No, you can't use the factory's bizarre roller nightmare in anything but a block that's set up fot it. I know of no way to put that crap in an older block at all, because there are things missing that would be required.

However... for all the decades that the rest of us had been building roller motors before the factories "discovered" the idea, we've been using regular old blocks with no modifications whatsoever. Comp, Lunati, Crane, Ultradyne, etc. all make the parts necessary to do this. I drove a totally unmodified 73 model 400 block with Comp roller cam, lifters, timing chain, and rockers to work this morning, so I know it can be done and how to do it.

So, you can't use your 89 305 stuff, but you can get a package that will work in any block you might happen to have. Check the web pages of the companies I mentioned for inspiration.

I'm going through this same thing right now. I've found that 87-89 chevy V-8s crack in the lifter valley, so I won't touch another one. All passenger cars had roller cams from 87-up. All trucks had the flat cams, but some had provisions for the roller cams. When I say "provisions" I mean that they had the little "stubs" in the casting to mount the spider. They also have the tops of the lifter bores machined flat.

That is what I am looking for, an 90-up 350 w/ provisions for roller cam. I want to use the factory style lifters so I don't have to spend the cheese for the retrofit lifters.

Like I said earlier, I won't put any money in a 87-89 chevy V-8. I've had two crack in my car alone. The original 305 had a crack on both sides of the lifter valley, about 8" on one side and about 3" on the other. I bought a 88 350 out of a Camaro, overhauled it, and installed it. 3 years later, I pulled the intake off to do a cam/intake upgrade and guess what I found!!! It is a shame.

Stan:

Cracks along the lifter valley, especially from front to rear about an inch or an inch and a half above the lfiters, are almost always the result of freezing.

Too many people have these things without that problem. If you have had 2 do it to you, there's something in common, and it isn't the motors.

Factory roller lifters don't cost that much different from properly designed ones. Of course if you can come up with a block already completely equipped with that stuff, that's fine; but if you have a block without those provisions, like jer has, you'd need to use the original design roller system in it.

AND BTW, not all passenger cars had rolller cams from 87-up. One of my brothers had a 87 Monte Carlo SS with the L69, it turned out to be flat tappet.

From what I've heard (have to admit haven't seen it personnally), the block casting has the nubs there for the lifter spider and cam retainer. You'd have to have them machined for a flat face, drilled and tapped. By the time you do that, you could probably buy RB's retrofit rollers.
