1986 IROC-Z Build Thread (lots of pictures!)

Hey all, my name is Kevin. I've been a member here I believe since 2008 when I first purchased my 86' IROC Camaro. You may have seen it around here and there on the site. The purpose of this thread is for me to centralize all of my efforts in keeping up-to-date pictures and progress reports on the car. Like a lot of you, I have poured a lot of time, energy and MONEY into the car over the years to get it where it is now. It is definitely a never ending project even though I completed a lot on the build this spring already. I have plans in the next few years to bump the heart to a 406 sbc, but that will again take time, energy and a lot of MONEY that I don't have right now (my wife and I are ready to buy a house finally!)

Here is a build sheet I put together of how the car stands now, followed by some recent pictures.

Engine
• 360cu, 2 piece rear main, 4 bolt, ARP hardware intake to oil pan
• 11.4:1 static compression, 93 octane
• Speedpro domed hypereutectic domed pistons with valve reliefs; -11.8cc volume
• Holley 650 mechanical double pumper, Holley HP main body (choke delete, high flow, 750 conversion, 1” phelonic spacer)

• JEG’s (Profiler rebranded) aluminum heads, 195cc intake, 72cc combustion chamber, 2.02/1.60 intake/exhaust ports, screw in studs with guide plates, angle plug, D-shape exhaust ports
• Comp Cams High Energy 1.5 full aluminum roller rockers
• Comp Cams Magnum pushrods, hardened, 5/16 diameter, 7.900” (+.100”)
• Cometic MLS head gaskets, .051” quench
• Comp Cams XE274 camshaft, hydraulic flat tappet, 1,800 to 6,000 rpm, 230/236 duration at .050”, .490/.490 valve lift
• Proform GM licensed die-cast aluminum valve covers
• MSD E-Curve distributor
• MSD Digital 6A ignition box
• MSD Blaster 3 coil

Transmission
• T56 6-speed, LT1 style
• SPEC Stage 4 solid unsprung 6-puck clutch disc

Exhaust

• (2x) 3” to 2.5” s-bend reducers
• (2x) straight pipes to (2x) 2-chamber offset Flowmaster 40 series

Suspension/Tires
• Tires: 245/50/16 BFGoodrich g-Force Sports, 255/50/16 Mickey Thompson ET Streets
• Stock IROC wonderbar
• Spohn rear tubular control arms; poly bushings

This picture was taken a few days ago and is how the car currently sits. It kills me not to have a garage to keep this in right now - it spent all winter outside under an all-season California car cover with gust guards.

This is how the engine bay currently sits. I'm pretty happy with how it looks these days. You can check out another thread I made here to see how I sprayed the engine bay with the motor still in. Whenever I get around in the future to taking it out again, I'll do it up proper. I'm hoping I have a son in the near future that wants to work on cars - it would be a great excuse to tear it apart again

This is an HDR picture my wife took of me. We share a common interest in cameras and have been having fun recently learning together. She loves taking HDR shots. We use a Canon T3i with various lenses for all of our photos these days (50mm 1.8, 85mm 1.8, 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8)

We continuously try and improve our photoshop lightroom skills:

Not too many weeks ago, this is how the car sat...

Not too long ago, the car was included in the 2012 MSD parts catalog, its claim to fame!

It's only been in a couple of shows, but has taken prizes both times:

Blew up the stock 10 bolt for the first time on the way home from the 2009 award!

Did that a few more times... I still need to get myself a 9" haha.

This photo has received a lot of attention over the past couple of years:

And about 2 months prior to that, it looked like this after someone hit the side of it. Gave me a great excuse to finally lay new paint on it!

And here is what it looked like when I first saw the car before buying it in 2008:

very nice car man. What kind of air filter is that? I see you have an air gap and a 1" spacer under a stock hood and i'm looking for something that will fit my car

Even with the air gap intake, I was still getting vaporization of my fuel at the track on a hot day. After adding the spacer, the issue was gone. I was previously using a 3x14" filter, took that down to a 2x14" K&N filter with a drop base and a Summit powerlid pass-through top.

Wow! I head to Owego twice a week. My parents are in Newark Valley. Have you ever seen my car around or have I seen you around? Have any pictures of your car? I head to Skyview Drags on Friday nights over the summer for test and tune.

I love your car, I love the wheels with the Mickeys on the back. It's so clean and yet it is a sleeper too.

Well you definitely haven't seen my Camaro around. I bought it a year ago and have yet to finish the rebuild enough to get it on the road. However I drive probably the only pontiac vibe'rator' with a racing stripe though... I thought I recognized your car in the beginning before seeing that your in Binghamton. Build thread is here for mine should be closer to finished this summer. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/memb...-here-she.html

Haha, that's what I like. I like nice, clean looking rides that perform very well. I feel like what I've done with this car is give the trained eye some pretty solid clues that its pretty quick. Anyone just glancing wouldn't give it a second thought.

Maybe I missed it what does it run? I just got my 255/50/16 Mickeys on this week, it is such a night and day difference it's ridiculous... Probably the best single mod I have ever done to a car. I can actually take advantage of my torque converter now!

I've only ever had it to the local 1/8th mile and its been 2 years since I've been, but it ran 8.29 @ 85.2mph without the new heads and MSD setup. I feel confident it should dive well into the 7's - it is definitely much stronger now. On top of that, I'm thinking of starting to run a small shot of giggle juice just to give it that much more. Should be fun!

I agree on the Mickey's - even with my 6 speed, banging through the gears, the tires do not bark, there is no drama or hoola dancing, it just dead hooks and goes. Perfectly compliments the SPEC stage 4 clutch that really moves it off the line.

Here is my previous best run:

New 1/8th mile numbers and video should be up sometime this coming Sunday. Pending weather, I'll be heading to the track this Saturday mid-day to get some passes in. Hope I don't bust up the 10-bolt yet again!

Just a small plug for the group - ThirdGen-Nation has elected me as their featured ride this week on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ThirdGenNation?fref=ts. Check them out!

As a follow up, I did go to the track this past weekend but was fighting fuel issues while there and the car didn't perform well - ran about the same as before. Once I get the fuel issue sorted, I'll head back. Ordered a wideband to install this weekend.
