1984 Camaro 4cyl "Sport"?

Were the sport decals a dealer thing? I've never seen one, but I thought that maybe it was a package for the 4cyl to make them more appealing.

Looks like a TrimLine type of job.

Anybody can stick just about anything they want to any car they want.

Who cares if a car is "rare" when it's the minimum possible version of the car, and no matter what stickers somebody stuck on it.

Looks pretty clean, low miles... why? Because it's a 4cyl?

(this is embarassing) I got a new job. the commute was 60 miles each way. Went to the Chevy dealer in '83 to buy a 4 cylinder Cavalier. They had a 4 banger Camaro for $200 more so.......traded it in in '88 for a REAL Camaro.

Car: 1984 Pontiac Firebird

I guess someone my buy it for the same reasons I bought my 84 Firebird 4 cylinder. It was cheap. It needed some work to get it running and looking good but it was cheap, and it was my first car.

I still have my Iron Duke firebird. Don't plan on getting rid of it any time soon nor do I want to remove the motor. It may not be a "rare" car but it sure is harder and harder to find them.

My car is pictured in a firebird history book by Marc Cranswick because it has the Iron Duke 4 in it.

Someone could ****** that camaro and put in a v8 and drag it or something. The body looks nice and straight.

heres my motor:

Even with a small 4 cyd the engine bay still looks as cluttered as with a V-8.

Just a couple of ?'s for you:

Can you smoke the tires?

How's the handling? With the light(er) motor in front, I'm curious to see how it compares!

actually there is a LOT of room in my engine bay. Just take the air cleaner and upper hoses away and there is plenty of room to work. I guess the picture doesnt do justice. If you see an actual engine bay of an iron duke its pretty bare.

Here is a pic with the air cleaner assembly removed. Its pretty open between the motor and the strut tower.

3.73 rear gears in my car. I think that was standard for the 2.5L

I have removed my fan shroud from the car. Man it opens up all kinds of room.

The F.I. 2.8L motors have more room in between the block and radiator support than the 2.5L though

Yeah that 4-cyl motor is basically half of a Pontiac 301..... so it's fairly bulky in a general way, and as long front to rear as a V8. The 2.8 is only 3 cyls front to rear, considerably smaller bore spacing, and was otherwise just designed to be more compact.

My iron duke car was surprisingly quick...easily quicker than a PT Cruiser..(We had one till last year). and it had a lot of top end...I was clocked at 127 in it on the interstate...Almost cost me my liscense for a year. ( that one ticket was one point short of automatic suspension). I just always got sh$t from one of my close friends that had a new Mustang GT. But the girls sure seemed to like my Camaro better..and that ate him up pretty good! It was Beige metallic, and I had a bra, rear window louvers, and a great set of polished Centerlines on it. It did look better than his Black GT, and for 200 bucks more, it sure beat driving a Cavalier.

AMEN to that man ...lol...hey if it dont go fast make it look like it does.....lol...thats the way to do it nothin wrong with a 4 popper in your car just dont plan on winning any dragraces against that mustang..LOL...and i hate mustangs!!!!...but thats just me but like i said those 4 cyl ones are usually cheaper than one with a v8 and are alot more different than the everyday v6 and youve always got the option of upgrading later to a v8 so its a good car all the way around...

Yeah they were a lot cheaper..even new..The bank would only give me a loan up to 6000.00 including the trade in on my gas hog, 100,000 mile red '79 V-8 Berlinetta, because I didn't make enough to borrow more. The beautiful blue Z-28 in the middle of the showroom was like 8700.00. They had a nice red cavalier for 5400.00 and I was in the process of buying it when I mentioned how much I loved the Z...the sales man said "You like that car?......wait a minute" made a phone call and they drove up the Beige Camaro. It was the first one in that color I had ever seen and I really liked it. He said "this one has the same engine as the Cavalier...it's 6100.00 but I can give it to you for 5600.00. I told him.......SOLD! so yeah they were a lot cheaper than a V-8 car. and gas prices had just gone to a buck a gallon. around 3.00 a gallon at todays prices so the 4 banger made a lot of sense at the time. Anyway that is how people wound up buying an Iron Duke car.

Oh you dont pay more than 3 dollars a gallon, i wish i could do that. I have to pay 1.38 Us dollar per liter so if a Us gallon is 4.5 liters i think then i pay 6.2 Us dollar a gallon. That really sucks.

A couple years ago, I had a set of 14inch rally rims on my car (original size) and went on a road trip. Coupled with my 5 speed manual and Iron Duke 4, I got over 20 miles to the gallon. I had a full tank of gas and drove over two hours both ways plus driving around town and only used a half tank of gas for the weekend.

With my 16 inch rims its less than that. My transmission is "on its way out" and my fuel economy has been less. I haven't driven the car regularly in over a year now.

I talked with my insurance agent about getting it back on my policy due to the rise in gas prices, I may get back into my bird to save gas money.

its been a roller coaster with this car. I hate it due to the very evident lack of power yet I love it due to it's uniqueness and light hit to my wallet.

my bro on the other hand had an 85 camaro that we pulled the v6 and replaced it with the guts of an 88 IROC 350 TPI. He was at the pump slightly more often then I was.

The 4cyl motor that they put in the Camaro and Firebirds (The Iron Duke) is basically the same motor that Chevy put in the Chevy II's in 1966 (151 cid, the Pontiac version the 2.5 is 153 cid)and Mercury used in their Mercruiser 120hp outdrive units. They are very very tough and almost impossible to kill.

off topic but.....I just read this add on E-bay and I'm still laughing..Thought you all would get a kick out of it too...

