missing fuse? efi/fuel pump fuse?

so i posted here a few weeks ago asking for help/thoughts on why my GTA wouldn't start after sitting in storage for 6 months. it drove fine into storage, then it would only crank when i tried to start it last month.

well i got it up and running, but only because i rigged it. i have a jumper wire from my battery spliced into my power wire for the fuel pump relay because it wasn't getting power. but it clearly works now that it's rigged. my SES light also didn't come on before while the car wouldn't start, after i rigged it, it comes on when the key is in the on position like it's supposed to.

i've been told there is a fuel pump/efi fuse that is somewhere near the location of my battery, and that would be the cause of both of the issues i have. there is no fuse by my battery. i've looked and looked and looked. i work at a dealership in the shop, and i've had other mechanics look and they found nothing either. so would there be another location for this fuse? obviously it's somewhere because the car ran fine last year.

Re: missing fuse? efi/fuel pump fuse?

There should be a fuse on the pass side (usually were the battery is on v-8s). It should be in a fuse holder and have a orange wire. Should be a 20 or 25 amp fuse. Ill post up a pic when I get home since the harness is out of the car.

Re: missing fuse? efi/fuel pump fuse?

From the factory, it is attached to the fender kind of behind the battery. But over the years, it gets broken off the fender or the screw removed, and it's left dangling in that area. It's inside a weatherpack, with a tab on the side for the screwhole to attach to fender. It will have a red wire and a orange wire. The red usually comes from the power distribution block between battery and radiator.

Re: missing fuse? efi/fuel pump fuse?

I just read another thread that RBob answered that this fue was for ECM Power, not fuel pump relay. But I think the ECM has to have paower to trigger the fuel pump rely. It does on a 7747 ECM< I would think it's the same on other ECM...

Re: missing fuse? efi/fuel pump fuse?

I know on my car, when I pulled that fuse the only thing that dies was the pump...

Re: missing fuse? efi/fuel pump fuse?

Since you are at the dealer, you should havce access to very good wiring diagrams and locations. try using that resource if you still can't find the fuse. I'm not sure but I think some models and years may have used a fuselink instead of a fuse. Coerrect me if I'm wrong.

Re: missing fuse? efi/fuel pump fuse?

update:
ok i finally found it. it was just kinda hanging out in the engine bay. it's kinda sketchy though. pretty sure someone messed with it. i have a ground coming off of it and going directly to the battery. and from the picture it doesn't look like it's supposed to be like that. i have a picture, not a very good one, but it's shitty outside and don't feel like going out there now, but you can still the the mess. i have the fuse/wires outlined on the left in red:

Re: missing fuse? efi/fuel pump fuse?

Does it have the fuse in it? Is it blown? There shouldn't be any ground - it's a straight 12v+ connection from battery to OPSU. Should have red wire from power dist center to the fuse, then orange out of fuse to the OPSU/ECM - NO GROUND.

Re: missing fuse? efi/fuel pump fuse?

there was a 20a fuse in it and it was blown. but i believe it's because i'm jumping over that connection with direct power to the relay from the battery. i put a new fuse in quick to see what would happen and also left the jumper wire connected and it sparked and clicked the relay. unhooked the jumper wire, left the new fuse in and tried to start it, back to no power to the pump. checked the fuse, wasn't blown.

Re: missing fuse? efi/fuel pump fuse?

If there was a ground on it then someone def messed with it at some point. Like newbie said, its supposed to be 12v running from the battery into the fuse, but I always thought the orange wire ran straight to the relay for the constant 12v power source. Atleast thats how mine was and I kept it that way when I swapped in the carbed 389 .

Re: missing fuse? efi/fuel pump fuse?

ugh damn it. i hate when people mess with stuff that don't know what they are doing. this car is a wiring cluster **** and didn't know what i was getting myself into when i bought it. oh well. that's part of the fun i guess.... anybody have a good picture of the full wire routed or maybe a diagram of it?

Re: missing fuse? efi/fuel pump fuse?

Im sorry you haven't received a response to your request for routing or wiring diagram. I am hoping to put together a library of diagrams over time. At this time I do not know of any diagrams on this or any other site for the 89TA. My best advice, especially if you're doing extensive work on this car is to purchase the Factory Service Manual and Electrical Diagnostic Suppliment from Helms Publishing. It's a bit pricey but well worth it for anyone serious about caring for their own car.

Re: missing fuse? efi/fuel pump fuse?

another update:
i am currently working on this, took a break to come on here because yet again, i am stumped.
Name: Photo0147.jpg
Views: 1517
Size: 40.4 KB
this black wire in my hand was what was connected to my fuse and on the other side was the orange wire. like this Name: TransAmBatt2outline.jpg
Views: 1548
Size: 61.0 KB
found an orange wire that had been cut and put electrical tape over the top and figured it belongs with the fuse, and not the black wire.Name: Photo0146.jpg
Views: 2367
Size: 59.4 KB like that. but looking again at the above pictures, it's a red and orange wire, and both my wires are orange.

anyways, that didn't do anything. i just put electrical tape around the connection to be sure it would work before i used a connector. i traced the 2 wires all the way back and didn't find any breaks or anything that would cause an issue. i'm stumped. anybody have a good wiring diagram of this?

and now that i think about it, because i disconnected my battery for the winter, and hooked it up 6 months later, i forgot how everything got connected. even though that wire is black and i automatically thought of ground, but i bet it was connected to power last year, hence why it worked fine last year, and didn't start this year. nonetheless, it's still rigged up either way, and i wanna fix it.

You can find diagrams at austinthirdgen.org or eaglemarkforums. I would post a link if I knew how but, sorry.
