Rebuild the ls1,stroker kit or get 6.0l

Hey guys Im at a crossroad in figuring out what I want to do now that Ive gotten my ls1 swap done and ironed out all issues. When I bought the motor I was told it did have issues and should be rebuilt and i got it cheap. Its making a clacking sounds while running which suggests the bottom end is falling apart. It runs great though and no codes but smokes badly when I step on it hard.I can drive it for now and take it easy and save up for the winter.

My goal is to have a quick ls1,I was looking at doing the heads,porting..milling,valves and springs,228r cam,ls6 intake.I have a custom y pipe that steps up from 2.5inch from the manifolds to dual 3inch cats and 3 inch cat back that flows very well so I wont be doing long tube headers.Id like to be at the 400-450hp range to the wheels.

Is it worth rebuild the 5.7ls1 with a rebuild kit and the mods above, and if the rebuild kits are like building a gen1 sbc then a stroker kit is only a few bucks more then should I go that route.Or ditch the ls1 and swap everything onto a 6.0l and do a cam.

Im trying to stay in the 5grand spending limit and have a nicely cammed ls.I have a ls7 clutch that is great but I dont want to be pushing its power handling limits and have it grenade.

Need opinions.

Re: Rebuild the ls1,stroker kit or get 6.0l

If i can find another block thats cheap enough and build that while this ls1 is till in the car now then yes Ill do that.hopefully it will be a 6.0L.if Not then iLl pull the ls1 out have it built in about a week and drop it back in.Im not looking for crazy power,I just know that 400-450hp isnt a far cry for an lsx.I might really consider doing a forged stroker kit and maybe one day add a maggie and small boost.I love good torque and midrange power.

Re: Rebuild the ls1,stroker kit or get 6.0l

I've been looking into snagging a bare block for building myself. Since I have all the time in the world I'm hoping a deal on an ls2 block will come my way. Other than that 6.0L block vs 5.7L block is going to be about the same price with the 5.7L block having the weight advantage vs. 18 extra cubes.

Whats the weight difference between the two? Wasn't it like 80lbs or something bare?

But if I were to do it right now I would probably grab a 5.3L block, bore it and throw a stroker assembly at it.

Re: Rebuild the ls1,stroker kit or get 6.0l

just do a refresh on the ls1 and put a slightly bigger cam in it. 228R should get you near 400 whp if not abit over on a well tuned setup. SOme ported heads or 243/799 castings will get you over 400whp much easier.

If you already have the LS1, just make it new again...freshen up the bottom end, upgrade rod bolts while your at it and run it.

The differance between the aluminum blocks and the cast iron blocks is approx 65lbs.

Re: Rebuild the ls1,stroker kit or get 6.0l

Im thinking to freshen it up and do a stroker kit.Depending on the prices to stroke an ls1 and machining I will either port n polish the 241 heads,228r cam, springs, pushrods, arp bolts,ls2 timing set,ls6 oil pump,ls6 intake.Should be a great midrange motor where Ill spend most of the time driving.

What are some good stroker kits I should possibly look at?

buy a cheap semi low mileage 5,3 complete, sell off all the parts you dont need, swap the short block in and use the money from the sold parts towards a turbo set-up.

my 2 cents.

Re: Rebuild the ls1,stroker kit or get 6.0l

If I were to go boost Id probably go SC.Its mostly street driven and not long distances.Id barely get into turbos boost range to enjoy it.Im not looking for much but Im more of a torque kinda guy..not peak hp.I think a basic bolt on ls1 would keep me very happy depending on the combo. If i take the ls1 out..refresh it or stroke it plus the mods mentioned above should meet or exceed my goals.

Then if I start getting bored of it ..8+ lbs of boost with a easy maggie ontop will fix that lol.

You already have a block ready to be built for your specs so I would go with a LS1 build. You can grab a used motor but unless you know the seller, you might be buying an engine ready to give out.

I did some research for a friend that has a high-mileage LS1 and was looking to upgrade. He wanted to freshen up his engine and add a little cam for his future plans of going with a supercharger w/a 500-550rwhp goal. The LS9 is a great cam if you see a maggie in your future, can't beat it for the price!!!

LS9 ZR1 cam (211/230 .558/.552 122.5 LSA) ($115)
LS9 MLS head gaskets ($80)
LS9 Springs/ 1.190” Coil Bind .580” Lift Camshaft ($80)
LS7 Lifters ($130)
Melling oil pump 10296 ($130)
LS2 Front Cover($78)
LS2 timing chain and gear set ($100)
Comp 7.4 pushrods ($140)
ARP Rod bolts ($80)

$900~

-Federal Mogul/Speed Pro 152M Main Bearing Set LS1 ($100)
-Federal Mogul LS1/SBC Rod Bearing Set, Competition Series, Super Duty Alloy, Chamfer (STD) PN 129-7100CH ($100)
-Dura-Bond LS1/6 Cam Bearing Set (to be used with GM Gen 3 engines up through 2004 which use the longer version head bolts) 88-DUR-CHP-10 ($35)
-Mahle Motorsport Forged 347 cid LS1 Flat-Top Piston Set: 3.905" Bore, 3.622" Stroke, 6.125" Rod Length, .927" Wrist Pins, 1.314" CH, -4cc; Includes Piston Rings, Pins, and Spiro-Locks P/N 189-LS1314905F04 ($614)

Re: Rebuild the ls1,stroker kit or get 6.0l

Thanks for that info.I didnt think of having a proper cam if I do go magnacharged later on.I think I would be happy with a cam in the 228r range for all around performance, good lope, and streetability/reliability.Im pulling the car off the road after this week so that I can start saving up and less chance of it blowing up as Im out somewhere far.I get a dtc yesterday finally as I watched my driver side o2 begin to go lean when its under 2000rpm and backfiring.Passenger side is bang on stoich.I think oil is literally blowing right out of #7 and fouling everything up

When I do yank this out and look at the costs of a complete rebuild vs adding a few more cubes ontop then Ill see if just replacing the block with a 6L is cheaper and swap all the ls1 parts onto it and do some basic boltons if my wallet permits it.

It's not real popular to stroke a LS1 due to the cylinder size...you become somewhat limited in your intake valve size. If you are willing to spend the money to stroke it, I'd start with a bigger platform. Or just freshen up your LS1 and put a maggie on it like I did and you will be grinning from ear to ear.

Re: Rebuild the ls1,stroker kit or get 6.0l

I was wondering why I dont see too many 383 ls1s out there. Thanks for the tip,I do love your setup 406TPI.Sounds good and makes impressive numbers for whats done to the motor.

I just scanned my car for codes and Im getting P0135.Not sure what it does but im betting its the o2 sensor not being happy with all that blow by oil.
