Twin Turbo 400 Buildup- '89 Iroc-Z

Figured it was time to post up my build plans this winter/spring and show some of the progress I have made.

I'm moving on from the nitrous motor to a twin turbo setup, my first boosted car so I'm very excited.

Anyway here is what i have going on. UPDATED 7/30/2010

MOTOR:

Originally to be my 383 block with new pistons, i decided to step up to a beefier setup.
Its gonna be a 400 inch motor based on the new DART SHP blocks. 350 main, 4.125 bore. JE blower pistons for 9 to 1 compression. Callies Compstar rods/crank. ARP everywhere. Splayed main caps as from Dart. Should be a stout bottom end.

Cam is a Mike Jones custom grind hyd roller, 233/233 on a 112. .564/.564 lift with 1.6's

Victor EFI with custom elbow. LS1 throttlebody

Heads will be the same AFR 195's from the 383.

Fuel system will be dual intank walbro's from Lonnies Performance. -8an feed, -6an return.

Tranny will be a built TH400 with PTC converter..about 4000 stall.

Rear is still a stock 10 bolt 2.73 gear. SOmeday will upgrade but cant seem to break this one.

ECM control I am using a 730 ecm with the cyclone/typhoon code 59 bin.

Now onto the good stuff.

Turbos are T4 T60 turbos from Master Power for my first budget build. .68 a/r (alittle small but should still work) with 60.5/84mm compressor wheel and their P-trim turbine.

Tight fit, but 3" downpipes into true dual 3" exhaust with x pipe.

JGS 40mm wastegates will top it all off along with Tial 50mm blowoff valve.

Front mount air to air intercooler by Treadstone

here's my progress:

Front clip is off, had to pull the old 383 to sell.

Hard part is to clear the steering shaft and brake lines/booster while leaving enough room for a respectable Downpipe to go between cylinders 5 and 7.

Re: Twin Turbo 400 Buildup- '89 Iroc-Z

looking good

couple notes from me. I have run the a1000 on the street allot for up to an hour and a half each way with no issues and no controller. The clutch, I ran both a spec 3 and then a 4 and they could not hold for crap at around 650hp range. I switched to a twin disk mcloud and it was night and day. Great clutch with stock feel and no chatter crap. The downside is it will break that rear the first time to the track. I snapped an axle on my 2nd attempt at the track. 1st run easy launch 11.7@130mph 2nd pass 3800 dump and snapped an axle. I just got a new motor and switched to a turbo 400.

From a bolt on 350 to a twin turbo 400 in a year or two eh? How's that tree growing so fast???

What do you think of those Hooker flanges? I've been considering getting them. They look pretty good in the pictures.

Looking good Justin, Its gonna be a sick ride man! Really put a good amount of effort into my car this winter. Little BS that I never wanted to waste time on. I am sure it will blow up now though. Having issues with the t56 after rebuild, gotta drive more to see though.. Just got it running today after about a month down, will be throwing n2o on again very soon if all is ok. Worked on tuning a little yesterday, its been very rich for long time, and laptop has been broken.. Glad to see your plans coming together, it giving me some push for mine. And making me miss the 87 that much more!!

The hooker flanges are nice pieces but rather pricey at 175 a pair. But they are finished welded around the flange so thats nice and makes it easier to start building a header with it. Plus i needed a 1.75 hole to cover the AFR exhaust port and these were the only ones i could find

Re: Twin Turbo 400 Buildup- '89 Iroc-Z

what are your hp goals? i think u could have went with a higher a/r on the turbine side, at least a 1.00. a 400ci with excellent flowing heads will have no trouble spooling those turbos, have u looked into using the mpt70' eventually? Tiago on ls1tech made over 1000rwhp with a pair of t70's on 346ci ls engine, the 346 didnt have much trouble spooling a twin set ot t70's, with a m6. i have used the mpt70 before and it works really well in remote mounts even with the .96 a/r

Re: Twin Turbo 400 Buildup- '89 Iroc-Z

I was looking for a street type setup near 700whp. 700 was my main goal but at any time i'd like to go to a higher boost setting and run 800 or so. I didnt want to go higher than that.

The turbos were originally intended to run on a 383 for 650whp but i decided to go SHP block. I still can go SHP block and 383 or destroke that 400 to a 372 as its all about same price. I'm not sure yet.

I'm going to try these .68 a/r's and if they spool too quick or dont make the power due to backpressure issues and lack of flow, i can upgrade to the .96 a/r housing for just cost of the housing.

One guy i've talked to used T70's with .68's I believe and saw full boost in the 4300 rpm range which is perfect for me, i expect the smaller 60's to do near 3200-3400. He went to .96's and saw 5000 rpm full boost which is too much as i'm looking to shift by 6000 or a touch sooner

I've seen another setup use the T61's on a twin 400 with .68 a/r run 9.5's at 144. Thats about as fast as i intend to go. I went 10.6 at 127-128 with 520ish whp. I figure i need 600 to touch 9's with ok launch. 700 should get me down in the mid high 9's comfortably

Quick mockup of the drivers side. Wastegate location will be abit harder than i thought and require alot more pipe length as i have to go under neath the manifold and connect to the DP from there. I can fit a 3" DP tho so i'm happy with that!

Good question, its looking to be as high as my throttle body exit on the compressor housing. It may clear but will be close. We'll see when we get there

As you can see the driver side sits higher but thats the way it has to sit for the downpipe to clear everything. The passenger side is sitting abit lower which kinda sucks since i wanted it even as possible. Not the end of the world tho. I dont think its gonna clear the hood on the drivers side now that i look at it but I'll see when I get that far. I dont mind trimming the hood to fit and maybe make some scoops to feed these turbos

You gonna have those manifolds TIGed or are you going to finish them with a MIG welder? Just curious as I noticed you tacked them together.

