should i paint racing stripes before/after basecoat?

bought paint for cars super jet black i stage paint. i'm going to put on silver racing stripes. i'm worried about paint being dry to mask and paint the stripes and also about the paint lines. i am applying xtreme clearcoat over the paint last even though its a one stage paint i am using. should i spray the silver on the hood and spoiler first , then mask of in the design of the stripes, then apply black paint, or doi it normal with stirpes after base. if i do it that way shound i tape the stripe designs then sand and paint or would i just be ble to tape the spray silver. help please. friday is d day

i am no expert but i am pretty sure that you spray the whole car with your base coat.. let it dry.. mask the stipes and then spray them with no sanding..let it dry and lay down the clear.

like i said.. i'm no chip foose, but i'm pretty sure that's how he would do it.

Re: should i paint racing stripes before/after basecoat?

I am also looking into this. From what I have seen, the stock stripes are actually stick on (strange, but we are talking GM here ). I believe stripes are normally painted over the base coat and then clear goes over that.

Why are you using a one stage paint and then putting clear over it? I am assuming you mean the old style enamel paint. I am most certainly no expert, but I think there is a reason why base/clear is done with different paint than one stage painting.

its urethane enamel, and on the directions its says for a show car shine , clearcoat can be added over it.

Re: should i paint racing stripes before/after basecoat?

yes its fine to clear over singlestage paint and what i would do is base the whole car, let it dry tape out your stipe then sand lighty with like 600 grit then spray. if you dont sand the single stage paint before you apply the stripe it could cause problems. paint needs some sort of texture to stick to. you may not be able to feel the texture if sanded with 600 or up but it is their. if you where using a base/clear for the car then you wouldnt need to sand it before spraying the stripe but since you are using singlestage it would be like trying to paint a car that still has a shine on it, it wouldnt stick.

Re: should i paint racing stripes before/after basecoat?

if i let the single stage black dry, will the clear still stick properly, i don't want to sand the black to apply the clearcoat.

tape the stripes after the black dries, then scuff your black (I'd use 400-600), before you put down the silver, then untape it and clear it all.

Re: should i paint racing stripes before/after basecoat?

thats my question, my single stage paint doesn't have to have clear but i'm doing it anyway. the single by itself has an amazing shine so i figured on top of that shine apply the clearcoat and i thought it should then be like its wet all the time, but if i scuff wouldn't that kill the shine of the single stage

Re: should i paint racing stripes before/after basecoat?

you dont scuff the whole car just tape out the stripe and scuff the unmasked area where you are about to apply paint. then clear the whole car. and yes the clear should stick. you could also do a test panel to make sure like an old door or something you have lying around.

Re: should i paint racing stripes before/after basecoat?

TMIC Would you scuff a metalic base coat? I know you can sand solid color but never metalics. Rattle can over single stage then clear over rattle can paint, just asking for trouble.... Just must humble opinion

why wouldn't you scuff metallic basecoat? hes just scuffing it so the silver will have a surface to stick to, but I'm not really familiar with metallics, is there a reason you can't scuff them? and I can't agree more, spraying clear over rattle canned paint just sounds like trouble.

Re: should i paint racing stripes before/after basecoat?

do yourself a favor, if your going to clear it, the use black urathane meant to be cleared as a two stage paint job, not clear over your single stage. i recomend this highly, but what do i know, im just a professional painter. if your gonna do it, do it right.

Re: should i paint racing stripes before/after basecoat?

i semi agree with charged 350, if i know without a doubt that i was gonna clear then i would use a base clear system, but on the other note i am also a painter at one of the largest independent shops in NC and we clear over single stage ALOT. yes sometimes we run in to trouble mostly with "sweatback" but its nothing that a little water sanding and buffing wont fix. i figured since you already had the paint you could give it a shot but whatever you wanna do, afterall it is your car.

Re: should i paint racing stripes before/after basecoat?

You may run into a problem clearing over the rattle can paint. It may cause the clear to crack fisheye etc. I would suggest picking up some silver paint to stripe with the clear, just due to the fact clear coat is awesome but very tempermental.

Re: should i paint racing stripes before/after basecoat?

i don't know if you are interested, but i am sure that o'reillys carries pre-mixed quarts of base coat (only in a few colors though.. i am pretty sure they have silver). it is usually next to the spray cans.. i believe it is a duplicolor system. they carry the clear also. i believe it is pretty inexpensive too... just thought i would throw that out there as an option to the rattle can.

I just painted my car with a clear coat base coat and wanted to give it another coat after the clear dried. I lightly sanded the clear and re cleared it and the paint wrinkeled like painting lacquer over enamal. What do I need to do to repaint?

Re: How to repaint a cleaar coat base coat?

I would base and clear the whole car.Sand the panels that are getting the stripe with 600.Lay out the stirpe, tape it out,and base the stripe.Remove the paper and tape from the stripe and re clear the panels where the stripe is.
