PROBLEM with my edelbrock 1406 carb, my engine wont idle
Hey guys, I got a slight problem with my car. I get it to start but it will not stay at idle. At random times the car will jump up in RPM's and then bogg down to barely running. I will give the specs of my motor
350 bored .60 Over
Patriot Performance Freedom Series heads 2.02 / 1.60
MSD HEI Distributor, Cap, Rotor, and 8.5mm Wires
Accel Shorty Header Plugs Gapped to .45
Hooker Super Comp Shorty Headers
Edelbrock 600 CFM Carb 1406
Edelbrock RPM AIR GAP 2
Comp Cams Xterme Energy .507 / .510
Any other info needed just ask and ill post it.
Okay so here is what happened. My father rebuild my Edelbrock 600 CFM carb 2 days ago. its a 1406. bolted it onto the motor and got the motor to start and run. right now the timing on the motor is at 12 degrees TDC. the car will start up nice and after a few seconds of running it will idle down or the engine will race at 1500-1800 RPM's then die down again. this repeats over and over again and no matter what i do i have the same results.
I dont even need to touch the gas pedal and the car will fluctuate in RPM's. Anyways i have tried to adjust the carb set screws, timing, and the idle screw and i get no closer to solving this problem. sometimes i will get it to idle at 500 RPM's and as soon as i try and adjust the idle screw the motor will then race again then completely stall out.
I have the Vacuum Advanced port on the Passenger side of the Carb Blocked off and i have the Driver side port hooked up to my Distributor. The Choke i have totally disabled and loose enough so it does not effect the adjustments im making.
I also need help Adjusting the Electronic Choke, because it was never set properly.
is there something im doing wrong? this is now the third day in the row that i am unsuccessful in getting the car to run correctly and its pissing me off lol

Re: PROBLEM with my edelbrock 1406 carb, my engine wont idle
Did you have the motor running good before you rebuilt the carb or is this a fresh build?
I had a similar problem with my 83. My problem turned out to be poor fuel delivery because of a kinked fuel line and a clogged filter. The fuel was not delivering to the engine at a constant and caused the idle to jump anywhere between 500 and 1700 rpms, or it would just stall out. I would start with all of the easy solutions. Bypass your fuel filter and let it run for a bit before you rule it out. I had to take my maro around the block a few times before I could tell that this was my problem. And check your fuel pressure, if it's jumping around you've found a problem. Also, I would adjust your timing to something a little less radical than 12*. I know your motor build justifies this timing but it couldn't hurt to try somewhere closer to stock of 6*btdc.
Props on your motor build,
Chris

Anyways, The Motor was never ran before, it is brand new. i broke in the cam as much as possible with the carb the way it was. i have brand new everything, including new fuel filter and fuel lines. And yes i tried and bypassing the fuel filter and it still was the same results. I also have an inline pressure gauge and im at a constant 5psi. The Car will barely run at 6* of TDC so it needs to be at least 8-12, i plan on pulling everything apart and starting again from the beginning. carb is off allready and it is all in pieces. im gonna reset everything to factory specs with the manual and reclean out anything that is or looks like it would cause a problem.

Initial timing w/o vacuum advance should be in the 8-12 degrees BTDC range for starters. Personally, I prefer full-time vacuum advance (after setting the initial timing) to ported vacuum advance, which will put in even more advance at idle.

How do I set it as ported vacuum advance?? Would it be possible that my electronic choke isn't set properly and its re-engaging when I hit the throttle?

Fig 1 on pg 2. They refer to it as "timed vacuum". I would use manifold vacuum, as long as it doesn't cause other problems (which it shouldn't).
Can't rule it out until you check it out.

I figured out what was wrong with my Carb, it is too small for my motor and it is not calibrated correctly

Check for vacuum leaks, put a can of carb cleaner through it, the good kind though not the non-chlorinated kind. Could be some dirt in there. Anyways, good luck, but this is mostly a third-gen f body forum, so you're out of luck there. I know there has to be a forum for Chrysler A bodies.
