What is the best substance to use to bond plastic to metal? Something that will create a strong permanent bond.

reguardless of what you're doing i'd sure look at soem mechanical means of doing it, along with a bonding agent.

You can try using a 2-part epoxy. Most are also sandable if you want/need a clean finish.

JB Weld is a two part epoxy, right?

Not sure exactly what I'm doing yet, just getting ideas.

Yes JB weld will pretty much bond anything together, when I was kid, a buddy of mine and I used to JB weld coins to the sidewalk outside his house...Funny when the darn things wouldn't come off for the people that noticed them walking by. I'll have to give him a call and find out if there are any still stuck the concrete..lol

I’ve used mechanical fastners + JB weld + gorilla hair to bond a scoop into a hood before… it looked good for a while till it cracked around the edges. Of course, I did drive the car through a split rail fence, that may have had something to do with it (I was never sure when exactly it started cracking, but would like to do another hood that way so I wish I knew)

I suspect that if I was going to try it again I’d probably do it a little different. JB weld, then a layer of ‘glass/resin to make for a solid piece over the seam, then something like bondo glass and bondo to blend it out.

take a block of plastic and melt it with a pencil torch and let its set in the crevice or between the 2 compounds and that would hold it and you could sand it too.

The auto body guys are using this new stuff now that I can't think of the name of. But if you go to the auto paint store they will sell it to you. Just explain to them what you want. This is the stuff that is so strong that you can glue metal to metal and if you pull it apart the metal will tear instead of the seam that was glued. I have a friend in the body shop business that uses it to put in quarter panels instead of welding it all the way around. Saves time and doesn't warp the metal like a welder will do. This will bond any material to any material from what I understand.

i have been reading up articles on this subject for my cowl scoop project and it seems the best results come from bare metal, 2 layers of fiberglass, then the plastic part, put another layer on the edge of the part and the hood, then bondo it smooth. granted it still might crack but that is the best method i have researched.

I would also like to know what that "new" stuff is. I think our cars would benefit greatly if the seams from the front bumper and ground effects to the fender were eliminated. Just my opinion but I think it'd give it a more sleek look.
