Re: Big Block Sound..
Brandon, when you say, "choppy" I assume your refering to the cam's lopey' idle sound. If thats what you mean, then yes. Sure, you can get the same "choppy" sound out of most any size sbc. Choosing a cam with a small lsa(lobe seperation angle) would produce a "choppy" sound but thats not the way to choose a camshaft. Try looking into Lunati"s Thumper series cam's, thats probaly the way to go.

True a Chevy Produced 396 is a Big Block, but I think he was refering to a bored and stroked sbc.

First, let's address the premise: Where did you get it in your head that big blocks have a choppy idle sound? My '66 396 BBC had as smooth of an idle as my 283 when both were stock.
Next, what are you really after? Just the sound? Don't care how it runs or drives?
If that's the case, look into the Comp "Thumper" series of cams. That's what they're all about.
FWIW, my son just picked up a 2001 Blazer with an LS1 swapped into it. The aftermarket cam they put in it has as choppy and mean sounding an idle as the 396 BBC with XS282S solid lifter cam in the '57 did. (We're hoping we can get it tuned so it sounds and runs better. )

Re: Big Block Sound..
My 454 SS pickup truck has a nice rumble because of the dual Hooker Aerochamber mufflers on it but I wouldn't call it choppy. It has a computer friendly camshaft in it and I still get a lot of compliments on the sound. I can't sneak up on anyone.
My race car is very loud without mufflers but I run Magnaflow race mufflers on it and it still isn't choppy. Spectators have told me it sounds real good going down the track.
It all depends on the valve grind. If you want a cam that gives you a "rump rump" sound, don't expect it to have good street manners. Cams like that also need higher stall converters.

Re: Big Block Sound..
Sure!!
Get a cam in the 240-250@.050 duration (I/E),Dish pistons and stock 781 heads,Dont put any advance on the timing and rock on!!
Its so choppy that you might want to put a bit more advance on it just to keep it running

Re: Big Block Sound..
I think what you're after is the thunderous sound that shakes your chest, right? You don't want the crisp snappy noise. You want the kind of deep rumble that pulses through your body if you stand close to the car.
You want this kind of sound....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yo_dCG0-S8w
That sound is rare in a street car. I've stood next to that car when it idles and it shakes your body. What I can tell you is it is a fairly high compression stroker LS engine with long tube headers and a Magnaflow premium catback system. My 2000 Camaro 6.0L has a similar rumpy idle (MS3 cam) with mild 10:1 compression and a cheap Hooker catback system and the sound is snappy raspy. However, I'll bet if I just put on the Magnaflow it would be a much deeper rumble. Exhaust makes a lot of difference.

Re: Big Block Sound..
You just can't tell with video. It doesn't ever sound the same in real person. If I had to guess I would say, no. Those engines sound like a small block and don't have the big bore engine rumble. They have the right idle quality, but not the deep tone.
My suggestion is to go to a car show or drag strip when the weather warms up. Find 5 cars with the sound you like and find out from the owners what the build is like. One of those five will be similar to something you might be willing to do. There are a lot of combinations that will do the job. You just need to find one similar to what you can replicate with your parts. Remember, your car is a single exhaust. You need to focus on 3rd and 4th gen cars with single exhaust.

Re: Big Block Sound..
A big cube LS swap will be very expensive. You'll have $10K in the engine alone.
I have a supercharged 454 (468 actually) sitting in my Firebird right now. I am pulling it to go a different direction. I have custom made Lemons headers, March serpentine pulleys and brackets, and other stuff. If you want to go big block it would be cheaper to buy my setup for yourself. Let me know if you're interested. I'm in central Illinois. It will make a hell of a lot more power than a 396. I never finished it. The cam still needs to be broken in first time you start it (Crower supercharger cam).

If you want to learn, you can always disassemble my engine and put it back together.

It takes more than just an over-bore to get 496 cu. in, you need a 4.25 stroke crank also.
