TBI 350 from Caprice Police Car?
My friend has this 350 TBI from a 91 or 92 Chevy Caprice Police Car. He claims its a 300hp motor. Is this true? If not, what would the hp rating be? Are there any differences between the standard Caprice 350 and the Police Package 350. And any differences from the same year 350 TPI. Just curious to see if this is worth buying and putting in one of my Formulas. THANKS.

Before there was a 330Hp 330H.O. 350 with vortec heads there was the 300H.O. 350 with 300HP. it had the regular non-swirl heads. Maybe the engine was replaced with this crate engine. In a 4x4 mag of mine they put one with TBI into a '93 wrangler.

The truck L05 was rated at 210hp, it had 8.7:1 compression. The 92-93 caprice motor had 9.6:1 compression.

220 sounds abour right. Considering GM is always about 5-10hp underrated (even the L03 was stock dynoed at 174hp and 265 lb-ft).

I think you friend might be uninformed......Now if it is a highway interceptor than maybe it has some dip but from my knowledge and actually seeing them because my dad paints cars......They take out most of the goodies......They are faster than normal but 300 is alot of power back then

Yes, my friend is one of those stubborn boneheads that you can't tell him anything different. Anyway I had suspected that the Police motor was not to much different than the standard Caprice motor. I told him that the TPI Camaros were 230 or 240hp and no factory Caprice would have 60hp more in those years. Thanks to everyone who responded.

ya the only car that I can think of rated more than the Corvette in the same year from GM was the LS7 Chevelle. The Buick GNX had more power too but they still rated it below the vette.

1989 LO5 5.7 190 hp
1990 LO5 5.7 190 hp
1991 LO5 5.7 195 hp
1992 LO5 5.7 205 hp
1993 LO5 5.7 205 hp
The above refers ONLY to the 9C1 (police package) LO5. They were all tbi engines. There was also a civilian LO5 available in the Caddy Fleetwood, Buick Roadmaster, and Olds Custom Cruiser, and in model years from 1991-1993, but not consistently for each car type. The Chevy Caprice also got an optional LO5 for 1993 but only in the LTZ Caprice sedan.
The LO3 tbi engines, both civilian and 9C1 models, were rated at 170 fwhp.
For the LO5, the changes in hp (and slight changes in torque, but all were around 290-300 ftlbs @ 2400 rpm) had to do with better flowing cats, lower restriction in the Y-pipe, and a cold air feed to the air cleaner box.... (EDIT: and the L98 "773" cam). There had to be, btw, accompanying changes to the EPROM tables to provide the fuel to match, and hence boost the power slightly.
The LO5 made way for the iron head LT1 5.7 Gen II motor for 1994-1996, and those were ALL rated at 260 fwhp @ 5000 rpm, and 330 ftlbs from roughly 2200-3400 rpm. The LO5 never got rated above 205 hp in the 9C1 Caprice, but I think the trucks used them up to 1995 and they may have been rated at 210 hp. The LO5 was dropped from the trucks for the 1996 model year, which is when the Vortec-head L31 5.7 came out. I think the cam used in that engine was the same cam as in the 94-96 Caprice/Impala LT1.
Most of this info is in Ed Sanow's book "Chevrolet Police Cars 1955-1996". HTH, FYI.
