2001 Trans am WS6 Shocks

Will they fit on my 1992 Firebird Formula? My friend got new shocks on his 2001 trans am, so if his old WS6 ones will fit on mine im sure i can get them for a good price.

Re: 2001 Trans am WS6 Shocks

They're GARBAGE. Like ANY factory shocks with more than a year or 15,000 miles on them. Why do you think he's getting new ones for his OWN car? Are you going to be his "greater fool" and help finance his essential routine maintenance for him, or what?

So yeah, if he'll pay you to take them, they could be a good deal ... as long as he paid you enough to cover both the labor to change them out, AND the cost of new functional ones to replace them. Me, I wouldn't take them for free; and I SURE AS HELL wouldn't pay even ONE CENT for them. In fact, if someone came to my house and tried to give them to me, I'd shoot them for littering on my property.

Oh, dang. Thanks for telling me. But how can I tighten the car up? Feels too loose for my liking. I dont want to spend a whole ton. Like what parts would you recommend.

Re: 2001 Trans am WS6 Shocks

New ones.

ANY new (except Gabriel) are better than ANY used.

You can get stock replacement-ish Monroe SensaTracs; for something a little better, the KYBs or Edelbrocks; or you can REALLY bite off and get Bilstein or Tokico or Koni. The Koni yellows are probably the best there is for the street, with the Tokico Illuminas being the next best. Those are near $200 a wheel though.

Ahh, thanks. I dont want to spend more then about 400-500$. And are they easy to install? Do I just reuse the old springs?

Since the springs will literally fall out when you take off the shocks, might as well change em out at the same time. They're dirt cheeeep.

Re: 2001 Trans am WS6 Shocks

The second one you sent me says it only works on 82-91? Mines a 92, but I dont even think there is much of a difference between 91 and 92. Also do I just buy all the same shocks or what? Do the front need different ones then the back or are they all the same. And what springs are good to get?

Re: 2001 Trans am WS6 Shocks

Those springs, either of them, will work on the rear of ALL 3rd and 4th gen F bodies, from 82-02; including 92.

There are no "shocks" on the front of these cars. 3rd gens have struts up there. Struts perform the damping function of shocks, as well as being the pivot for the spindles for steering. The 4th gen front end does not have a strut; instead, it has 2 control arms and a shock, instead of one control arm (the lower one) and a strut like ours. Totally different design.

Since you were asking about "shocks", everything I've been talking about is the rear of the car, which is the only place where these cars have "shocks".

Yes the front springs are different from the rears. They would require a selection from a whole other set of part #s.

Good springs to get, for the rear, might include the 2 part #s I linked for you.

Re: 2001 Trans am WS6 Shocks

Spend the extra (over $500) and get KONIs. You'll thank yourself!! Do fronts why you're at it. Makes an odd feeling car with just new rears... I did it and it wasn't cool. haha

Re: 2001 Trans am WS6 Shocks

Are you wanting to lower the car? Or just install new springs?

Re: 2001 Trans am WS6 Shocks

If the price is the same I wouldent mind lowering it a little bit. Just so long as that doesent cause any problems with maybe the tires not fitting right or something else. But here in Virginia we get snow and ice, so I dont want it so low that i will mess the car up or constantly get stuck.

Re: 2001 Trans am WS6 Shocks

My car is lowered on Eibach Pro-Kit. It's just a little bit lower than it was with the stock springs. That's because the stock springs on our cars are so worn out by now. I've never had any problems with the wheels fitting or getting stuck. Just have to be a little more carefull when driving so you don't drag the nose. While these aren't a true performance set of springs, I'd say you'll like them more than the springs on the car now. Paired with the KONIs, it will be a great up-grade. I'd look on eBay for a set of new springs and hotpart.com for the KONIs.
Where in Vriginia are you? How close to Bristol? I'm just south of Bristol in Elizabethton, TN.

Looks like we're about this Total Est. Time: 6 hours, 26 minutes Total Est. Distance: 375.24 miles far away. haha

Yeah...that'd be a long drive for a test ride/ suspension work. I think you'll like the KONIs though.

Re: 2001 Trans am WS6 Shocks

Would changing just the rear shocks and springs without doing the fronts screw up how your suspension worked? Just changing the shocks should be ok, but I would think you'd want to do the front and rear springs as a matched set.

Re: 2001 Trans am WS6 Shocks

$1200 is a good start. I have about 3 times that much in my suspension, brakes, wheels/tires, and the rear end... I'm pretty sure I'm stupid..

I did my rear KONIs first and then the front. I had the Eibachs on the car at that time. If you replace the rear without the front, the car will be very unbalanced front to rear.

I think I have at least $2000 into mine and I still have some to go like rear LCA's and panhard bar. Are they ever really done ? I also have a 9 bolt with the cast iron calipers that I'm going to change over to the PBR's, so there's another $300 - $500 there.

I'm also running the Koni yellows with the sportline kit. I'm going to replace the sportlines with something a little stiffer in the near future though.

Re: 2001 Trans am WS6 Shocks

I'd look into doing the LS1 rear brakes. They are supposed to be better and have a better hand brake design.
But, no, I don't think were ever done. I still want to do new a-arm bushings, replace the steering box and what I haven't replaced in the steering, and get a set of Ground Control Weight Jacks to replace my Pro-Kit.

Re: 2001 Trans am WS6 Shocks

I think down the road I'd like to upgrade to a quick ratio box and strut tower bar, but my front suspension is pretty much done now except for changing springs.

If you are going to replace a-arm bushings I highly recommend the global west ones.
