Rust repair - Drivers side door/side view mirror.
hey, this is my first post here, anyways i bought this 85 z28 a while ago for $1500, great car but it needs some body work.
The worst part of the body is these 2 spots here.
One is right under where the drivers side mirror and door join together (picture below) It is very rough around the spot and a small hole has formed.
One is beside the windshield on the A-Pillar. It looks liek someone tried to fill it with bondo or somethign, or some clear goopy crap. you can tell its rusty, and very rough, uneven, etc...
Now my main concern with the door is...is this somethign that pouring some por-15 onto will cure?
what would you suggest?

the only way to fix rust is remove it, por 15 will not keep it from spreading.

Those spots are bad enough that it will need to be cut out and have new metal welded in. POR will slow it down though, so will a wire brush and spray can primer too.

hit the spots with small sand blaster spot blaster.. then you will see how bad it is if not that bad after sand blast.. use fiberglass. to repair and rust encapsulator.. for cheap fix.. should ok..

from the picture it is hard to tell... I would take an agressive abrasive of some sort to it. if you end up eating a hole in the body before the rust is gone then you will have to cut/weld but if not you can maybe fix it cheap and easy

that is the way to never fix rust, I have repaired alot of cars with that type of repair, and the fiberglass was held on by the rust, there was no structure left. The por 15 stuff does not convert rust (I have done a few cars with it, and tested it and not once has it stopped rust from spreading, it will stop it from starting though)

Properly applied, products like POR15 WILL stop rust from spreading. You need to follow all of the steps.
The products seal off the rust...without oxygen, it cannot spread.
But, if the metal is very thin or already has holes, the only way to solve the problem is to cut out the affected areas and replace with new metal.

Check other areas before you start putting work into those areas. I'm a proud supporter of POR-15, however, I have never put it directly over rust. I will say that it will prevent it from forming, but I don't want to guarantee it will stop it from spreading. Find out if one of your buddies welds, or someone you know. Or this could be a great excuse to buy a welder and learn by yourself. First and foremost, check other spots for rust/rot before you put too much work into the car.
