No, it wasn't.

Just because that's the first 4 digit number you saw on your door sticker, that does not mean your vehicle actually weighed that much.

Re: How much does YOUR car weigh??

I'll have to get a pic of it.

I thought it was weird too considering the curb weight specs listed on the GTA Source show the car should weight between 3460-3530lbs.

Re: How much does YOUR car weigh??

I am considering purchasing an '87 Z28 with the LG4 / T-5. This particular Z is a hardtop with NO power options, NO a/c, NO radio, etc.

It has manual leather seats.

Any idea on what the weight would be?

Thanks!

My fully loaded 87 IROC-Z in bone stock form was shipped from the factory to the dealer at 3478#. My GAWR comes in at 4288#. The GTA should be similar.

Re: How much does YOUR car weigh??

Ive had two on certified scales

1985 Trans Am LG4
T-Tops
AC
Automatic
9 Bolt Rear
Power Windows and Locks
3140 with a full tank

1991 Trans Am GTA
Hard Top
AC
Automatic
10 Bolt Rear
Power windows/locks/seats and Airbags
3480 with a full tank

Neither Car had any weight reduction or was modified from stock in any way and should serve as a good benchmark for the models if anyone wants to piece these together year by year, model by model.

Ive got subrame connectors, a ford 9", a strut tower brace, and ttops and weigh 3200 lbs. ive also got an aluminum motor, aluminum driveshaft and an a/c delete.

id like to get some plastic ttops, and some light 4th gen seats....

when i put my magnacharger on i probably can expect to gain about 50 pounds...at least it will be good weight though.

Update, 2980. Again on a certified scale. Gutted everything, basically if it isn't essential to vehicle operation or safety it isn't on the car anymore.

I was saying 3340 without a driver. My Formula with AC/Smog delete, Aluminum heads, Fiberglass hood/spoiler came in at 3252. I don't see how you lost 200lbs from what you have listed. Just weigh the car and stop guessing..Goto your local scrap yard they will have a scale.

1. 1992 RS
2. 350 L05 / 700R4
3. T-tops, Ac semi delete.
4. Fiberglass hood, No spare tire, rear seats gone, full tank of gas, C5 rims.
5. 3469

Sound about right? Does a full tank of gas really make that much of a diff?

Yes.
Gas weighs 6-7lbs per gallon (depends on temp, colder gas will weigh more), and most third gen tanks hold 16.2 gallons (IIRC), so a full tank will contain 97.2-113.4lbs of gas, and an empty tank will contain 0lbs of gas.

I have never heard of the temp effecting the weight of a petrolium product and I loaded trucks at a refinery by weight hot and cold. Temp will increase the volume, not weight per gallon.

BTW gas is 6.5 lbs per gallon

Here's an example. If you seal 1 gallon of gas in a container (6.5lbs), at 60*F, then the temperature decreases to 40*, you still have 6.5lbs of gas in that container, but now the volume of gas is less than 1 gallon.
So, the weight per gallon has increased in this situation.

No sir, 6.5 lbs of gas makes 1 gallon regardless of temperature.

Re: How much does YOUR car weigh??

Volume and density change with temperature.
A gallon of fuel at 80F has more volume and less density than a gallon of fuel at 32F. Gas pumps are calibrated at a specific temperature. Something to read next time you're pumping gas.
It pays to buy your fuel in the morning when it's cooler. Denser fuel equals more in the tank for a given metered amount.
If going strictly by weight (as in F1 racing ) then it doesn't matter what the temp is. You have so many kilos (or pounds ) of fuel permissable regardless of temp or the amount of space it takes up.
It's still a gallon at 6.5 lbs if the gallon is based on a specific gravity (which it is) rather than a volume (which it isn't).

Seems like a good explanation, but I still have a question.
You're saying a gas tank filled up when it is 32* will weigh more than one that is filled at 80*?(basically what I was trying to say originally, but I guess my reasoning was wrong...)
I'm think I'm confusing myself...

It does make sense that trucks (and F1 cars) would be filled by weight, not volume.

like i said not going to a scale until august... the scrap yard is further away then the track... the back carpet weighs 40 lbs at least whats the front carpet weigh???, your formula has tpi correct?? if so thats heavier then a carb, your formula also has beefier sway bars prolly a few more pounds, your fomula has a carpet, back seats a center console a headliner all the interior plastics, 3rd gen rims, sub frame connectors probably has power seats too, my car is a bare bones base model with drum brakes not a formula that guys gta only weighed 3000 gutted and it has 100 lbs of ground effects , compare the weight of other bare bones cars on this thread... your saying that my car weighs more now then the day it was shipped after extracting at the VERY least 100lbs with just the heads and the carpets... thanks for repeating "just weigh it" though thats really helpful... i am just wondering and trying to get an "approximation" , if you dont understand that then why are your answering >? thanks for participating

Yes. If you fill when it's cold, the gas will have a greater density and weigh more per cubic foot.
Gasoline expands with temperature. A gallon of gas is based on a volume at a specific temperature. Without the relavent numbers handy, let's say for arguements sake, a gallon of gasoline fits in a one cubic foot container at 32F. It will overfill that same cubic foot container when the tempreature is raised to 80F.
Check out a plastic gas can that you leave out in the sun. It swells up noticeably when it warms up, however no additional gas has been added.

Re: How much does YOUR car weigh??

thanks for the explanation skinny z.

flippindabird, I think you are right to assume that your car weighs about as much as mine or less. I wouldn't be surprised if it was <3000lbs. I still had most of my interior then, except my HVAC, headliner, insulation, and back seat. But I don't think that rear carpet weighs 40lbs.

Re: How much does YOUR car weigh??

i actually read that weight in another thread here about weight reduction ill seach later to see if i can find it, 1 guy weighed stuff with a scale at his house and posted the weights, the carpet and the padding under were alot for my wife to carry lol the front carpet was heavy too, but even if its not 40 its still at least 15 and the front carpet is probably around 25 at least so together they gotta be 40+ but yeah i KNOW its not 3340, that would be more then it weighed from the factory lol

Nice! You really got the weight down. Sure that LS1 being all aluminum helped a lot.
