straight pipes question?

ok i want to run straight pipes on a 89' trans am gta but my dad says the sensors in the exhaust will get messed up and will mess up the computer i want to run straight back from the stock cat and it will split off at the end so it has dual outlet. I dont really want straight pipes but my guy that works at a muffler shop will do it as a side job for reallllllllyyyyyyy cheap. So will it mess up the computer if i do this? how loud are they if i have a stock 350 tpi stock everything bascially will the noise be to loud to hold a conversation in the car? Will it actually sound good? I like the way my stock one sounds now with that low rumble and everything i just want it louder? But the basic question is if i run straights will i have to program the computer, if i do how do i do it, and if i have to take it to the shop to get programed how much will it cost you think. Just remeber im only 16 and dont think i can do much programming my self unless its really simple im not illerate about cars i can change my own plugs and oil. I even installed my own sound system that half tail works but programming a computer just the name sounds difficult to me. Thanks a lot

Are you going to run the pipes over the rear end? That might not make it as loud. As far as I know all the sensors are before the CAT. So I don't think it will matter much to the computer. But I'm not for sure on that. I know I had a problem with getting an EGR code when I put a more free flowing exhaust on my car. Also, If he is doing this real cheap the pipe he may be using is real cheap. I had someone give me a good deal on some exhuast work once and in less that 2 years I had to get it replaced because it rusted away to nothing. I would just buy a good performace CAT back system. Think you would be happier with that then just running straight pipes.

On a 3rdgen F-body, the only sensor in the exhaust system is the O2 sensor in the drivers side exhaust manifold/header.

Now, if its a 4thgen, or your've done an LT1 or LS1 swap, thats a different story...

Straight pipes are gonna be loud. Have you ever heard an engine without a muffler? Might want to find one before you spend the money on the strainght pipes.
You wont have to reprogram the computer. The flow just wont be increased enough to run the engine outside the ecm parameters.
Also have you thought about what a cop magnet a 16 yo in a firebird with straight pipes would be. Just a thought.

Your cat is going to help quiet the car A LITTLE BIT. Try this. Run the exhaust as you said right up to the point where the muffler would normally go. Start the car and go for a drive. How does it sound. By adding the dual tails you spoke of you aren't going to change the sound any. If you like the sound then finish as you spoke of. If not, then its time to add some sort of muffling device in this spot. You're cat will cause enough restriction for the o2 to get a reading providing the o2 is in good condition. If its dirty then you may get a code at highway speeds as the dirty o2 won't get an accurate reading.

I put a straight pipe after the cat and it sounds sweet. It isnt extremely loud but I dont think I would want it much louder.

I had flowmaster 40 series on my 2.8 with no cat and that thing was loud for the street, I couldnt imagine how loud a V8 with stright pipes would be compared to other cars on the road. Oh yeah... No mufflers = tickets

Re: straight pipes question?

1. It won't "mess up" any sensors or throw off tuning.
2. Cheap job = poor quality parts 9 out of 10 times. Get ready to replace it in a few years if your car ever sees the winter.
3. You won't be able to talk inside the car, you'll probably have your ears ringing too.
4. It won't sound good by many people's standards, but everyone is different. Sounds very "poppy". It doesn't sound like a louder version of a car that has mufflers.
5. If you had to program a computer (you won't) but if you did you're looking at alot of money becuase not many people do it, let alone do it properly.
6. You're asking for trouble from police. Loud, fast car plus cops means you're either more likely to be caught doing something stupid, or you're going to get alot of tickets for being too loud.

You'll see alot of kids post here asking about "loudest cheapest" sound and whatnot, and most of us have been around long enough to realize loud cars are annoying to drive and they often sound BAD or broken.

It will make it sound like 70% of the pickups on the road. I ran a no muffler or cat full exh system for a year. Sounded nice.

this girl i know has a 88 iroc w/ 305tpi and 5spd and when she got it and to this day has the same of what you are wanting just comes back from cat over rear and splits into to pipes and no muffler. IMO its just loud and bad sounding sounds too much like a truck but also he car is constintily out of tune so that doesnt help either. ive got a flowaster 80 series catback on my TA but it will not be on much longer since once i get the cash everything will be swaped out for set of LTs and something more free flowing. do what you want may be cheap and loud but trust me it does get old b4 i got my catback me and a buddy of mine gutted my old cat and removed the I pipe and muffler and i ran it like that for about a month and it was fun at first but i got old fast!