Re: Twin Turbo 400 Buildup- '89 Iroc-Z

ah ha! finally made an offical thread eh??

I'm loving the work you are doing man. I was just looking in my engine bay yesterday thinking "how is he gonna make this work..." and well, you made it work! That is some incredible fab work and looks professionally done. I am very impressed, and can't wait to see it on the strip. You better tell me the first time you're going; there is no way I am missing this!

although I really don't know if it will clear the stock hood. Maybe for right now barely, but once everything is finished and fabbed/fitted and working, I just dont think you'll make it. You already had that little notch in the hood for the end of the plenum, and those turbos look like they'll be over that easily (if they already arn't)

whats your plan if it doesnt fit??

Not sure yet.. well see when i get to that point

You gonna have those manifolds TIGed or are you going to finish them with a MIG welder? Just curious as I noticed you tacked them together.
Probly a mix of both, my buddy is gonna finish it up and he loves TIG welding, but there is some fill work that needs to be done that may be MIG. Not sure yet, he'll have to decide.

How will the spark plug/boots clearence be with the downpipe between the 5/7 and 6/8 cylinders? Do yo uhave straight plugs?
I have enough clearance if i run them under the header instead of coming up over the valve cover and dropping down. Going over the valve cover may make them touch the pipe.
L98 angle plug AFR heads, and those last spark plugs are pointing right at the downpipe so that sucks. I'm gonna have to wrap the downpipe up alot to protect the plug boots. It looks to have good clearance but i havent fully mocked it up to see, i just have the plugs in the heads for now to give an idea

u should also look into turbo blankets as well, those turbine housings are gonna radiate alot of heat after some hard runs, with the dp and housings so close to everything, esp. on the driver side. u may have to wrap all your lines with fire sleeves as well

I'm planning on sumping the tank with A1000 pump and running 8an line. I think I may get rid of the HSR for a single plane with elbow and those rails are setup for 8AN fittings, so it be perfect. No real clue yet how i'm gonna do it. I hope to run it up the drivers side like stock since my exhaust is on the passenger side.

And yes I'm going to run turbo blankets. I want the heat isolated as much as possible

runnnin both the lines up the drivers side is the only safe way to do it imo. i drilled holes i n my tank and welded some hydralic an fittings on it and it worked out good. if ya need some help or got a question shoot me a pm.

Considering most blow thru carb guys run 10an lines, and only run 5-7 psi fuel pressure plus whatever it goes up to on the boost, and considering fuel injection is closer to 50psi, I think i could get away with 8AN lines for most power requirements up to 1000hp. There is a local shop that does gas tank sump conversions for good price so i'm gonna try that, and hopefully this A1000 with aero's controller to limit voltage on the street at low rpm works out. Long way to go before i get to pulling the tank for that

Ok i finished the passenger side manifold today. Its rough and needs patch work but not bad.

I didnt like how the passenger turbo was down a good inch compared to the other so i made a spacer on the collector and evened them out. Also rotated the housings to point in the directions i will do the cold side piping

Problem is it will not clear the hood. I'll paint the compressor housings black and make a cut in the hood to allow them to clear

subscribed SWEET build! on the hood issue, depending where the turbo's are, would a jongbloed(<spelling?) hood fit over them? and on the pre 91/92 gfx, it would look good and save weight

Edit, its a wide cowl but not wide enough... Just not gonna cover the turbos housing. Kinda sucks cuz i had that hood as a backup idea. Then again there is something about turbos sticking out of the hood that gives me a smile

Still planning on the D&D T56? I've decided to go for it. I wonder how much slower it'll be than my th350.

Hood's gonna be interesting...

T56 is on my mind thats for sure. Tick Performance is probly gonna do the beef up rebuild. I just hope it can hold the power. I wont be pushing it too hard but I kinda want to keep it an auto and see how fast i can at the same time.... hard decision to make, i always wanted a stick shift car

T-56 all the way, You wont regret it! I was one of the first people on TGO to do the swap and have done a few since then. Just don't scimp out on the clutch like I did. Get a dual disc clutch that will hold up to your new combo....

Re: Twin Turbo 400 Buildup- '89 Iroc-Z

The passenger side was able to clear the hood i think and certainly could have been lowered, but the driver side because of the brake booster/lines and tall valve covers, it needed to be angled over to allow downpipe to go between the 5/7 cylinder tubes. it works out good but because of that angle it pushes the turbo up so I moved the other side up to match. If one wont clear the hood, might as well make it even and have both sticking out a bit.

I think you probly could have lowered it down, but the downpipe would have to have a funky angle to go around the brake lines coming out of the booster/reservoir.

That trip to Michigan would be a good break in drive for the motor.

Re: Twin Turbo 400 Buildup- '89 Iroc-Z

Be awhile since my last update.

Plan on keeping the HSR i think but these angle plug heads scare me. They point right at the downpipes. I dont have much room so i dont want to burn a plug wire.
May go with straight plugs but not sure yet.

Anyway, worked on downpipes and wastegates this weekend and few days last week.

Ordered radiator and intercooler so i can start doing final cooler piping before it all gets welded up

I was planning on wrapping the downpipe well, and using wire fire sleeves/sheilds. As well as wrapping the brake lines/booster/etc. The manifolds will be ceramic coated. I hope it keeps it cool enough

Some more progress. Mounted new radiator most of the way complete, mounted the intercooler, and finished charge pipes. still have to do main feed tube to the TB and finish wastegates before it all gets final welded. Then i gotta finish the exhaust to downpipe tubes.

yeah, i need to go over the rad. I got a 15.5" tall rad to help this. Cutting the rad top support to get 3" piping over it. Tight fit, will require pin on hood for sure.
