changing v-belt system to a serpentine system

I am interested in changing my v-belt system over to a serpentine system. Just wondering if anyone could provide info regarding:
1 - estimated price of the conversion?
2 - what new parts are needed?
3 - any place that I could get detailed/step by step instructions on the conversion process?
Thanks for the help!

I did this on my 82 Z. I used pulleys of a 87 IROC. It has Serpentine Alternator belt, and V-belts for Power Steering, Air and Smog Pump. It is a direct swap with factory 82-85 V belt setups. I also bought March underdrive Crank, and Alternator pulleys for around $70.00 I bought the 3-peice factory set-up from a salvage yard for $30.00. This is the simplest way to change over to serpentine. now, if you were referring to the 1-belt Serpentine such as 88-up cars, then I think you have to have All the pulleys, bracketry, and all. I know my 89 RS has the Alternator and Air Cond Compressor on opposite sides than my factory 82 V belt set-up did. I only had to change the 3 pulleys for my set-up. Its the only way to go unless you have a newer engine you can rob EVERYTHING off of, in my opinion. I shift my car at 6400 and it has seen 6900-7100, and i have not once thrown a belt since changing to Serpentine. Hope this helps

A note of clarification on the previous post. The '85 - '87 v-belt system is not considered "serpentine" because it consists of multiple belts. The '88 - '92 system is a true serpentine. I just converted my '87 to a serpentine system where I used parts from a '92 305 RS.

1 - estimated price of the conversion?
This would depend what what parts you can obtain from a junk yard. Since I already had every part including nuts, bolts and bracketry, I can't help here.

I can tell you that you will need the following:
1) Both accessory brackets,
2) Three support brackets (one on driver's side and two for the passenger side),
3) Alternator (different mounting hole location,
4) A/C compressor (different design),
5) A/C compressor electrical connector,
6) A/C line assembly,
7)Water pump (reverse flow on serpentine) with pulley,
8) Power steering pump with pulley,
9) Assorted Torx bolts, & a
10) Serpentine belt.

I did not confirm whether the air pump is different. To do this, call an auto parts store and see if the part numbers for an '85 - '87 is different from an '88 - '92.

In addition, wiring length needs to be modified for the A/C and alternator, now that they are on opposite sides.

There are two ways to route the new wiring. You can mish-mash them across the front of the engine or do it correctly by breaking them out of the original wiring looms to the rear of the engine and relocating them to the "new" right and left sides.

2 - what new parts are needed?
Again, this depends on whether you're comfortable reusing an old water pump, etc. I bought a new Stewart water pump and alternator.

3 - any place that I could get detailed/step by step instructions on the conversion process?
I don't think anyone has taken the time to write up instructions, but if you need help, I can supply whatever info you need.

Thanks guys! I am going to start hunting for parts once the holidays are over. I'll let you know the switch is going and I will definitely post any difficulties I encounter along the way.

If you are going to be installing a vortech, you wont even need the drivers side bracket. The vortech kit replaces everything on that side completely.

If you run into trouble finding something, call Camaro Heavan. 1-800-camaro1
That is where I found the stuff I couldnt find elsewhere.

Good luck.

If you don't have a/c then you need the 1LE ac delete bracket, right?. What else, would you need besides that?
