i pulled a 305 out of an 85 caprice classic, and am rebuilding the stock carb. it's the rochester quadrajet, but i cant figure out how to tell which rebuild kit to order for it and believe it or not the chilton manual actually turned out to be useless for me this time. I'm pretty sure it's the E4ME though. also, the top of the pistons told me this was running rich. how do i lean it out? which screw is it?

if its the computer one still then yea its the E4ME


all you need is the stamping numbers off the side of the carb for the auto parts store to get you the kit

its really simple and easy

and the carbs are real simple and straightforward to disassemble

the hardest part really is punching the roll pin far enough to get the accelerator pump arm off, and also reinstalling the primary needles and hanger and piston

it is real tricky lining them up down through the phenoly spacer holes

these carbs are really simple otherwise




the kit comes with exploded view diagram and listing of all the parts names

all you need are the stamping numbers off the carb


search google, as there are lots of pics and pages of info out there on these carbs,and pagesof modifications and improvements too
but more can be found in Q Jet books published by a couple different authors, local library may have one possibly

but ive never used any manuals or books, i learned by grabbing tools and taking it apart, done tons of them now, most turn out fine, but some wont, and some have worn out throttle shaft bushings and require a press to replace them

if you dont then youll have a vacuum leak it wont run right if the shaft is sloppy

thanks man. i was also wondering how to lean it out... all the chilton told me was to leave it to a licensed professional. which screw would be the one i want?

As for a "screw" to lean it out - there isn't one. It's a feedback system, meaning it sets the mixture at a certain place, the O2 sensor sees what the result is, sends that info to the computer, the computer changes the mixture based on the sensor "feedback", etc., etc.

The typical causes of running too rich are: Bad O2 sensor (but not bad enough to set a trouble code); improperly functioning choke; leakage through the "well plugs" from the fuel bowl to the intake manifold; and ignition not up to par.

I just purchased a boat with a 90 Q jet on it (90 260HP 350 CI Mercruiser). I know theres no computer or anything but its in need of a rebuild big time. Would the diagrams I see here be there same - some computer components?
