Mecham Racing MSE For Sale

My wife and I are trying to straighten out bills so we're selling all the toys. I've got a 1982 Motor Sports Edition Trans Am for sale. #53-R The odometer currently reads about 73,000 miles. It had 67,000 when I got it. The previous owner stated it was actual mileage. He had owned it since 1985. The paint was faded badly, and there were a few dents. I scuffed it down and had a buddy of mine throw on a paintjob. That was 4 years ago and the car sits in the weather all the time. I don't have a garage. The paint has held up nicely but needs some touch-up. The interior shows like it should for the mileage. The engine and trans work fine but the carb is in dire need of a rebuild. I have the kit for it. It's perfectly driveable as is, as long as you are light on the throttle. The headliner is falling, the Recaro seats have been recovered but not correctly. A local shop quoted $200 to do the headliner, visors, sail panels, and fix the seats correctly. The car has all the Talon Suspension goodies. Koni adjustable shocks(which need rebuilt or replaced), bigger swaybars, lowered springs, poly bushings, extra front stiffening brace, strap limiters, and 3:73 posi rear. And of course the MSE correct 170mph speedo, steering wheel, emblems, spoiler, etc. The original sales price of this MSE was $16,990. I'm making it sound worse than it actually is, just want everyone to know the car needs a little work. Asking $6500 OBO. Located in Mountain Home, AR (North Central AR). This is the only pic I have on this computer. If you search this site you'll find some more. I will send pics to serious buyers, Thanks.

Re: Mecham Racing MSE For Sale

Nope, bought it in California and drove it about 2000 miles home. Part of that trip while on Route 66 we ended up running with the Hot Rod Power Tour! That was kind of cool but also embarassing. The car ran great but the California sun had taken it's toll on the original paint. It really looked like a beater! And several guys driving by were actually taking pics of my car! It was a very interesting trip home.

Re: Mecham Racing MSE For Sale

Your car looks great. But you may have an 83 and not an 82. I have a 1982 MSE # 70. White with black along the bottom. The color scheme that I see in you photo was called War Paint. and showed up in 1983 along with the SCC decal that is on the sail panel. Mecham won the SCC race in 1982. The console number should state the car year, mine shows 82 070. I thank the number you talk about is a reproduction 59R and not the orginal tag. Check the vin #. the 10th # should be a C for 82 and D for 83. I have collect a number of articles on these cars. Please don't take this information wrong.
Good luck on selling your car.

Oh ok,Cause I saw one for sale JUST like yours with 65K something miles a few years back in Oklahoma,Car was 35 miles away from me but could never find time to go out a take peak.
But a 2000 miles roadtrip sounds pretty sweet in a MSE

Re: Mecham Racing MSE For Sale

The car was built late '82 and has an '82 VIN and title. I'm not sure when it got the MSE treatment but the '83 style paint is original to the car. The number on mine is 82-0053R. I heard from somebody at one point the "R" was for red, as only 9 or so red ones were converted in '82. I can't verify that info. Serial number and price are confirmed by the original paperwork (what's left of it) that came with the car. I also have a correct Escort radar detecter for it too! I wish there was some more detailed information available for these cars. I spoke with Dennis Mecham himself after I got the car. Mine was one of very few that were actually ordered without the "Git Kit". Most people assume all of them came with it. People also assume red cars didn't get any suspension upgrades. Mine has the Talon Suspension package. Mine also has Recaro seats, installed by Mecham, not oem.

Re: Mecham Racing MSE For Sale

Surely somebody has some money! OK I'll sweeten the deal. I'll throw in my project. A 1983 Daytona 500 hardtop. YES HARDTOP!! 1 of about 153 built! It is a complete car with some rust issues, and motor problems. It deserves a total restoration. The seats have been redone in cloth, and the rest of the interior is pretty good. I also have an almost complete hardtop parts car with a very straight rust free body. Just buy the MSE and come get it all. I'm pretty sure the Daytona hardtop will be worth a small fortune in the future.

Re: Mecham Racing MSE For Sale

Here is the Daytona Hardtop. It's 1 of 116 hardtop automatic crossfire cars built. The remaining 37 were 5 speed carb.

And here is the parts car. It's a VERY straight rust free car.

Re: Mecham Racing MSE For Sale

Some knothead started gutting it out to turn it into a drag car. They had no idea what they were doing. Motor and trans are gone, I sold the hood, almost everything has been torn out from under the dash.

Is the Daytona rust-free and would you take a trade for the Daytona and parts car? Like a laptop?

Re: Mecham Racing MSE For Sale

The Daytona has some rust, that's why there is a parts car. Some starting in both rear wheelwells. Drivers floor has been replaced, badly. Some rust in the pass door.
No, trades. I need the money to pay bills.

Re: Mecham Racing MSE For Sale

I actually still have my MSE. We ended up selling my wife's 1968 Chevy shortbed instead. And some good news..........the MSE is about to get a little motor work and fixin' up before summer!!

AS FOR CENTER CAPS, I made mine. Take the stock chrome centers and have a local sign shop make the center decals for you. Then tape them off and put a nice thick layer of clearcoat over the decal so it won't get ruined. 99.9% of people won't know the difference.

RADIO, good luck! Keep searching ebay for Delco ETR.
