swivel seats?

Anyone ever done swivel seats? I think the seats would have to shift outward though or something before/during the time they swivel. I saw an older Grand Prix like 70s with swivel seats at a car show last year.

Re: swivel seats?

I think they were somewhat common in Olds', like 442's. You could probably modify some swivel seat tracks to fit in a third gen.

Re: swivel seats?

Starting in around 73 lots of GM Colonade style cars (442, chevelle, gp....) had the swivel seats. Not saying it couldnt be done in a camaro or a firebird but you are limited by the space of the center console in relation to the seat. Those were much bigger cars than our third gens. And the seats were rounded at the back if i remember correctly to allow clearance for when they swiveled.

There isn't much to say. Third gen a-body (73-77) cars came with them from GM. Lemans, Monte Carlos, Chevelle, Malibu, El Camino, Cutlass, Can-Am, and Century.

Some people will argue that the Monte isn' t an A-Body, but all the parts interchange with the above cars mentioned. I don't believe Monte actually used the g-body platform until the 80's, at which point the a-body became a front wheel drive platform.

They sat on a little pedestal and swiveled around. The idea was you could swivel 90 degrees and get in and out of your car instead of having to slide your legs under the steering wheel as you sat down.

They stopped making them. While I've never sat in one personally, I would imagine they had a tendency to move a bit while driving and were deemed unsafe or something silly like that.

A swap would simply involve welding in some steel to support the seats front and back, although if they're close to the same dimensions as a third gen seat that would be unnecessary.. after that, depending on whether it uses studs or bolts into the floor, you'd probably have to cut the studs from the third gen seat locations and weld in new ones or drill some holes and weld in some nuts.

I would use at least a 4" X 4" plate around the area to help spread the load. Somewhere between 16 gauge and 10 gauge.

Re: swivel seats?

My buddy has a pair of these in his 83 LeSabre that he got out of a 74 Laguna. They strait out suck, they wobble too much and putting them in a thirdgen would lift them up to high from what it looks like.

Re: swivel seats?

Captains chairs...

Im gonna go ahead and say its probably not gonig to happen in a thirdgen. I know atleast with my seat, if I tried to swivel my seat, the back would just hit the console. Unless you sit with the seat back straight up. Also, like someone else mentioned, it'll mean more height, which we really dont have to spare.

I will say... I drove an old mopar awhile back, and it had the seats. They felt fine. It was the cable operated version that would swivel automatically when you opened the door. If you were sitting in the seat, you could force it to swivel while driving, but you had to try. Otherwise, I couldnt tell any difference.

Neat idea...just not practical in my opinion.

Re: swivel seats?

Here's a better shot of how this concept works. These are from a Monte:
