does this mean the sender in the tank is gone?the gauge is always past full in the same spot,never moves.is there a way to test the sender?

idk about camaro's but in a fiero the way to test it is to short the gauge. if the gauge went to empty when you ground it out that means that it is the fuel sending unit and not the gauge, if the gauge does not go to empty and stays at full then your in luck and you just have to replace/repair the gauge instead of dropping the tank

the ground wire usually connects to the top of sending unit. there is a plug on the front side of the tank u could prolly use a test light with a hot mire dont know how safe it is but at least you would know if your getting ground.

my90bird, my 88 Iroc was doing the same thing after I topped off the tank. I thought I was going to have to pull the tank and replace the float assembly but before I did I hit a pot hole which must have jarred the float loose and it has worked fine for the past year. Maybe try tapping gently on the tank and if the gauge starts working don`t top off the tank. Worked for me. I hope you get lucky.

You can jack up the rear of the car, there's a connector (C313) right above forward of the differential. It has three wires: black, grey (or tan/white) and pink. The pink wire is your fuel sender wire. Unplug the connector. Use a paperclip to short the pink and black pins on the CAR side of the connector. Turn ignition on. If the gauge reads empty, it's good.

Correct.
The gauge should read full when disconnected (I failed to mention that, sorry) and should read empty when grounded. So if the gauge is good, you can then worry about the fuel float or its wire.
Process of elimination works the best here.

I've also noticed that if your gauge cluster happens to be loose and not making good connections the fuel hand will run all the way past full. Happened to me when I was changing clusters.

IS IT NECESSARY TO DROP THE TANK TO START FIXING THE FUEL GAUGE? THIS IS MY FIRST CAMARO AND I AM TRYING TO FIX IT SO I CAN START SHOWING IT.

Dowgard, after checking everything possible to fix my gas gauge after it started staying past full again I was ready to drop the tank and replace the float assembly. But first I got a spray can of electrical contact cleaner, removed the gauge, sprayed it liberally inside and out , cleaned the contacts, blew out the gauge innards with canned air(very low air pressure) and it has worked perfect since my last post about this problem. It`s easier than pulling the tank if it works for you.

I've got an 84 rs and the fuel gauge needle will sit straight up and down when the tank is full. As soon as I get past a half of a tank, the needle starts whipping around really fast when I brake hard or make a left turn (only left turns do this, didn't know whether this was relevant). When I'm almost empty, the gauge will read totally empty even though I still have about two gallons left. Based on this description, does it sound like it's the float in the tank?
