Newer Rearview Mirror Wiring Question

I've got a newer model GM rearview mirror. It has a light on the bottom on each side, and two rocker switches on the front for the "reading lamps" as they are labeled. On the back is the marking "Donnelly model 263.0" There are 4 wires coming out of the connector on the back. White, Black, Pink/Black, and Orange. Can any one provide the connections for this mirror? I assume it can be hooked up so that the lights both come on with the doors, and so that you can turn each of them on individually with the switches.

Engine: 305
Transmission: Richmond 6 Spd

White: Connect to door pin switch wire, which is grounded when a door is open.

Black: Chassis ground.

Orange: +12 Battery; connect to ACCY fuse.

Pink / Blk: Pink / black is usually +12 volts when ignition is turned on. The GM 4 wire mirrors have a gray wire as the 4th wire, which connects to a light in the mitrror that illuminates the console when the running lights are turned on (it takes the place of one of the two switches that are found in the GM 3 wire mirrors), so I'm not sure what the pink / black wire powers in your mirror - does it have auto dim?

Visit a junkyard and in the Luminas/Monte Carlos or 4th gen F-bodies...take about 2 feet of the rear view wire connection there

The mirror is not auto dim or compass or anything, just a normal manual mirror with two lights and two switches.

Tim, your wiring doesnt seem to match up, heres what i can decude so far. When i put +12 on orange, and ground on black, both lights light up independent of the switches... this would be the doors open mode. If I reverse the polatiry of the orange/black combo, both lights come on agian, independent of the switches.

I've tried all other possible permutations of the wiring, and have had nothign else happen. I cant seem to get it so that I can turn the lights on and off with the switches.

If i can figure out how to get the cover off this thing, I 'm going to take a look inside and try to reverse engineer it.

The mirror looks relatively new gm styling, I'd say like 95ish or newer. I've got a similar one in my 2000 s-10 (switches are just push button instead of rocker, so I might pull the harness to that one and see what i can find out.

Well I got the mirror open... and much to my surprise there is actually a small sitcuit board inside. I'm going to try to draw out the schematic so i can see what it does... Right now i can tell you there are about 15 surface mount resistors, and MC14011B chip, which is a logic gate chip whose identity escapes me at the moment, 4 transistors, and a couple other components which i cant identifiy. I still might go down and look at my truck's mirror.

Well, the truck mirror is a 3-wire setup, so no help there. I'm contemplating scrapping this little circuit board and just re-wiring the mirror as a three wire setup, but this is intreuging me now.

Well, I gave up on the circuit board cause I would have had to unsolder components to see where all the traces went. I just re-wired the mirror lights and switches to work as a three-wire setup. I got it installed and it works great. I'd still like to know what the function of that circuit board was. It seems like an awful lot of cost to just turn on the lights.

Thanks for the help tim.

The 3rd wire is to give you power when the doors are open or when you turn on the lights.
it will act as a ground when you open/turn on the door/lights

Interesting......A 4011 is a CMOS quad 2 input NAND gate. Are there any other transducers that the board is connected to - can you post a picture of the guts?

The board is connected only to the lights and switches in the mirror, but it was connected to the 4th wire on the connector. I'm thinking maybe GM used this same board for controlling a more advanced mirror with an auto dim or something, and they just used the same circuit board and left off the extra components. I'll see about posting a picture, but not promises... I'm going back to school next week and I'm pretty busy.

I wonder if it is one of the fading lights type mirrors that I believe are used in the 4th gen Camaros. When the lights are switched off they fade off instead of turning of instantaneously.

I thought the fading lights thing was some sort of RC circuit that dimmed all the lights in the car, not just the mirror lights. In my moms 96 silhouette all the lights dim off at the same rate.

Y have the same mirror, but my car have the same harness whit 2 diferent colors
Black, orange, gray and white/brown, the mirror only turn on when open the door and switch on interior lights, not turn on when switch on in the mirror
