3rd Gen - 6x9's in the Front Doors
As the title says, anyone think this is possible? The bass in the rear 6x9's is just too much of a stretch to feel in the front and I think if I add 6x9's somewhere in the front, the audio will be much better. Any idea's?

Can it be done.. yes. But dont do it.
Get yourself a nice set of 6" woofers with a separate tweeter. Cut some plywood, Wrap it in Vinyl or carpet that matches the door.
THen put a sub in the back if you want Bass.

Re: 3rd Gen - 6x9's in the Front Doors
Right now I have two JL's in the back. The audio coming from the speakers is fine, but it sounds awkward hearing that full sound behind me, and nothing on either side of me. It sounds like something's missing. I have a Grand Cherokee with the Infinity Sound System which is stock. I put six Rockford's in total. Two in the back doors, two in the front doors, and two tweeter's on the dashboard. It sounds perfect in there. I'm looking for a similar setup in the Camaro.

Re: 3rd Gen - 6x9's in the Front Doors
The 4x6's in the front dash sound fine. Let me see if I can explain the issue better...
With the lack of the two front 6x9's, two issues come up.
One, the bass coming from the rear causes a slight echo throughout the car. It makes the bass sound slightly distorted when you're listening from the front seats. Adding two 6x9 bass/mid/hi's in the front doors would even out this bass distribution, stop that slight echo, and give the driver a more "fuller" sound experience.
The second issue; (If you have a second car that you normally drive, you should definitely notice this quicker). It takes me a few minutes to get used to the audio in the Camaro. The driver-side 4x6 is directly infront of the driver. So close, that the one speaker is the only one you really hear. It makes it sound a little lop-sided. (As if the opposite speaker isn't putting out equal power.) The 4x6 speaker sitting on the opposite side of you will always be alittle harder to hear, because it is so far away from your seat on the dash board. You SHOULD be hearing the driver side speaker through your LEFT ear. Instead, it's directly infront of you. The speakers in the Camaro are not spread apart like they are on in my Jeep. The Jeep's small tweeters are all the way in the far corner's by the A-Pillar. I hear the Left speaker with my left ear, and the right 6x9 with my right ear. These 4x6's are directly right infront of you. Adding two 6x9 bass/mid/hi's in the front doors will even out this audio distribution. Instead of just hearing my driver side 4x6, i'll hear my driver side 4x6 infront of me, my 6x9 to my left, and my 6x9 to my right. If we can figure out a way to integrate the 6x9's in the front doors, I'm telling you, it will make all the difference!

Re: 3rd Gen - 6x9's in the Front Doors
6x9's are not the way to go. I've been doing car audio since these cars were brand new. back in the day, I did do a 6x9 or 2 in custom door panel despite my strong urging to not do that.
6x9's are simply not a sound speaker design from the get go. oblong woofers are prone to distort.
as I said before, you are much better off going for a nice set of 6" component speakers for the doors rather than another pair of 6x9's.
I pulled my 6x9's out in back and replaced those with a set of 5 1/4" Componants even. The subwoofer in the trunk provides plenty of bass with no "echo" at all. I have a COnvertible, so the accoustics are a bit different that yours, but I've never heard any sort of echo in car audio..... Cars simply are not big enough to reproduce an acoustical echo.

If you are wanting more mid bass up front I would suggest a 6 1/2" in the door and a 5 1/4" and tweeter set up in the kick panel. Then replace the rear 6X9 with another component set. If your sound stage sounds low up front you can put a tweeter in each A pillar and fire them directly at each other across the dash. This set up will provide an excellent sound stage in our cars.

As already mentioned, if you want a better front stage. You can either put 6.5 in your doors and/or have kicks built. This would sound WAY better than putting 6x9's in the door.
In my car, once I start the system I'm actually deleting the rear speakers all together. Going for kicks, door, and subs.

i've opted for components in the kicks myself in my last 3 installs. cost and work is a bit higher, but sound will be much better. If you've got power windows, you have to build out the door quite a bit to clear the window motor

You'll get some mid bass, but not a low bass sound from them. They are not designed for that and that's what a sub woofer is designed for. They'll come with a separate tweeter that you'll want to mount close to it.

If you have subwoofers, you dont need more base from your component speakers. Bass below 120hz is omnidirectional. you cannot localize it. if you think you can tell the bass is coming from behind you, its probably second harmonics and rattling of various components of your car thats causing the "Directionality". Get some Dynamat. Stiffen your subwoofer enclosure. get a better amplifier. better subwoofers.

You could also get an amp with a "phase" function that would allow you to bring the bass forward...Just a suggestion.
Mids in the kick is good advice.

there right oblong speakers distort to easily. if your not looking for custom stuff but want a nice look and great sound, i will add, kick pannels and components are the way to go, the only bass you need will be from the sub, thats its soul purpouse, and if your trying to push it out of your 6x9s and any mid rand speaker, it will sistort, its not desighned for that, and you will loose clarity. use you speakers for mid and highs, leave the bas for you sub.... the fidelity will sound much better and use less power... im curently making new door panels to house 6501 polk components, mid woofer in the door, tweeter in the dash. mounting the same set in the same in the sail pannels as well, and im only using 1 10inch l5 kicker in the back running of a 1200 watt jl mono block... if i wanted to the sub alone could rattle ear drums.... but we all know that sound like crap so granted i have it turned down so it works with the rest of the system, and filles the car with a nice smooth low tone, without trying. so its always consistant, you could also try running a capasiter too.

Re: 3rd Gen - 6x9's in the Front Doors
One really good set of 6.5 components in the door with the tweeter down low will keep the front sound stage optimal. Tweeters low will keep the distance from your ears close to the same so that it doesn't interfere with timing. Ditch the 4x6's all together. A set of 6.5 mid-bass/woofers in the sail panels (no tweeter). I would put a small 4 channel amp on them for extra clarity and freq control, high pass the front at about 80hz low pass the rear at 100hz. Would be an incredibly clean sounding system. Then add a sub and amp in the back. You'll fall in love.
