Okay so we know majority of people LOVE there third gens LOUD MEAN and TOUGH. And theres TONS of options to choose from as far as performance and just plain "sound" goes.
My question is, whats the loudest you can go, for the cheapest???
80 series flowmaster??
SLP Loudmouth??
What do you suggest??

I have an 80 Series flowmaster on my GTA, and to be honest I dont really like it. Yes their was a slight power improvement (only felt by track times) however above 3k rpm it just sounds ugly...and not in a good way. But now to be fair im not really pushing alot of air out of it haha. But the drone is annoying and I liked the stock mufflers tone MUCH better.

So IMO a Flowmaster 80 is a thumbs down

okay i can respect that, but what do you mean after 3k is sounds ugly. like to loud or just sounds all around bad?
maybe it would be good for me? since im not into performance, just the loud messy sound.

Welcome to TGO, theres plenty of threads talking about the same thing. Try using the search feature.

However, you will find out just like most people, that CHEAP and LOUD go hand in hand. Doesnt take much effort to not make a difference to existing sound.

EXPENSIVE or atleast (not cheap) and QUIET also go hand in hand, because its very difficult to design a muffler that quiets down an exhaust, but some how keep the sounds you dont wanna lose.

Loudest for cheapest? =====> Cut your mufflers off, and call it a day. = $0
Loudest for next cheapest?==> Buy some glasspack cherrybomb mufflers.=$20ish ea.


However, after you get a few tickets, you will probably wanna go a little quieter.

Id recommend dynomax, as they are well known for their flow patents. They can be very quiet, and very loud, and sacrifice very little power. You might like Ultra Flow, or X flow, or something along those lines.

dynomax sounds lout yea, but the ultraflows sound like CRAP! they are just noisy, no actual deep throaty loud engine noise. i switched from an ultraflow, to a spintech pro-shootout, and its LOUD and suonds great, and is 90 or 120 for the muffler, put it in place of the stock one, and only have one tip/dump on the drivers side in stead of two tips, and you good to go

Loud accomplishes nothing worthwhile.

A well-designed quiet muffler can easily out-perform a loud, cheap muffler. I've known that since the late 70's when I replaced the Cherry Bomb glass pack header mufflers on the '57 with some simple "turbo" mufflers. Quieter, ran better. Repeated this spring with the Camaro when a 3" in/out Magnaflow replaced the 80-series.

There's a lot to be said for not being obnoxious.

Quiet, mean and tough - that's a worthy goal. There's nothing sadder than a loud, slow, sloppy 3rd gen (and there are plenty of them out there).

well being the kid i am, im not really into performance all that much.
i would love to go down the strip with a built up car. but being a high school student, id just like to intimidate any imports i run across. im barely getting my license and dont really plan on racing anytime soon. thanks for the advise though, defiantly something ill take into consideration when im older, and building a beast for the strip.

No, that is great advice. The Hooker 2055 (I think that's the one) is one of the best shorty headers on the market for our cars. I think if your gonna change something, save up and do everything at once. So, instead of getting just mufflers, save up until you can afford at least the full cat-back.

I think only 1 person on this site has it but you should look into the Pypes Violater Muffler...If i were to switch out my muffler right now I'd probably give that one a shot....

They make a crossflow model for our cars. Apparently its a very loud and aggressive muffler that flows great and comes with a polished exterior. I dont know how much the muffler costs but I would imagine that its not any different price-wise than a magnaflow, dynomax, borla, hooker or flowmaster.

Ive said this before on the borla post but ill just repeat my self

I put a Goerlich Xlerator muffler on my 92 3.1 and it made it sound like a v8. And i'm not joking i have people ask me if i put in a 350. It has that sound of blub blub blub blub blub at idle and when you rev it you have that nice cracking sound. But it doesn't sound like you have those mosquito mufflers that they put on those ford escorts

I have an escort and it sounds pretty dang good! But anyway, I have a flowmaster super 40 series and was wondering why everyone is baggin on em. maybe its just the loyalist inside of me that screams: "Flowmaster is the best!!!"

A muffler only replacement is useless to me. You're taking the stuff apart, it's not that hard to hook up a 3" intermediate pipe. So I always recommend a full catback.

Single vs dual tailpipes. All personal preference. I prefer dual myself.

Hooker and Dynomax are both fairly cheap to buy. Both are easy on the ears at idle (quiet) and surprisingly loud when you get on it.

I used to have the Flowmaster 80 series. 1 dimensional. Loud all the time. Aggresive idle. But you get bored with it after a couple of years. SLP Loudmouth....not a fan of it. Yes, it's the loudest system out there. It sounds somewhat decent with a stock exhaust. When when you add headers and/or ditch the cat, then it becomes an annoying tin can exhaust. Sounds cheap and hacked to me. The Flowmaster at least has some baffles to tame the sound.

i can tell you from past experience that loud only attracts thwe wrong people. only the people that dont know anything about cars think that loud is fast.... which is usually not the case.
my car runs low 10's and sounds like a stock car with a cam and a catback.
if you want it loud and cheap..... dynomax bullets.
loud and deep, spend a few extra bucks and get a 1 chamber flowmaster.

dynomax ultra flow and hooker are going to be WAY TO QUIET for what you are trying to achieve.

thanks for the feed back! my new firebird has no muffler at all, it must have fallen off before i got it. but the whole system is shot, i think im just gonna save up for the dynomax cat back (dual) i know its not the best or loudest but i think its gonna sound alot better than what i got goin on now. haha. oh yeah also you'd think that no muffler whould be loud but its not loud at all. or at least on my 305 tbi maybe it would be louder if i actually had a 350.

if you wanna go loud and cheap get a cutout. around $20-30 from summit. im in the process of redoing the exhaust on my 82 to make it quieter!!! i got a used stock ls1 catback muffler tails tips overaxle and I pipe for $40 going to be building a custom y into a 3.5in I pipe with cutout before axle then 3in into the stock ls1 muffler. less than 120 total

im running the hedman full length headers s-extensions and moroso spirall flos 2.5 inches on my 406 sb very inexpensive exhaust but sounds very good

My Hooker 1 3/4" super competition long tubes, with hedman s-bends, a summit h-pipe and 2.5" duals, and pipes and dumps right at the axle. My whole exhaust cost me $677.98 minus shipping.

i just bought a walker dual muffler and new tail pipes for $50 from an auto parts store. i would like to get a flowmaster eventually. i only bought it because it was needed to pass inspection. i still intend on buying the cat back pipe. i havent put i on yet because im in the process of getting it put on the road hopefully before the weekend.

my question is, has any one ever had one of these and do they suck or not. i not sure if its a factory style replacement like i said its a cheap fix for inspection.

a ultraflow is anything but noisy. i had a spintech on the car and it came off!
not as roaring inside like a 80 series flowmaster, but still loud for my tastes.
a dynomax ultraflow is about as quiet as it gets.
