12 volt impulse relay
Does anyone know where I can get a 12 volt DC impulse relay. I am planning on using it to control my torque converter operation; ON or OFF with the momentary switch in my shift handle, and always off with the brake switch.

Good luck. Post back if you find something. What you're locking for is called a by-stable latching relay. I was looking for a replacement for one use in a piece of high voltage equipment (weird French BS). Two coils, one toggles the contacts on-off, the other coil forces an off state. I can find ANYTHING like it. You best bet is building a little circuit to control your relay.

The idea is to control torque converter lockup clutch operation via ground on a non-ECM controlled drivetrain, so the momentary switch can turn it on or off and a brake application will always turn it off. I was told by a technician an avionics tech that an impulse relay will do the trick. But I am unable to locate one.

This could be done with about $25 worth of stuff, may not be the most efficient way, but it would work...
Get a lighted momentary switch.
Get a dei latching relay
Get a regular automotive relay
Wire the lighted momentary switch so that it lights up when the latching relay is active and off when not active... and your transmission turns on / off, simple enough...
Here is where it gets tricky... The second automotive relay has to be wired after the first, so it is only working when the latching is on... wire it to the brake pedal so when the brake pedal is pushed, the second relay sends a signal to the first latching relay to turn off. This second relay has to be wired correctly so that it only does this when the first relay is latched on, or your brake pedal will turn on / off the transmission. It has to be dependant on the first latching relay to be active for it to work.
Understand ?
Anyone feel free to chime in...

I believe this is what an impulse relay does. If I am unable to locate an impulse relay soon, then I will do as you have suggested. Thanks a lot for the info. I have quite a few of the automotive relays.

Check out http://store.summitracing.com/. B&M makes (BMM-70244) one for $156, Painless has one (PRF-60109) for $130, and the winner for the wallet, TCI has one (TCI-376600) for $80. As a tech I'm sure you under stand the importance of PROPER TCC operation. Seems like these are the way to go. Is there some reason these will not work in your app.? BTW, if the price is the kicker, when the relay I described was available it was $90 and change plus shipping (weird and expensive French BS).

Not yet, I looked at one yesterday which was a combination of a solenoid and two micro switches with an external mech to control the two switches. The engineer I spoke with suggested I use two common automotive Bosch type relays. Use one relay to be operated by the momentary (demand) switch and the other to be controlled by the brake switch and thus to control the first one. For the sake of discussion we will refer to these as relay A and relay B. I believe some sort of impulse relay already has this function designed into it. Locating one is proving to be a "quest"!
My original idea was to use only one relay and use the brake light filaments as ground for the coil, and the momentary switch to power the coil with a jumper wire to make the relay remain closed one it closed. Then when you push the brake pedal, the relay would have potential on both sides (no ground path), and open. The only problem with this design; is that the only way to turn off the converter would be to push the brake pedal which in some situations in not too good. I thought it sure would be nice to have a system whereby you could use the simple and unobtrusive momentary switch which is already mounted in the aluminum T handle of my B&M MegaShifter, to lock/unlock the converter. I may need to sit down this weekend and work out the wiring for the two realy system.
I do feel that once this issue has been resolved and posted, it will help many people in the future who might require non-ECM converter control.
I can fax a copy of the standard Bosch relay to someone if they know how to post it on this thread, I do not. PM me your fax# and I'll send it. I am sure their are members out there that are, way smarter than me on this stuff.

The DPDT magnetic latching relay I have purchased, and tested does not appear to work as I had hoped. I have a copy of the diagram if someone can figure out how to post it for me?
