Whats the best paint/clear coat for the money to buy?

I'm think about taking on the task of repainting my car. I'm planning on painting its original metallic burgundy from 86. I haven't looked up the exact code yet.

Anyway what is the best place or web site to get good paint and clear coat that will last? The last owner had my car repainted 8 years ago and the clear coat is peeling already and I don't want that to happen again. Anyone know what causes this? I can't really go crazy with money on paint, which is why I'm doing it myself, but I don't crap either. Maybe around $1100 or $1200 for paint and clear coat. Thanks!

Check with a local autobody supply store. They will have different choices for paint, all the other stuff you need and free advice on how to do the best job possible with the materials you choose. Good luck. While very rewarding, doing a good job painting a car is no small task. Your going to learn a lot!

That's a good junk of change for just paint, I recommend using NASON paint, oreillys carries it. I spent $385 for the paint, reducer, clear, and activator. I got atomic orange 07-09gm color. My paint is one of the more expensive ones too. If u want a really good paint ild use spies hecker. One of the best paints out there

Re: Whats the best paint/clear coat for the money to buy?

I should have noted that I didn't really want to spend that much, I just thought thats what a good paint cost because that is the price all the auto body shops were giving me for materials. That would be great if I could get paint that was good for alot cheaper. Does I do want matalic red which probably will bring the price up from most colors. I'm going to be doing a lot of reserch to do it all right.

OReilly's carries Nason, which is a Dupont budget brand. I have used it before and was extremely happy with the results. Very affordable and held up to weather very well with minimal fading over the years. Easy to spray too. I plan to use this on my current car, which is russet color.

Re: Whats the best paint/clear coat for the money to buy?

Basically there are only 3 major brands of paint PPG, DuPont, or BASF.
Any off brand paint is usually a repackaged one of the forementioned brands.

Why are you only considering the base/clear coat paints ? Esp. if your car is a daily driver and not a trailer queen or ultra rare third gen.?
Did you think of using a single stage enamel instead? A quality gallon of the single stage can be had for around $100 and with a few additives and a good gun and booth can be smooth as glass when finished !

Heck I have had a few of my older rides done the "mop n glow" way! Dents and holes done skillfully with bondo and a few tacked in metal patches, a nice coat of filler primer, a bit of putty aka icing, some pre-paint prep sanding then shoot that mother with a $65 gallon of BASF-Limco deluxe single stage
enamel...................

Sure it wasn't a show car deluxe rotissarie job but just a nice dressup for a NY rust bucket !

Re: Whats the best paint/clear coat for the money to buy?

House of Kolors paint from Mississippi is the best paint/primer/clear coat, IMO. Their paint has more pigments in it's color then anyone else. I have done a Oriental Blue over Orion Silver and it looks great. The House of Kolor paint sometimes uses 1 color over another to get a great effects. All of the custom paint shops use HOK paint 95% of the time. It costs more but when the paint is applied right, the car will look like painted glass when done.

Here is a link to the 2010 top paint jobs on the HOK web site.

Here is a Brandywine over Orion Silver I believe C3 guy. Great looking paint, IMO.
