How do you disassemble a water pump?

How do you disassemble a water pump?

Taking the rear cover off is easy enough. Then something needs to be pressed off (I think). Does the front hub press off of the shaft or the impeller press off of the other end?

Anyone done this before?

Pictures? Instructions? Anything would be helpful.

I have an aluminum one with a bad seal. I'm also switching to a serpentine belt setup, so I need a reverse rotation (RR) impeller. I have a stock RR, a high flow RR iron and a high flow standard rotation iron pump laying around.

I'm hoping to mix and match parts and finally wind up with an Aluminum RR pump.

So what is the procedure for pressing off the impellor? Pull the shaft out the other end and the impellor falls off? How would I set that up in a press?

I don't know if you could count on the parts being interchangeable between a stock cast iron pump and an aftermarket aluminum one. You could try getting a rebuild kit from the manufacturer of the aluminum one.

Tried, no luck. But I'm told that it uses the same bearings and seals as the high volume Chevy pumps. (1.5" OD IIRC). I have the idea that most high volume pumps are knock-offs of the chevy design and use similar parts.

The stock cast iron pump is really just for practice. Hopefully a little experience will prevent me from destroying the aluminum one. If I can get it apart and replace the seals/bearings, I try the impeller oput of the RR high flow that I have. If that doesn't fit I'll find some other RR impellor that will.

So back to my origional question. Anyone have any details on how to disassemble a water pump?

just change your battery cables..install neg on positive and positive on negative and now everything runs in reverse

They will trade it for the another of the same thing for 1/2 price. But that doesn't do me any good.

So has ANYONE EVER sucessfully rebuilt a water pump?

I tried once but I destroyed it. I tried to use a hammer and a punch. I got it most the way out but it binded at the end.

To use a press, you would have to have 2 long flat pieces of steel to put underneath the pulley (between the pulley and pump body)
then you need a punch smaller than the shaft that goes into the pulley. I used a push rod instead of a punch but a press might bend one of those. Also finding 2 pieces of flat strong steel can be difficult. Let us know how it works out.

No luck, no instructions and so far no time to work on it... But I'll post something when I get a chance to take the stuff apart.
