Which distributor gear w/GM HOT cam?
I need to know if I need to change my distributor gear when using the HOT cam. The gear I have now is just a production GM HEI gear from 1978. I know that I don't need a bronze gear because GM recommends a melonized gear. What is this melonized gear and do I have one? Please Help!

Check out the GM Performance Parts catalog. The distributor with the melonized cam drive (whatever the heck that is) is p/n 1104067.
I'm editing to let you know that you can also get just the melonized steel distributor gear as p/n 10456413.

FYI Melonizing is a patented process similar to nitriding in that it imparts a very hard wear resistant surface to steel, and has a low coefficient of friction.
Melonizing is different from nitriding in that the surface is porous and retains oil for lubrication for longer life.

Cool! I guess I am going to have to dish out the cash for a little weenie gear. Too bad I was hoping to be able to use my stock gear. I still have my distributor from the TPI days and it is the small remote coil HEI. If some how I could make that gear fit my old school distributor it would work, right? Aren't the shafts different by like .1 inches in diameter?
