Fastest american production car EVER..... It's an f-body
I heard today that a early 70's firebird was it.
It had a 400, special tranny and rearend.
Did the qtr in 10 flat @ 170+
I don't know if its true, but the guy i talk cars w/ is a freakin guru. He said that you could drive this car off the showroom floor and do what i just said.
I thought this would be a good place to verify this.
thanks

Do you mean like a '70 Trans Am? Some how I don't think so, I mean if that were true it would be one of the most sought after collectors cars and they are not....

I have never heared anything like that. Id think that if it was an F-body most people around here would have at least heared of it.
I do not know what the fastest domestic production car is/was, but i have never heared "70's Firebird" mentioned whenever the topic comes up.

maybe if you completely gutted it and put slicks on it
with their tire technology , I would be surprised to see any kind of traction, I smell BS , as far as I know 70's TA's were in the 12s range...
I don't see why a vette wouldn't be faster , it seems like Vette is always a bit more "faster/powerful" than any camaro or trans am

He is completely full of crap. True, the Ram Air IV's were very quick cars, but I do not believe they were much (if any) quicker than the '73 SD 455, and those were far from 10 second cars...

I always recalled the quicked production car being the 427 AC Cobra until the Viper. Both are still 12 second cars.
I've NEVER heard of any production car ever hitting 11s let alone 10s without mods.

My father had one, 1976 firebird plain jane had a special motor along with tranny and rear gears. the motor was classified 400 H.O.SD it had well over 500hp. this is what GM told my dad. He had 1 of 7 car that got the motor. The car did 90 in first gear.

It was actually one of eight. My daddy had one too. But he had RPO X71, body delete (his was the only one of the eight that had this elusive option), so it was MUCH faster than your dads due to the reduced weight of the vehicle. RPO X71 could not be ordered manually. It was triggered by cigarette lighter delete and ordering Deluxe 8 track player with CB along with factory tinted glass. I Swear, it went 115 in first. I have pictures somewhere, I just, um, don't know where they are right now. My dad is a freakin car guru, he worked for GM for 40 years, so I know he ain't lying.

The only thing even close to that is the 69 ZL1 Camaro. It was an all-aluminum 427 big block engine.

funny thing I always hear is someone saying blah blah blah, yeah it did 55 in first! what the heck does that mean?? nothing, ok it's a 2 speed powerglide that revs to 9,000 with 2.07 rear gears, and it's only got 75 horse power. sure it can do 55 or 90 or whatever in first, but that doesn't mean anything. *** I could say the same. OMG my 135 horse or so v6 sport coupe can do 38 in first 73 in second 118 in third and theoretically 160 in fourth but it'll never get there and It will take it about 3 weeks to get to 160 mph if it could, so that makes my car awesome. stupid and uninformed kids. thank *** I know BS when I see it and I hear it.

fiream I don't know about you. hmm it's not a firebird or a transam, oh it must be a fiream
if you were to combine those 2 you'd have a formula. I hear to much BS from you, and the sad thing is, half the time you don't even know it's BS.
I gotta get that '88 iroc I've been looking at and get rid of the SC, then I won't be classified as one of the "V6/stupid teens, with the spirit of a rodder, but got taught too much BS from dad, and doesn't know a whole lot of truth beyond dad's trash talking about all the chargers, vettes, and mustangs he beat on the street and the strip w/ his 396 '69 Camaro SS."
SO I won't blame FireAm. I'll blame his dad.
Honestly most of the under 21 crowd here has a V6, and we are uninformed because our fathers (who were rodders in their younger days) loaded us up w/ too much bs and crap.
I don't know where all that came from, but It's kinda true.
Sorry to all who I've offended.

I totally agree with your statement about the our 'dad's loading us up with crap', the reason being is because we were young and we weren't there when he had his "500hp Trans Am" . Fortunately, my dad took pictures of all his cars so i know he hasn't been BS'n me. Maybe fiream can post a picture of his dad's Trans Am.

You had better look up a 1970 GSX Stage 1.
13.3 in BONE STOCK form.
LS6 Chevelle couldn't even touch it.

Sorry buddy. Im a buick freak but even i know the LS6 would take out a Stage 1 GSX. 500+ ft/lbs. made it one hell of a dragracer, but the LS6's superior HP (450hp) would get it. Many people confuse LS5 cars with the LS6 cars and i could see a Stage 1 455 car taking a LS5, but the LS6 is the king of the streets. and as for 13.3, my buddy has a BONE stock 99 Z that just pulled a 13.3 out at RT.66 about 2 weeks ago. I love the LS1.
BTW, im also under 21 and own a L98 iroc. but my dad was kinda full of BS as well so i know what your talking about.

well I just hear stories ya know what I mean. I see pics too. Of a 1-3 year old '69 'Maro SS w/ the 325 hp 396, not the 375 hp 396. Le Mans Blue, w/ a vette BB style funtional cowl hood. Sittin' on Cragars, and L-60's and F-60's I believe. the best he did was a 13.8 @ 103 on slicks back in 1971. But yet he doesn't give a whole lot of respect to my friend's '85 IROC clone w/ a 406 TPI runnin' 12.1 @ 123 w/ horrid traction. why because it's not his generation and it's fuel injected even though from a new to new standpoint (w/ the iroc having it's stock 305) and my dad's stock the '69 SS would do marginally better than the iroc, but the iroc would kick it's butt in every other catagory.
our father's talk so much trash because they are afraid, very afraid.

I hate to say it but I would put my money on the GSX over the Chebby anyday. The 455 Stage one GS's can click off 13.1s with a frickin column shifted Turbo 400, now that my freinds is power. THe best I have ever heard an LS6 70 Chevelle run in stock trim was just that a 13.1, figure the GSXs slightly lower stance and stiffer suspension, tach, and a floor shifter I think a good driver could hit a 12.9 or a 13.0 flat.....a close race yes, but I would put the cash on the GSX. But the guy who said the SD-455 was the fastest bird is right, and I bet that 13.50 car was spinning all the way, imagine what slicks would do. My old 74 TA Bucaneer red, decal package, white interior, 400 T-400 trans 3:42 saftey trac ran a best of 13.8 @ 105MPH with just a 2.5" h-pipe Flowmaster Exhaust, and a B&M 4.0 manual valve body and shift kit on drag radials. 73 and 74 were killer years for the TAs thats for sure.
As for the fastest production car ever made you all missed it, its the 68 Hemi Dart. Totally striped and ordered drag ready bone stock you could pull a 10.8 on a slick with little trouble. Its been in an issue of car craft, thats where I found it, and yes he had the build sheet to prove it. That is one fast Beotch...
Sorry for writing a book, got carried away.

yeah too bad the 72+ camaros sucked so bad. the 70-73 was my favorite styling. though others are beautiful, my dream classic car would be a 71 Camaro RS/SS (gotta have that split bumper too) w/ a 427 and a 4 on the floor. black, red, hugger orange, or yellow.

Hey, I'm 18 and I have a V8, true it is an LO3 but I'm swapping to a 383 as soon as I have money. And my dad has never really been able to BS because the only fast car he had was a Chevy II Nova before he got drafted and his dad sold it when it broke down.
