My friends girlfriend just got an 89 RS with a 2.8 MPFI V6. It has a new engine and it runs good except the timing is horribly off. It idles okay but it stumbles, and it jerks when its driving, like its missing. the SES light doesnt come on, either. I checked the timing and it was almost 20* advanced at idle. I was thinking that there is a plug to the distributor that must be unplugged to set base timing. I retarded the timing back to 8*, 6*, and TDC just to see and it got even worse. I am starting to wonder if maybe the distributor is a tooth too far retarded. Help, I am not good with EFI!!!

yeah, you need to unplug the EST connector. Base timing @ idle is 10*. set it to 12* It'll run a little better.
