My friend has one on his 87 IROC w/ an L98. The 80 series mufflers are 3 chamber, the 40 series are 2 chamber. His car has that metallic, tinny sound that make it sound as if it were coughing up a lung, but that's mostly because he has a gutted cat. It would probably sound OK with a cat on there. The 40 series are louder and deeper sounding than the 80 series. When most people say they have a 'Flowmaster muffler' on their thirdgen, an 80 series dual outlet muffler is usually what they have. IMO, a 3 chamber muffler with a stock, small intermediate pipe sounds crappy, and terrible with a gutted cat.

The 80 series crossflow Flowmaster is one of the loudest mufflers Flowmaster makes. The 40 series is about the same in loudness levels but the tone is a bit different. I have the 80 series (P.N. 43083) on my car and with no converter it is quite loud. Once I put the headers on I figure I will have to change my muffler for the noise to be tolerable. A 40 series Delta Flow is quiter, especially in the interior of the car but would still have considerable "bark" outside the car. If in doubt call the Flowmaster technical assistance line. They are very knowledgable and helpfull and will help find the muffler that is best for you and your car. The tech line number is 1-800-544-4761
P.S. The 80 series is NOT a 3-chamber. It is a unique design exclusive to the 80 series crossflow muffler. The 40 series is a single in single out configuration.

Well The Rock says: "IT DOES'NT MATTER HOW MANY CHAMBERS IT HAS!!!"
Actually it really does not matter. Flowmaster has abandoned the method of identifying their mufflers as 2 or 3 or however many chambers. In reality if you look at the design of the 50 series (formerly known as the 3-chamber) there are 4 major sections or "chambers" and they have internal deflectors and baffels that seperate them. The 30 series also has 4 major sections, but the design is different, so the sound and the way the muffler works is different.
Anyway, the 40 series was the 2-chamber, the 50 series was the 3-chamber, some of the flowmaster race mufflers are still identified as one or two or three chamber and the 80 series crossflow is completely different from the 40 and 50 series so telling you how many chambers it has does'nt do you any good.
Call flowmaster or visit www.flowmastermufflers.com there you will find the answers.

I have the 80 series on my L98 GTA and with no cat and 3" straight pipe it is very loud!! At normal idle speeds, in other words normal driving around town, the sound is sometimes questionable as to whether I like it or not?? But at WOT it sounds loud, mean, and powerful. And what a difference it made in throttle response, especially with the cat gone! Good luck.

88 I heard putting a High-Flow converter on will make it sound better, I don't know how, just what I heard, not what I know.
When I get the IROC 350, I want it to be loud and powerful sounding at all times, idle, WOT, everything.

Looking for:
87 IROC-Z L98
84 TRANS AM H.O.

OK.. here is my sugestion.. why dont you guys list the PART NUMBER YOU HAVE!!!! The one on my 91 is the 42583. It has the 2.5 in and dual 2.5 out. Stock cats,,,sounds good ..little louder than my gm muffler from 2 yrs ago. It sounds great when you get on it and isnt obnoxious like most flowmasters, suprisingly. And YES gutting the cat wil make it a lot louder and improve the sound if that is the direction you would like to go. Just my opinion.

I have the 43083 on my car. The only differene between the 42583 and the 43083 is the size if the inlet pipe diameter. 42583 = 2.5" 43083 = 3" Both mufflers have dual 2.5" outlets on opposite sides and they are internaly identical.
