Where to get HOOD struts for fiberglass hoods?
I need some hood struts for my fiberglass hood, and have been told not to use the stock ones because they compress too hard and will risk cracking the hood when shutting. i have seen them somewhere for sale before but can't remember. Does anyone know???? or are you with fiberglass just using one shock?????HELP!

Re: Where to get HOOD struts for fiberglass hoods?
im in the same boat as you...have a fiberglass hood and was told not to use stock hood struts...i would like to know as well...
i was told that if you can find a very used/beaten up pair that doesnt work all the way (on a stock hood) it would be better since the fiberglass hood doesnt have the weight the stock one does.. however, cant find any beat-to-crap struts.
right now i use a painter's roller extension i got from home depot. it was 20 bucks... put a rubbger **** on the end of it and it compresses on itself like a baton. i stick it in their and rest it by the battery tray when i need to get under the hood.
if you get a real answer on fiberglass hood struts let me know.

Re: Where to get HOOD struts for fiberglass hoods?
Been discussed here by me before.Heres what I found.
method 1:find a used set that can't hold up a stock hood.
method 2:go to the local auto parts store and buy the ones for 82-84 z28(they had factory fiberglass hoods)
I went with method 1 on my black GTA

Im using a set of old worn out ones i kept for no reason when I bought my new ones for the stock hood. Sold the hood sold the new shocks. Surprising how cheap my fiberglass hood ended up being after selling all that GOOD crap lol!

i was told also to use the 82-84 set also. just didn't really know who sells them and do you trust a low parts group to have the correct struts? maybe i am overthinking it?????
funkdubie- how are yours working????? doe they hold the hood up well and not be a pain to shut??

Any ones will work just take out the shocks and add a support stick to hold it open.

Does anyone make a metal bracket for you guys that the stock strut would adapt to,taking some of the pressure off of the fiberglass ?

Hey what about the hatch???
Ones for the hatch are to strong for my fiberglass notch back.
THey sell 2 kinds, with and without wing.
Both are to strong, making the corners of the hatch lift when closed.
DId they ever sell ones special for the factory notchback?
Or did it weight just as much as a regular hatch?
see sig

HOOD PROP ROD FOR FIBERGLASS HOODS
1967-69 Fiberglass Hood Prop: Hood prop required when installing a 1967-69 Yenko/Baldwin Motion fiberglass hood on you Camaro. Since hood springs are not recommended when using fiberglass hoods, this prop is essential for keeping your hood open while working in the engine compartment.

Re: Where to get HOOD struts for fiberglass hoods?
I recently bought a pair of hood struts for my steel hood from a GM dealer.
It turns out they are actually StrongArm lift supports made by AVM Industries. The label on the strut is identical to the one you would get from Autozone or anywhere Mighty Lift or StrongArm struts are sold.
The StrongArm part # (4422) is actually on the part, in the GM packaging.
I often buy parts from the dealer if I don't know who makes good quality replacements, but if I can find out who makes the parts for GM, the price can be much less.
I priced the trunk struts and the discounted dealer price was 3 to 4 times Autozone's for the EXACT same part. (the hood struts aren't as much, so I don't feel too bad)
Here's AVM's web site.
http://www.avmind.com/
They have a lookup page that shows all of the part #s for different applications. (It takes a while to find) But is seems like they have parts for pretty much every 3rd gen hood & trunk.
Does anyone know who else supplies parts for GM?
It would be nice to know who makes certain parts so we can save money but still get the same quality.
Thanks.
