My set up-

89 camaro, has a 74 350 block (355), has a mild cam (unsure of what it is, just purchased the car a few months ago). Posi traction,exhaust, etc etc,

It currently has a 1406 carb on it, and the only adjustments is the idle mixture. When I stomp the gas, this thing just doesnt seem to go like it should. I can break the tires loose by popping the clutch but It can barelly keep them going through 1st gear. If I hammer the pedal, the engine starts to sound robbed of fuel, does a chugging sound. If I ease on the accelerator it can handle it.

Im not about fuel economy and from what I am understading thats the purpose of the 1406? According to the math, I think a 1406 is the proper CFM for my engine though, but would a 1407 be better?

Ignition timing - Where is it set? Have you checked it? Did you set it properly, the "old school" way? What distributor does it have to go with the EFI->carb swap? (BTW, the stock '89 timing setting is completely worthless to you now.)

Fuel delivery - How was this handled? Is the EFI in-tank electric pump still in the tank? If so, is it operating? Have you checked fuel pressure when it is acting up?

Carb tuning - There is more to carb tuning than the idle mixture and idle speed. The main & secondary rods & jets need to be tuned to your engine (and we can't tell you what they should be - it's dependent upon how the carb acts on your particular engine).

I have a 1405 on my setup no problems here. I think the only difference is the the 1406 is Calibrated 2% leaner than Edelbrock 1405 carb and the 1406 is electric choke. I can smoke my tires with my locking rear no problem.


What distributor do you have? Is the Vac advance hooked up? What heads are on the motor?

Is your posi unit slipping? How recently was the fluid changed? Whats your rear gear ratio?

Take your air cleaner off look into the carb how does it look? Varnish? Does it have the triangle edelbrock air cleaner? Any foam coming off it into the carb? Is the choke stuck? Are the secondaries opening smoothly?

Side note my friend had a 1407 on his mid 350 with a 490ish cam and world products SR heads with 1.94 valves and we cannot seem to get his low end to be studder free. I am guessing he has a bit too much carb.

I run a 1405 on my car, not an issue. i have to wonder about your timing too. How do your plugs look? Plug wires in good shape? Don't forget the springs for the metering rods. Too light and you dump too much fuel.
