305 tpi to carbed 350

I have a 1985 iroc with the 305 tpi. a buddy has a chevelle with a built 350 carbed that he wants to sell me. 4 bolt, 1 piece rms, forged pistons. says the dyno was at 325hp. my tpi is bone stock. should i do the swap? i know many guys on here love the tpi for tuninng purposes, but i am more of a NON-computer guy, and would rather the 350 carbed. what are the pros and cons? I look at it that i would have to put in some nice coin to make my 305 make 325 hp at the wheels....help!

Re: 305 tpi to carbed 350

I did the same swap on my car, which is an 85 Iroc. The carb over the Tuned Port is much better in my opinion. When I dropped the 350 in my car which is making just around 310 at the flywheel the car got more driveable in my opinion. Honestly i can say that I am getting better gas mileage with the carb over the tpi. It was worth the work into it. you'll be much happier with a 350

Like i said this 350 is a worked motor, and my car will def boogie if I get it. I have the complete suspension done as well, and am dying to see how well it handles with some real power.

I just wanted to hear some pro-tpi comments, if applicable.

What is the estimated cost of swapping a 350 into a 1988 Iroc 305 with a 5-speed transmission?

Re: 305 tpi to carbed 350

Personally I think the TPI is junk lol. To have my enigine that I used for my car cost $1200 to build. This included, comp cam, crank, (used stock pistons and rods), all new bearings(crank and cam), high rise intake(used), brand new pioneer flywheel, and the basics. The motor i used was out of a 90 silverado 20,000 original miles (totaled lol). Like I said its dyno 310 at flywheel. Also had to buy an inline fuel pump for $50. Over all i maybe spent $1400 when all was done.

Dunno if some members here will appreciate that comment. The TPI is a work of art actually and has many possibilities to make some power. MY issue is that I only have the 305. This is why i posted this thread. i wanna hear from experienced TPI guys, if I should stay or go!

Re: 305 tpi to carbed 350

Honestly your going to put alot of money into just converting it over to tpi. You'll have to get the intake, injectors, probable a new harness and computer since it had a 305 the computers going to send a low amount of "burst" to the injectors not to mention the hassell with the emissions your check engine light will always be on. Its just alot simpler and its not like a carburetor is a real step down, NASCAR just switched to EFI so you can get great performance out of it if its well tuned. But if your willing to go thru it all and spend the money...then more power to you. Just my opinion

Re: 305 tpi to carbed 350

You can can run the 350 with the 305 computer... it's been proven. I say do the swap. but leave the factory wiring in place so when you get tired of drivabilty issues with the carb you can RTS. you dont need to get a pump just get a pressure regulator with a return. just saw a thread on a pretty slick setup using a mallory...search is your friend!!! There is no uncharted territory on these cars. I say run the carb until you get sick of it and put the TPI back on with the proper size injectors and you'll never go back.
