Does anybody know how to take off the front bumper cover on a 1992 Firebird? Also, is there any repair manuals that show how to do this sort of project?

besides the obvious plastic push in fastners underneath the bumper and chin spoiler there are 3 or four nuts that connect the bumper to the fenders on the inside also two that connect the header panel to the car as well under the plastic piece by the hood lock

You will have to take the head lights out to get to the nuts that secure it to the fender.

Having done this recently Ill try to be as step by step as possible
This will take you a good little while 1-3 hrs

1) Headlights
2) Fender bolts
3) Lower push-in retainers
4) Lower gfx bolts
5) Upper bolts
6) Remove nose

Headlights

Pop the hood and raise the headlights, you can use the switch for this
Remove housing covers, 4x T15 torx
Remove lower assembly bolts by pushing your hand under the headlight, 2x 10mm A sparkplug ratchet with a deepwell socket works best here
Remove front bolts holding upper cover on, 2x 10mm
Lower headlights
Remove rear bolts for cover, 2x 10mm
Remove cover , unplug light, unplug motor, remove bolts holding housing to radiator support, 2x 10mm
Remove assembly as a whole
Total bolts used:
8x 10mm large washer black
8x 10mm small washer black
8x Torx

Fenders

GFX cars have 5 bolts, non GFX have 4
These are 10mm along a stud strip, be careful they like to shear
You need a deepwell with a short extension for the top bolt, all others are easiest with just the deepwell
Total bolts
8-10 10mm nuts

Lower push-ins

These are either super easy or super hard
Use a large flat screwdriver to slide these out slightly
Needle nose pliers are best to pull them the rest of the way out
There are 5

Lower gfx bolts

91 cars have 3x 9/32" bolts
92 cars have 4x 10mm bolts

Upper bolts

Near the latch
5x 10mm

Remove nose

Use painters tape along the edge of the fenders to prevent the stud strips from scratching them
The nose is not going to fall off on its own, but it will resist because of the honeycomb

Hey Guys!

I just used the above thread as a Guide, and as I'm removing / converting my 1985 Firebird front bumper nose to a Knight Rider nose I'm really thankful for the above.

I'd like to add a bit of detail from a non car guru for those of us that are just doing project cars as hobbies.

It took me 1 hr and 15 mins and it would've been fast to remove the bumper had I had all the right tools. I am writing this piece just 5 minutes after the bumper came off so its fresh.

NOTE: I did not need to remove my headlights or assembly at all.

I'll start from the bottom and work my way up.

1. Remove 5 screws that are a 6mm that keep a thin triangle shape piece of plastic connected to the bottom of the fender and the front bumper

2. Remove the 6 pushpins that are about the size of a nickel that go from left to right along the bottom of the bumper from fender to fender

3. Now the fun part...
> There are 4 bolts that hold the front bumper to each fender on each side

A. *** the bottom 2 are easy to get at with a 10mm short socket,
they come from the fender into the bumper

B. *** the top 2 are harder and require a long 11mm socket, and are not the
easiest to get at. They come from the bumper INTO the fender, and
have a nut that is very easy to shear so be patient and cautious.

75% of the bumper is now loose

4. The only thing left is the 4 x 6mm screws holding the top of the bumper lip to the platform that the hood clamp is on. Now these I were not able to get off because of the angle that wouldn't let the socket wrench get enough torque + rust, but if you can then that's it and the bumper slides off nicely.

Now for the Knight Rider nose, I have a Knight Passions 3rd season, so the plateau where the hood connects to the clam, juts out too much. AS I said above I couldn't get the last 4 6mm bolts out, so I ended up:

1. Removed the 2 amber indicator lights with a philips screw driver
2. removed 4 or 5 x 11mm that got the 1 piece left out of the way and the bumper came off nicely
3. However the hood clamp plateau stuck out too much, so I had to remove that as well... 4 x 11mm and that came up.

*** I did not need to remove the grey 5mph safety bumper

I could now attach my Knight Passions front bumper to the car. I went out and bought all new bolts for this.