Up for auction is a set of front and rear seats removed from a 86 Camaro Iroc. These seats are in very good condition for being 18 years old. They are black in color. I will do my best to describe in full the condition. As you can see in the one picture, there is a slight burn hole the size of a penny in the left rear seat. Apparantly the dopes that were wasted thought the back seat was the ashtray and the ashtray was a beer holder. This is a common occurence with these cars. The back carpet is usually trashed as well from underage drinkers thinking the floorpan is a toilet. The driver seat is in good condition and the power motor and controls work, with the exception of the wrinkled lumbar section. This was probably caused from the heavyset driver slouching down driving with one hand while drinking a Schlitz with the other listening to Danzig. The previous owners thought they would customize the driver seat by covering the lower black plastic trim in a velvet material. I dont think this added any value to the car or was a dealer intalled option .Um?, just spray some Flexstone paint to the other dash trim, plaster Edelbrock stickers near the shifter, and make sure the ashtray is completely filled with crap to distract from this piece. Oh yeah install a chain link steering wheel(make sure you have the Grant hub adaptor). and dont forget to install the Kenwood cassette player and make sure the wiring to the rear speakers and amps are lying on the floor so everyone can trip over them. These seats are extremely easy to install. 4 bolts on each front seat and one lower bolt for the rears. A dope like myself removed these and installed a set of 98 Camaro seats in about 45 minutes. There is slight fading on the top of the rear seats and front headrests. Most likely the car was never parked completely under the damaged carport so the sun was able to just slightly fade them. Just throw a Dale Earnhardt towel over them and your all set. Due to the weight of these and the cost of shipping, and I probably couldnt fit these in a box, these are local pick up only. Dont worry I live in a decent part of Phx., you dont have to worry about the huge Doberman attacking you. Im easy to find, I live near the casino off the 101 in a doublewide with a huge 78 Ford pickup with a gun rack parked in front with the license plate that says KEEP HONKING WHILE IM RELOADING . Although I could deliver them if Iron Maiden or Metallica is playing in your town. I'll also throw in a free cigarette lighter to the winning bidder. Once again this is a strange phenomena that 9 out of 10 Camaros that the lighter is missing. Oh yeah I know why, because the idiot that used the lighter was the one that burned the seat and never bothered to tell you. The owner most likely was so pissed he or she just threw it away and covered the hole by cleverly placing the seatbelt over it. I also have a set of matching door panels I will sell or trade for NHRA tickets, a old Escort Fuzz buster, a members only jacket, Coors neon sign, Fisher stereo, or a set of deep dish Centerline wheels with mismatched bald tires. Bid with confidence and check my feedback. I think I described these seats as best I could, if you live in Phx. stop on by and take a look. Maybe we can talk about cars and listen to Whitesnake and have some Whitecastle hamburgers. Please email me if you have any questions or call me on my Motorola brick phone. Sometimes my cellphone doesnt work so my CB handle is mr******topfuelbarnburner. Hey if you dont bid on my auction, at least I killed 45 minutes out of my day, usually time I spent watching Jerry Springer or Dr.Phill. Thanks for looking and laughing. On a final note, anyone who wants to contribute a donation to help fix my 86 Iroc it would be greatly appreciated. Its a real beauty, leaks oil, no ac, damaged quarter panel, overheats, no stereo, engine misses, exhaust leak, bad shocks, window motor is bad, transmission and engine mounts are cracked, brakes are shot, bad power steering pump, and the list goes on and on. I know when this classic is finished and running great, it might be worth as much as my FLOWBEE haircutter. I hope I made your day and made you crack a smile, why take life seriously when you have a Chevy Iroc parked in the front yard on cinder blocks.

Well as i said in another topic a thirdgen iroc in good condition you have to pay like 10000-13000 Us dollars for in Sweden. So 3000 for a iron duke isnt that bad. I paid 11500 Us dollars for my iroc when i bought it four years ago.

I think the Iron Duke F-body is really cool. If I had both unlimited room for my cars and unlimited funds I would own one. I can't imagine there being that many on the roads anymore.

I've always liked your car a lot billsfirebird.

Thanks!

I have not seen many other Iron Dukes on the road around here (can't really tell unless you look under the hood). I have only seen a handful in the junk yards.

I have my car it "storage" right now. I have the interior out trying to fix some issues in my firewall and floor pan (nothing serious). I want to go over the entire car and fix it up real nice. Unfortunately time and money are not availible at this point. Like I mentioned before, Ive thought about selling it but my wife has talked me out of it. what a woman!

later,

bill

I think the deal on the z28 that you saw in the showroom was a pretty good one if the z was a third gen. I bought a 1982 Firebird S/E brand new in 1982 and it cost $12,500, or there abouts. The Trans Ams were a few thousand more.

Yeah ..it was a high volume dealer in Chicago...the sticker price was 10,800......but they sold all their cars at 100.00 over invoice.......the sticker on my iron duke was 8,100.00...the dealer ship is still there...on the corner of 147th and Cicero ave.

I had one of these 4 banger camaro's way back in 1984, min was a true stripper, no a/c no radio, no power options, was the 5 speed a option for this engine, mine had a 4 speed.

I think brand new mine was somewhere in the neighborhood of just a hair under 10,000, later in the year I bought a new 84 trans am it was stickered at 17,000, but it had every option for 84 to.

even with a lighter motor the camaro couldn't even come close to the trans am in the corners, perhaps with better tires sway bars etc. but prior to getting to the corner the trans am was so far ahead it really wouldn't have made a difference.

for a teenager car sure the 4 banger was fun, and looked a hell of alot better than any mustang of the same era, in the early 80's the f-body was the car to have.
