oh no.... hmm, ok then. well just to make it easy on you let me explain what brandywine is. brandywine is a paint name for a paint code of the clear dye that is layered over the gold base. use a silver base and the name changes. two different agents in it that separate it from the candy red hok and brandywine. the point to this explanation is to understand that i could have two different cars with the exact same brandywine top coat and base yet they could look completely different on how i layer it and even what clear i use.

i used the brandywine reduced and a gold base mixed with the pagen gold to make the effect i wanted. using the brandy wine i could cover more with less layers allowing me to add different stages without having 12-15 coats on the car. this was very important to get the color i wanted with the quality of the paint and not have it so thick that it would flake or crack driving down the road. another good reason why it took 4 tries to get it right.

there is also a specific candy red dye which is lighter and takes much more layers to get a darker color. many use the orion silver with the candy red dye to get a nice glow candy or a deep candy. i wanted a color very similar to my dark metallic red paint so i had to start with something darker. to do so i had to use the brandywine which is very dark, thinned it out and there you have it. the more layers you use and how much you thin it out changes the color. at it's thickest stage the candy red just won't do it which is why brandywine is so popular for the darker levels. you have to be careful on your base though or you'll turn brown like above.

also you can achieve the same effect through other companies like dupont, ppg, basf and the rest for a fraction less if you or your painter have access. HOK makes it very nice for someone who doesn't like to mix paints to get a desired effect. HOK also makes a very nice product for durability through fading which is important and why it is more then the average way of mixing something off the shelf. i wouldn't recommend mixing unless you've done it before as you could have the chance of running product like i did where the chemicals don't flow well and you get spotting. my first two trials the car ended up separating the metallic and looking like a dalmation because of it.

here is brandywine with zero thinning and a very dark gold base. brandywine doesn't have to look brown.. if that's what your looking for let me know though. i have roughly 100 different cars with various stages of brandywine and similar styles from the basf line.

your right, the question was show a picture of brandywine... i guess i should have just plastered more pictures of my car??

that wouldn't have done anything and rather then doing so my point was to explain that there isn't one way to paint brandywine. a similar question would be to ask for a picture of blue camaros. brandywine isn't one exact color. i would have thought it was self-explained through the above but if you are unclear about something then let me know.

that's the one really neat thing about candies... for example you could take your car, wet sand a bit and add a color dye clear in any shade possible to custom make your candy as silver and gold bases really work the best. thin/lighten however you want. add pearls, metallics whichever you feel to the base and whatnot to come up with some really neat color combinations. it was a really hard choice for me between silver and gold for a base however it depends on what the final look is. the unfortunate thing is that it's tricky to paint being how you have to layer it perfectly. if your dye is too thin or two thick it can have a blotchy or unblended look to it. this is where you'll see alot of custom candy cars that have lines or faded sections to them. the chance to make your own unique color is what makes it so much fun. i personally prefer gold over the two though mainly for the darker properties. it adds more depth to the color of choice, however i really like the glow that silver can bring. i've been trying to find a gold that actually glows for so long. if you play with HOK's neon line you can come up with some really wild colors, a dark glowing midnight blue for example is really something to see.

ask him what type of primer he used, wether it was white, gold or brown. what type of gold he used and what type of dye he used. if anything special was added to the gold and if the dye was diluted. the layers of each is nice to know as well. good information in case you ever have to try and match something down the road.

for the most part i used a brown base. wish i would have used white.
i used a mixture of pagen gold with added metallic. wish i had used their micro flake instead.
i used the brandywine dye and diluted it twice what they explained for the lightest chip. that part worked out well for me. technically i could have went with their candy red but i would have had to add another layer or two to get the same color.

Damn these 4-stage paintjobs are complicated.
Anyway, yeah I thought Brandywine was the brownish color above, which I think looks awesome personally. Like it was called "Kandy Brandywine." And I thought yours was just called "Kandy Apple Red." Learn something new every day.

not a big deal, just wanted everyone to know how things are so they aren't taken when it's time to have something painted. nothing worse then wanting one thing and getting something different. brandywine is typically darker in color. it's only more brown if it's chosen to do so. if you wanted to put any label on brandywine in it's most popular form a black cherry would fit it best or years ago cherry red would suit it.

In my painting class at school my teacher showed us this film from HOK where the painter showed how to paint with the candy colors....on the film the guy painted a 2nd Gen camaro brandywine. it was amazing to see the steps that go into getting all the stages done correctly. The painter said that the difference between a professional painter and ones that think they are professional is how well they can paint with candy colors.

I learned the biggest mistake ppl make while shooting candy colors is the way they hold the gun while spraying. if you dont hold it perfectly level at all times the candy colors will pool.

Anyway, just felt like sharing because my new knowledge excited me lol

HOK Kandy Apple Brandywine, now that is one bad *** color, saw a 69 RS/SS take best paint at Auto Fair at Lowes Motor Speedway. I am still impressed with that color, o much that I WILL paint something that color! Looked red with a gold base that changed colors alot. I took many pictures, let me see if I can find a few.

honestly if you want it lighter you should try the candy red with a gold base unless you are looking for more brown tones. you really need to play with it unless there is one of the color chips in the chart that you just absolutely love it will be some work.

not only this but imagine having to do it perfect 4-5 coats or more... definately need someone skilled to make it look even which makes a real candy color expensive over most others.

Yeah we will do a few test panels, I also want to see it with red base. I wish I had my chips but I can't find them. We might do some marbelizing also.

I could only get the color out of the guy. I will say those pics are CRAP they do NO justice to the actual color. Abubaca and a few others have seen that car in person and they could tell you it was just amazing.

Im not sure if its the same paint or not, but I saw a local hotrod that had a color called candy wine, and let me tell you that thing was amazing. The depth and color to the paint was just unreal, it was a VERY pretty color.

I couldnt appreciate candy fully until I saw it in person....everytime I walk out to my car and the sun is beating on it, I try to capture the transparent glow it gives off, but it looks more like flat red on camera

you'll need some sort of flake in the paint to make it stand out like the one above... the heaviest of metallics just doesn't seem to show up on the average camera. i'm sure a nice expensive unit might help though.

yea, the gold basecoat that was used on my car is extremely metallic, but the flakes are subtle at most angles in person let alone a camera

We used a gold basecoat on ours.... it is PPG pure gold which is pretty much composed of medium fine flake with some clear substrait to hold it on the car.

And no, you can't photograph candy... at least not with a cheap digital like we have.

IMO Gold basecoat is definitely the way to go... with silver, you often get pink flip when the sun hits it.

White base makes it even more "pink". I had a friend with a candy red color over white and it turned so pink in sunlight that we called him Barbie! Another friend of mine stuck a Mary Kay sticker on his back window once too! LOL!

i wonder why the painter did that. you would use white as a primer base for the silver base coat but to use it as the primary base color would most definately turn pink... that must have been something.

Probably because the painter was a know it all punk with a cheap parts store paint gun. He pissed another guy off that I know... He was supposed to paint his blue Ford Ranger red and this guy thought he'd be real smart and "use up the red candy color". Guess what color his Ranger came out?
