Smog pump delete info needed

I have a 1989 L03 TBI car with the power steering, and altenator on the drivers side the AC, and smog pump on the passenger side...I want to dump the smog pump, and not use a delete pulley (If that is possible) I have seen a couple of pics of belt routing, but have not seen one like my setup...Will someone PLEASE post a pic, or drawing of the correct way to route the belt to eliminate the smog pump....I looked at it for an hour today, and could not for the life of me figure it out.....If there is a sticky, or tech article on this I have not seen the one for my setup.....I did see the TPI one, but mine is not like that....Thanks for any help on this issue........Tom

it is pretty easy, I dont' have a good pic.

From the AC, the belt goes down and below the crank pully (ribs line up), it goes almost all the way around the crank pully, then over the top of the water pump (flat side meets water pump, over the water pump, and down and around the PS pump, then up to the alternator, and over.

I don't know if that describes it all, it was the best I could do without a pic. Also, your stock belt won't work, you will need to get a bet that is a hair longer. IIRC i used like a 96.5" or 94.5" belt. It has been a long time since I had serp belts though.

This should help. Do a search in the FAQ board for "this is what your AIR system looks like". I have a pretty detailed thread in there that I posted years back.

Lets try this again.

It looks like I can't attach duplicate images even if I rename them. Refer to this thread for the image.

It runs fine, I ran like that for a couple of years. I have now converted to v-belts with only a PS pump and alternator.

Check the Miscellaneous Mods section in the Tech Articles Tab.
It even identifies the different belt needed.

I heard how hard it was to wrap the headers. But come-on..
Cut off the air tubes & get a welder to close them up.
(Blasting & re-coating would be really spiffy!!!)
That's the least you can do for saving you the big
aw-s*** on that manifold swap

how is it that you need a longer belt with one less pulley?

Re: Smog pump delete info needed

If you could you might want to just put a delete pulley on they arent that much and bolt on really easy, you dont want to throw a belt, thats a long way for the belt to travel from the crank to the AC unit. Just a thought, but if your going down the road and you loose power steering and amps, then you probably threw a belt.

AC is different, there isnt as much distance from the smog pump to the water pump, as there is from the crank to the AC if you just take the smog out. Im not saying it will happen, but its a possibility.

Removing the smog pump is a good idea.
I will do it too.
Just one question...
On these diagrams, if I remove the smog pump, can I use the stock belt with the new belt route or should I change it?

You need a different size belt. You cannot re-use the stock belt.

Shifty, do you have a part number for the belt that is required for this delete? Any help appreciated.

Read the tech section guys, I cant remember right off hand but it tells you what belt you need and everything. Getting rid of the smog pump also frees up a few horsepower. Didnt even throw a CEL on my caprice when I did it.

Well you need to plug the manifolds, also need to make sure the cat is plugged too or you'll have somewhat of an exhaust leak. I badly want to remove mine, but I don't want any drivability concerns, or the value of my car to go down.

Been gone off mine for years, no problem..Just put plugs in the manifolds, and either get rid of the cat, or plug the tube..A shop did mine for me the first time with a "test tube" now with headers it is even better, my 89, and 92z are both like that..

Leave the EGR for better fuel economy...
The egr, recirculates exhaust gas at cruising (light throttle) to improve mileage. The EGR does not affect performance at WOT.

I'm going to get rid of my smog pump and everything that goes with it. My factory therm housing has two ports on it one for coolant sensor and the other for thermal vacuum switch (which has to do with the smog system) I'm guessing I will need to get a new therm housing with one port for the coolant temp sensor or plug the second port on my factory therm housing where the thermal vacuum switch is?

Re: Smog pump delete info needed

if you have a port in the front of the intake use that one for the coolant sensor. you know a thermostat housing for even a 1969 Camaro will work that has no holes in it. I have a 92 Camaro and that is what I am using.

I have a 83 ta and my stock thermostat housing has no holes for the coolant temp sensor. The CTS mounts on the intake right above the thermostat housing.

I removed the smog pump, egr & solenoid( my egr solenoid was shot and discontinued), A.I.R. lines, no check engine light after five years.

Thanks for the info. It's a 305 v8. Anything else I should consider while I have the motor out and painting the bay? I live in ga so I'm going to have to keep my heat and AC. Have thought about re routing my air lines so the don't go over the radiator. I would like to get rid of the clutch fan and go electric. Any of y'all done that or have any tips?!

I still have my heat and A/C on my 305 CFI. Pm me some engine bay pictures. Removing my cats and the egr diverter valve unit (its been bypassed and disconnected. No cells.). TBIparts on eBay sells a nice egr block off plate.

Yes egr valve for sure. Also I'm going to remove the charcoal canister and windshield wipers. Just have to did something to cover the hole where the wiper motor was. I'll pm you some pics when I get off work today if I have time. If not tomorrow.

Removing the wiper motor cleaned up the engine bay a good bit especially the washer fluid res and hoses. Plus I'm going to use the car for weekend/ special occasion don't plan on driving it in the rain.

I read to remove the charcoal canister:
Remove all vacuum tubing
Cap the throttle body nipple
Put a PCV breather on the canister pressure check valve to cap the fuel line from the tank (which can be put closer to fuel tank and not in engine bay)
And close the addition vacuum nipple on top of check valve with some JB weld or equivelant.

I would advise against removing the wipers because the weatherman still can't predict the weather. One day they say it was going to be 70 degrees and sunny all day. As I was driving from a car show a flash down pour comes down.

Re: Smog pump delete info needed

Hey guys, I have an 89 camaro rs 305 TBI, and I took the stock manifolds off and installed shortie headers and I removed the air lines and the hoses and housing they connect to, and I ordered a smog delete pulley and will be removing the smog pump and installing the delete pulley. With a delete pulley will I need a new serp, also what have people done with the air select and air divert sensors that plugged into the plastic AIR/smog housing? They look like they are in a loop so if I connect them to each other and put electrical tape over the connections? Or just leave them not connected to anything? Any help on the smog delete and those wires appreciated, thanks guys

Re: Smog pump delete info needed

I guess you should have bought the headers WITH the AIR plumbing. That would have ended all your AIR problems.

Bad newbie. Don't bring new life to old threads.

Remove all the sensors/valves associated with the AIR system, wrap the connectors up with some electrical tape & zip tie them away from any hot or moving parts. Done.

Does anybody know What can i plug the manifold and everything else with so I don't have an exhaust leak when I remove the smog pump and put a shorter belt on?

Consider NOT removing the pump, and NOT putting on a shorter belt. FIX the system if the pump or other parts have become defective. Problem solved.
