve bought made by spectre was cheap Chinese junk.Just saying. It all broke pretty fast.Even a power steering fluid top i bought for my truck, cause it was cheap fell apart in my hand one day when i checked the fluid.Had it about 3 months.

Re: SPECTRE 728 DUAL SNORKEL ??????

I just saw the ad on Jegg's. I was just about to drop the $100 on it and thought I'd do some research first. The only review I've seen on this is on a 'Vette forum. The guy was going to buy it and was looking for info just like you and I. I'm thinking about getting it. I don't expect 50 HP, but anything it good. I would expect around 7-10 HP gain.

Re: SPECTRE 728 DUAL SNORKEL ??????

Really hard to go wrong with a cold air set up. Spectre has come a long ways from years ago when everything they had was pretty cheap stuff.

I believe that one in Jeg's has the flexible ducting but I'm gonna do something simliar to this on my tbi.
This set up is on Mary Pozzi's 2nd gen and she noticed an improvement right away with it. And if you don't know who she is - shame on you all!

On the surface it looks like a good alternative to Ramair or the old HO set up.

Just bought it from Jegs. Ships on Monday. It'll have to wait to get installed though as I'm stuck in Afghanistan at the moment.

Would this be significantly better on a TBI than something like this?

Re: SPECTRE 728 DUAL SNORKEL ??????

Dewey , the purpose for the snorkel is to let the engine breath cooler more dense air . while the filter you show does a good job filtering air it's warm less dense air . on a open engine it would be fine . under a hood is a different story . you want to pull in cooler more dense air . good luck .

Finally made it home from the desert and had the box waiting for me. It doens't fit. It hits the coil as well as the throttle. Good idea, but it would take some time and engineering to get it to fit correctly. I'm boxing mine up and sending it back.

Re: SPECTRE 728 DUAL SNORKEL ??????

I always wanted to try Spectre's carb/TBI hat with a length of 4" pipe going to a dual snorkel TPI airbox (unfortunately, my STB interferes): The link will load to the hat that I would've needed, but there are others as well. The link takes a moment to load.

Re: SPECTRE 728 DUAL SNORKEL ??????

iv got a 728 spctre but havnt gotten around to hooking it up but iv noticed that the tubes coiming out of the snorkles will conflict with the brake master cylinder and the A/C pump but it shold fit but it will have a very tight 90degree angle coming out in order to fit

Re: SPECTRE 728 DUAL SNORKEL ??????

I can't speak for the airbox quality but I have seen 2 cars make over 550rwhp with their filters. One made around 610 and didn't gain much of anything by taking the filter off. Both of those are made through autos too for what its worth.

Very cool man, thanks for the pics. Did you buy it all from the same place as a package? After seeing your pics I think I may go with a similar setup. If you don't mind me asking what did the whole intake setup put you back?

Wow, very cool intake setup. Similar to what I wanted. But that can't be that great, being right above the headers. I was going to continue the piping and go around where the headlight motors are.

Re: SPECTRE 728 DUAL SNORKEL ??????

@ itsMikey : the throttle response is very high !!

@ MadOTC : i have buy it on ebay complete for about 157 usd and the shipping was about 75 usd ! so it was worth it!

If you don't mind me asking what did the whole intake setup put you back?

Don`t understand what you mean sorry.

@ Daytona_83 : you have right,it`s not great to hang over the headers!
i will buy maybe this winter the other pipes to make it what you said.

thanks for all great comments

i have a fancy hood scoop on my car so i have some room to play with, but when i got my open element air filter for my car, i threw it on and screwed it down, not thinking to look at the throttle cable clearance...so im driving and the pedal isnt going all the way down right and it wont open up..sos i stomp it and well...the flippy thing the cable attached ton on the carb got stuck on the WIDE OPEN position lol....fun story..what i did was went to autozone and just got a air filter raiser for like....7 bux..works fine now

ok so, i have a fancy hood scoop with a decently open rear end by the window, would that help suck cold air in or is it just for looks...never really thought about that till i got this car

I cant believe any governing authority in Europe would let one of their subjects put a big nasty carburetor on their cars... That's cool you're able to do that.

Did you cut holes in your battery tray and the tray behind the driver's side headlight and put the filters inside the fenders? Or are they just right behind the headlights?

And where is your alternator?

Spectre has a LOT of different carb intakes... peruse their website. The one posted a few posts up is quite nice looking, IMO.

Re: SPECTRE 728 DUAL SNORKEL ??????

I started with a similar kit from spectre. I removed the inside headlights and was able to keep the alternator and coolant overflow in place lots of cold air!

Picture are not that great as the car has been in storage for a couple of years.

Nice that you tried to copy my setup,
Maybe it looks beter if you replace your battery in the back of the car

I love that setup. What may also work well is just using that carb hat, with a straight pipe into the TPI-style Camaro airbox. It would be a nice clean, almost stock-looking installation, and would be pretty easy to do.

That is SWEET!! Of course , the battery would need to go to the trunk and you'd need to lose the carbon canister. Looks do-able though!

EDIT: -On someone else's car though..not mine.

I'm hoping to try something similar on my LS swap, but it'll probably boil down to whether I'll have room to stuff the MAF in front of the throttle body without pushing the CAI into the radiator.

Re: SPECTRE 728 DUAL SNORKEL ??????

Hi Everyone,

Just purchased the SR 728 and this will not clear the master cylinder. The duct does not go in far enough.
I have an older 2 pc RMS block. If you're running a Qjet you will also need a spacer.
The 728 has vent inlets at 180 degrees. Spectre makes the same style with 150, 135, and 120 degree inlets. I believe the 150 would work, but it looked like the 180 would to.....has anyone installed this style of air box on their ride?

Re: SPECTRE 728 DUAL SNORKEL ??????

Thanks, you should run a 4 inch tube out of the engine compartment and then install filter to that. You will be amazed at the additional power you will get from the denser air. That is the reason I purchased the SR 728 it is like a normal air cleaner, but it is enclosed except for two 4 in ports on either side that can be ran outside to cooler air.. A bit different than the carb hat you purchased, but same idea.

Re: SPECTRE 728 DUAL SNORKEL ??????

With your hood raised that much you should be able to get the larger 16 inch version

I have looked into this for the stock hood and their 180 hits the master cylinder, the 150 degree won't clear the PVC value, valve cover and the stud T handle kit (I have chrome valve covers), the 135 and 120 degrees won't clear the alternator. Looks like a 140 would just sneak by, but they don't make one with that degree.
