How much air goes in the deflated donut spare?

Just got a flat, I can usually fix it myself with a plug but it's leaking from the rubber in the valve. I want to install the donut spare which comes deflated in the IROC. Of course the car didn't have the original inflation cannister. Anyway this has happened at home so it's not an emergency, so I started inflating the spare with air & it has taken a weird shape at about 20 pounds. It has cracks in the rubber on the sidewalls and is leaning towards the outside part of the tire. Anyway I'm going to fill it to 30 lbs. It doesn't say anything about pressure on the tire itself. Anyone know what the proper pressure should be on these spares?? The car is an 89 IROCZ with 16 inch wheels.

Look on the driver's side door placard.

Unfortunately, it's long gone. The tire seems to have taken a "good" shape at 30 pounds. James are the "cracks" in the sidewall "normall" or is this spare past it's useful life. The tire probably has never been used before, but I have read that tires "age" even though they are never used. What would be a replacement alternative at this point for another spare to carry?

Normal on the ones I've seen--personally, I wouldn't trust a tire that old. By the way, my placard says 35 pounds. An alternative is the fourthgen spare. Check the following link (second page) for more info:
